When the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau boys basketball team is able to execute their defensive gameplan, head coach Ian Anderson always feels good about their chances of winning on a given night. Never was that more evident than the Red Hawks’ latest meeting with rival Arcadia, where a suffocating defensive performance powered them to a road win.

The Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau/Melrose-Mindoro Titans did not put together the type of performance they wanted in their final conference dual of the season. Rather than let it carry over any further, the team used it as motivation to help fuel the program’s latest conference title.

The Titans reigned supreme at this year’s Coulee conference tournament held last Friday in Westby, as they battled past West Salem/Bangor for the tournament crown.

The Arcadia boys basketball team was not happy with how things went against Westby at the end of January. Against a team they had beaten on the road earlier in the season, the Raiders were outscored by eight in the second half in a 56-50 home loss to the Norsemen in their Jan. 31 rematch.

Arcadia responded with a renewed focus at its next practice and followed that up with a lopsided road win against Bangor early last week.

“We just kept that fire — that feeling you feel when you’re in the locker room and you can hear them celebrating on the other side,” said Arcadia senior guard Kaiden Rotering. “It’s that fire that brings you to the next game, that gives you motivation to push through.”

For just over a full year, the Gale-Ettrick-Trempealeau girls basketball program has been searching for a win. When the time finally arrived and the Red Hawks snapped their lengthy losing skid, they enjoyed the taste of winning so much that they figured they might as well do it again their next time out.

G-E-T ended its 371-day wait to get back in the win column and snapped its 25-game losing streak with a 56-48 win over Tomah early last week. The program’s last win had come in a 45-42 triumph at Black River Falls on Jan. 30, 2024.

UPDATE: The city of Arcadia has canceled its closed-session meeting that was scheduled for tonight.

______________________________________________________

The public deserves to know why Arcadia is without a police chief and what the city officials intend to do about it. Unfortunately, members of the city government disagree.

But, there’s one small problem with the city’s action. It isn’t just that the public deserves more information, it has a legal right to information. The city council is scheduled to meet on the topic for a second time tonight. Like the first time, the meeting is scheduled to be closed to the public.

That isn’t right.
