On Tuesday, December 31st at 11:25p, the Hicksville Fire Department was dispatched to an investigation of an odor of smoke in the house on Jersey St. With multiple chiefs on the way, Hicksville dispatch received additional information of smoke from the attic and upon the arrival of 3rd Assistant Chief Keyer [9304], heavy smoke was found in the attic of the house and a Signal 10 was transmitted. Emergency Company # 5 Engine 935 was first due and stretched the initial line into the house to quickly extinguish the main body of fire. With the assistance of crews from Syosset, Bethpage, Jericho, East Meadow, Carle Place and Westbury, the fire was placed under control in 20 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department Difronzo [9301]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Tuesday, December 31st at approximately 9:40p, the New Hyde Park Fire Department was dispatched to a reported Basement Fire on Paul Ave. 2nd Assistant Chief Waldron [1702] quickly arrived on scene with smoke showing from the house and transmitted a Signal 10 with active fire in the basement. Engine 177 was fist due and stretched the initial line into the basement to quickly extinguish the main body of fire. With the assistance of crews from Floral, Manhasset-Lakeville, and South Floral Park , the fire was placed under control in approximately 20 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department Barbagallo [1700]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

With 2024 coming to a close with 6 working fires islandwide in the last 3 hours of the year, the final working fire total is in. A huge thank you again to Zone2photo and our numerous sources for helping keep track of all of these fires between both Nassau and Suffolk. You can keep track of 2025’s working fires on both my website (link below) and his. As customary tradition on January 1st, below is an overview of the 2024 Working Fire statistics for both Nassau & Suffolk Counties. In 2024, the first working fire on the Island and in Suffolk County at approximately 3:29pm on New Years Day for the Smithtown Fire Department while the first working fire in Nassau County went to the East Meadow Fire Department on January 6th at 12:55am.

The last working fire on the Island and in Suffolk County was went to the Coram Fire Department at approximately 11:40pm on New Years Eve while the last working fire for Nassau County went to the Hicksville Fire Department at 11:24pm.

On Monday, December 30th just after 5p, the Uniondale Fire Department was dispatched to a reported House Fire on Argyle Ave. First arriving units transmitted a Signal 98 with heavy smoke from the house and ultimately, the alarm was upgraded to a Signal 10 with fire on the 1st and 2nd floor of the house. Engine 7522 was first due and stretched the initial line into the house to begin extinguishing the main body of fire. At least 2 lines were stretched and placed into operation to extinguish the main body of fire with the assistance of crews from North Bellmore, Hempstead, Freeport & Roosevelt. After extensive overhaul by crews on scene, the fire was placed under control in approximately 40 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department Martinez [7500]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Saturday, December 28th at 7:10p, the Freeport Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke in the area of the Guy Lombardo Marina. 1st Assistant Chief Sotira [2101] and Engine 216 were quickly on the road and advised by firecom they were receiving calls for a boat on fire in the Marina. Upon arrival, units found a fully involved boat docked in the water and a Signal 10 was transmitted. Crews stretched 2 lines down the dock to completely extinguish the boat fire in approximately 30 minutes. While crews were overhauling the boat, smoke was seen coming from a boat on the other side of the marina that was originally docked next to the first boat. Freeport Ladder 217 and Merrick Engine 644 responded to the second boat finding heavy fire in the rear of the boat that was quickly growing. With the boat docked nose in, firefighters boarded NCPD Marine 6 with a hose line to begin extinguishing the second boat which was now fully involved boat. One line was placed into operation to completely extinguish the second boat fire while crews continued to overhaul the first boat. With the assistance of crews from Baldwin, Roosevelt, Point Lookout Lido, Long Beach, Merrick, and the water rescue team from Wantagh Marine Unit, the entire scene was placed under control in approximately 75 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department Gonzalez [2100]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Thursday, December 26th at approximately 6:20p, the Plainview Volunteer Fire Department along with a dual response engine from Bethpage were dispatched to a report of smoke in the house on Round Swamp Rd. Plainview Chief of Department Mayrose [9501] quickly arrived on scene with active fire from the front of the house and a Signal 10 was transmitted followed by an upgrade to a 2nd Alarm. Bethpage Engine 9044 was first due and stretched the initial line to the 2nd floor to begin extinguishing the main body of fire. Crews stretched a total of 2 lines to extinguish the main body of fire which extended into the attic of the house. With the assistance of crews from Farmingdale, Melville, and Syosset, the fire was placed under control in approximately 40 minutes with extensive overhaul conducted. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Thursday, December 26th just after 1:30p, the Elmont Fire Department was dispatched to a report of smoke in the house on South Hummel St. Chief of Department Santina [7010] was quickly on scene finding fire on the 2nd floor and transmitted a Signal 10. Engine 702 was first due and stretched the initial line to begin extinguishing the fire. In total, 2 lines were stretched and placed into operation to extinguish the fire with the assistance of crews from Valley Stream and Malverne. The fire was placed under control in approximately 30 minutes with extensive overhaul conducted by crews on scene.

On Wednesday, December 25th at approximately 10:23p, the Jericho Fire Department was dispatched to a reported fire in the walls on Vista Dr in the Hamlet Condominium Estates. 1st Assistant Chief Ketsoglou [9402] arrived first on scene and found smoke showing from 2 story condo building and upon a brief search, fire was found in 2 units and a Signal 10 was transmitted. Engine 944 was first due and stretched the first line to begin extinguishing the fire while the remaining attached units were evacuated. Upon the arrival of Chief of Department Foresto [9401], the alarm was upgraded to a 2nd Alarm with fire on multiple floors of both units. After stretching multiple lines for an aggressive interior attack, with deteriorating conditions and structural failures within the building, the decision was made to transition to a defensive operation. Multiple hand lines and 2 tower ladders were utilized to continue to extinguish the fire with crews from over 20 Departments responding to the scene to assist. Crews operated for approximately 4.5 hours before the fire was placed under control at a 3rd Alarm under the direction of Chief of Department Foresto. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Tuesday, December 24th just before 1:40p, the Hempstead Volunteer Fire Dept was dispatched to a reported building fire on Jerusalem Ave. With units already on the road for a prior alarm, 2nd Assistant Chief Carney [82] was quickly on scene and transmitted a Working Fire with active fire in the paint booth of an auto body shop. First arriving units stretched the initial line to begin extinguishing the main body of fire in the paint booth. In total, 2 lines were stretched and placed into operation to extinguish the fire with overhaul conducted by crews on scene including mutual aid units from West Hempstead, Uniondale, Baldwin, Rockville Centre, South Hempstead and Lakeview. The fire was placed under control in approximately 30 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department Rugg [80]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Monday, December 23rd at approximately 10:10p, the Roosevelt Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a building fire on Nassau Rd. Safety Officer 7330 was first to arrive on scene confirming a fire in the rear of a 2 1/2 story vacant building and upon the arrival of 2nd Assistant Chief Vasquez [7302], a Signal 10 was transmitted. Engines 732 & 733 quickly arrived on scene and stretched the initial lines to begin extinguishing the fire which was located in the basement. While conducting searches, fire was found to have extended to the upper floors prompting at least 4 lines to be stretched and placed into operation. With the assistance of crews from Freeport, Uniondale, Merrick, North Merrick, Hempstead, West Hempstead, South Hempstead, and Rockville Centre, the fire was placed under control in approximately 90 minutes under the direction of 1st Assistant Chief Dawkins [7301]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Saturday, December 21st just before 11p, the Syosset Volunteer Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire on Hemlock Dr. 1st Assistant Chief Eysser [5801] and 2nd Assistant Chief Sauberman [5802] quickly arrived on scene finding active fire in the basement of the house and a Working Fire was transmitted. Engines 587 & 581 and Ladder 582 were first due and while stretching the initial line, an urgent was transmitted due to the house electric service dropping onto the hose line and partially burning through it. The crews stretched a separate line into the basement to begin extinguishing the fire. Searches revealed extension to the 1st & 2nd floors of the house prompting a total of 4 lines to be stretched to extinguish the fire. With the assistance of crews from Jericho, Plainview, Hicksville, Bethpage, Westbury, and East Norwich, the fire was placed under control in approximately 1 hour under the direction of 1st Assistant Chief Eysser. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Friday, December 20th at approximately 11:30p, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to a reported MVA with overturn and entrapment at the intersection of Stewart Ave and Washington Ave. Chief of Department Taunton [1400] quickly arrived on scene confirming a two car MVA with one vehicle on its roof and all occupants out. Rescue 146 was first due and placed the tool into operation to secure the overturned vehicle. A precautionary line was stretched off Engine 142 due to a large fuel leak from one of the vehicles involved. The occupants of the vehicles were evaluated by NYU EMS.

On Monday, December 16th at approximately 10:30a, the Uniondale Fire Department was dispatched to a reported House Fire on Lenox Ave. Unit 7550 quickly arrive on scene finding a smoke condition in the basement. As the smoke condition increased, a Signal 98 was transmitted and ultimately upgraded to a Signal 10 with fire found in the basement extending to the upper floors. Engine 753 & Ladder 7544 were first due and stretched the initial line into the house to begin extinguishing the fire and searching for additional extension. At least 3 lines were stretched and placed into operation to extinguish the fire on all floors with the assistance of crews from North Bellmore, Hempstead and Roosevelt. The fire was placed under control in approximately 45 minutes under the direction of 1st Assistant Chief Hicks [7501]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Sunday, December 15th at approximately 5:10p, the Lakeview Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire with possible people trapped on Coventry Rd North. First arriving units encountered heavy fire showing from the house with all occupants removed from the home and a Signal 10 was transmitted. With the house backing up to the firehouse, Engine 413 laid in from the front ramp and stretched the first line to begin extinguishing the fire. At least 3 lines were stretched and placed into operation to extinguish the fire in basement, 1st floor and attic with the assistance of crews from West Hempstead, Rockville Centre, Lynbrook, Malverne, Hempstead, Lawrence-Cedarhurst and Elmont. The fire was placed under control in approximately 45 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department F. Senti III [4100]. The occupants of the home were treated for smoke inhalation. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Thursday, December 5th at approximately 12:50a, the Freeport Fire Department was dispatched to a reported building fire on Broadway. Engine 216 was on the scene in under 3 minutes and upon arrival, had smoke showing from the 2nd floor of a 2-story mixed occupancy and a Signal 10 was transmitted. The crew of Engine 216 stretched the initial line to begin extinguishing the fire on the 2nd floor. The fire was upgraded to a 2nd alarm with fire through the roof bringing mutual aid assistance from Merrick, Roosevelt, Baldwin, Long Beach, Lawrence-Cedarhurst, and Hempstead to the scene to assist with extinguishment and overhaul. At least 3 lines were stretched to extinguish the fire which was brought under control in approximately 30 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department Gonzalez [2100]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Wednesday, December 4th at approximately 6:45p, the Port Washington Fire Department was dispatched to a reported house fire on Charles Ave. 2nd Assistant Chief Saccoccia [8502] and 1st Assistant Chief Reese [8501] were both immediately on the road and were advised by Firecom that multiple calls were being received. Both Chiefs quickly arrived on scene and a Signal 10 was transmitted and immediately upgraded to a 2nd alarm for a fully involved 2 1/2 story house in the dead end. With all occupants out of the house, the decision was made to immediately begin defensive operations. Protection Engine 8511 arriving first due and stretched the initial line to protect the exposures while utilizing the deck gun to start extinguishing the main body of fire. At least 5 hand lines and 2 master streams were placed into operation throughout the duration of the fire with the assistance of crews from Manhasset-Lakeville, Roslyn Rescue, Great Neck Vigilant, Plandome, Glenwood, and Williston Park. Crews operated on scene for nearly 4 hours to completely extinguish the fire on all floors. All operations were under the direction of 1st Assistant Chief Reese [8501]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Monday, December 2nd just before 5p, the Port Washington Fire Department was dispatched to a reported House Fire on Cornwall Ln in Manorhaven. 2nd Assistant Chief Saccoccia [8502] and Ambulance 854 were immediately on the road and received additional information from Firecom of a possible bedroom fire. A854 arrived on scene and advised Assistant Chief Saccoccia they had smoke showing with heavy fire from the 3 & 4 side of the house and a Signal 10 was transmitted. Engine 8511 was first due and stretched the initial line to begin extinguishing the fire. With fire spanning the first floor, 2nd floor and attic, at least 3 lines were placed into operation in addition to Tower Ladder 8517 to extinguish the main body of fire in approximately 30 minutes. With the assistance of crews from Manhasset-Lakeville, Great Neck Vigilant and Roslyn Highlands, the fire was placed under control in just over 1 hour with extensive overhaul conducted. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

On Thursday, November 28th at approximately 6:30p, the South Floral Park Fire Department along with a dual response engine & ladder from Floral Park were dispatched to a reported house fire on Marguerite Ave. Floral Park 3rd Assistant Chief Laurie [1203] was quickly on scene and transmitted a Signal 10 for an attached garage fire. South Floral Park Engine 181 was first due and stretched the initial attack line to begin extinguishing the fire. Crews quickly knocked down the main body of fire, placing 2 lines in operation. With the assistance of crews from New Hyde Park, Elmont and Stewart Manor, the fire was placed under control in approximately 45 minutes under the direction of Chief of Department Bellamy [1800]. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
