Today marks 40 years since scientists discovered that HIV causes AIDs – and now, the UK could be just a few more years away from stopping transmission altogether. https://trib.al/hmNCgQv

That is the hope of leading gay rights activist Jonathan Blake and the Terrence Higgins Trust.

Such a monumental achievement, almost within our grasp, highlights the stark difference in life for those with HIV – human immunodeficiency virus – in 2024 compared to 1984.

Jonathan, 74, has experienced both. He was one of the first people diagnosed with what would become known as HIV in October 1982, and for decades has been a leading campaigner in raising awareness of the disease.

Forty years on, he has never forgotten the fear that stalked the gay community at the time.

‘It was terrifying. It was incredibly isolating – I felt like a modern-day l***r.'

Stefanie Curran bought three £55 return flights to Paris and spent the 11-hour break sightseeing, shopping and eating pastries with her sons!

The social enterprise director, from Torquay, Devon, said: “I wanted to do something special for my 40th birthday.

“Even our local waterpark costs £95 per person, and Legoland is £500 for an overnight stay.

“Flying to Paris was definitely cheaper.”

In worrying new statistics from NHS England, toddlers are becoming so ill from va**ng that they are ending up in hospital.

In 2023,there were 50 admissions for va**ng-related disorders involving children – including 11 aged four or under. https://trib.al/5GuIY3w

Experts warned this is a ‘totally predictable consequence of the Tory government’s decision to allow a va**ng free for all’.

In 2020, no pre-schoolers were given hospital treatment for using the e-cigarettes – and only six children needed hospital help.

But total admissions of all people – kids and adults – for such disorders has soared by a staggering 276% in the four years since 2020.

🚆 Train drivers at 16 rail companies will stage a series of fresh strikes from May 7-9 in their long-running pay dispute, the Aslef union has announced.

🚃 Most operators will not run any trains on those days, bringing the majority of the services in England to a halt and having a major impact on journeys in Wales and Scotland.

🗣️ The union said it had not met employers or the government for more than a year, accusing ministers of “giving up” trying to resolve the near two-year dispute.

🗓️ Drivers will strike on May 7 at c2c, Greater Anglia, GTR Great Northern Thameslink, Southeastern, Southern, Gatwick Express and South Western Railway.

On May 8 there will be strikes at Avanti West Coast, Chiltern Railways, CrossCountry, East Midlands Railway, Great Western Railway and West Midlands Trains.

Aslef members at LNER, Northern Trains and TransPennine Express will strike on May 9.
