If I gave a producer $100,000.00 and asked him to create a branded content video series of no less than 5 episodes that embeds my new product – say, a copier that does your taxes – into your show, that I’d get something that resembles my ask. That very commercial ask specifically allows him to aim for something that has value to me, the funder. I gave him structure, a target. He and I will both be better off.

He believed you needed freedom from worry to be able to philosophize without the burden of attachment to the things of this world. His quest was an impossibility because humans are not capable of that level of transcendence.

Unfortunately for us all, I think his belief somehow has filtered into the modern definition of an artist. That superiorly talented and aloof person who meanders and wanders through life and creates otherworldly newness is the artist.

I say it all the time, "Complexity is the Enemy of Action". If you keep telling yourself to wait for a better camera, better mic, more time, etc. You're just selling yourself a bill of goods.

Look, the speed of the internet is such that YOU CANNOT WAIT! You have to create, simple but valuable content. What does that mean? Speak from your expertise, share to an audience that could use a slice of your knowledge, and go! You don't need to wow people with epic camera moves and sweet sweet Michael Bay explosions. That's a different type of video.

Checklist time: Are you a professional in your field? (yes? then film videos)Do you have at least a few thousand hours doing what you do? (yes? Then film a video)Do you have a unique perspective on a topic AND some level of authority to talk about it? (yes? FILM A VIDEO!!!)

Look.... if you are a stay at home dad with an economics degree and you want to blog about German engineered toothbrushes I'll bet you are out of your lane. But if you want to talk economics, business, family, being a dude in a "traditionally female role" (to some), etc... you have a real voice... SO FILM A VIDEO!

There must be due diligence to get funding and legal rights nailed down early. Also, if you have a shot at famous actors (“Named Actors”) then you want to nail them down as part of the Development efforts. If they “sign on” or offer an “LOI” (letter of intent) early, then you may actually get your funding.
