The island shore is always on the mind. The ebb and flow of it; beach weekends and hurricane season alike.
Caribbean living - diasporic, as Au Courant Studio has been in London, or landed on island as I was born and raised in Trinidad - is a conundrum. We leave the region because we tell ourselves the sea binds us in, it makes the living seem limiting.
Off island, trapped in cold, alienating spaces we can't quite integrate into nor easily leave, we look back to the Caribbean sea and realise how limitless, and bountiful, and beautiful in its vagaries it actually was.
The reality presses down upon us and we spend our days grappling with these extremes, but perhaps there is another way to consider it all.
A way that invites us to relax in ourselves and embrace the shore for what it is.
