RELEASED: 2024 Annual U.S. Climate Report

⮚ The average temperature of the contiguous U.S. in 2024 was 55.5°F, 3.5°F above average, the warmest year in the 130-year record.

⮚ The Atlantic basin saw an above-average season, with 18 named tropical cyclones and five hurricanes making landfall.

⮚ Hurricane Helene became the seventh-most-costly Atlantic hurricane on record, causing an estimated $78.7 billion in damages.

⮚ Annual precipitation for the contiguous U.S. was 31.58 inches, 1.66 inches above average, ranking in the wettest third of the historical record.

⮚ A preliminary count of 1,735 tornadoes was reported in 2024, the second-highest annual total on record.

⮚ Drought coverage across the contiguous U.S. ranged from a minimum extent of 12% on June 11—the lowest extent recorded since early 2020—to a maximum coverage of 54% on October 29.

We’re back with an update from the November Global Climate Report:

🥵 This was the second-warmest November for the globe—global surface temperature was 2.41°F (1.34°C) above the 20th-century average.

▶️ Arctic sea ice extent was the third lowest on record.
🔵 Antarctic sea ice extent was the lowest on record.

🧊 Global sea ice extent was the second smallest in the 46-year record at 9.00 million square miles—1.05 million square miles below average.

🌀 Twelve named storms occurred across the globe in November, which ties for the most on record. The Atlantic basin saw three tropical cyclones during November, including Hurricane Rafael, which peaked as a Category 3.

🌡️ According to the Global Annual Temperature Outlook, there is a greater than 99% chance that 2024 will rank as the warmest year on record.

❄️ The Northern Hemisphere snow cover extent in November was slightly below average.

The holiday season is ramping up! As you traveled to see family/friends or spent time at home, you may have noticed some seasonal climate idiosyncrasies. Check out the November 2024 U.S. Climate Report to learn more:

🌡️ The average temperature of the contiguous U.S. in November was 45.3°F, 3.6°F above average, ranking sixth warmest in the 130-year record.

💧 November precipitation was 2.98 inches, 0.75 inch above average, ranking 17th wettest in the historical record.

🌡️ 🍁 The average temperature of the contiguous U.S. from September–November (autumn) was 57.6°F, 4.1°F above average, ranking warmest on record.

💧 🍁 September–November (autumn) precipitation was 6.23 inches, 0.65 inch below average, ranking in the driest third of the historical record.

🏜️ According to the December 3 U.S. Drought Monitor report, about 43.6% of the contiguous U.S. was in drought, down nearly 10.5% from the end of October.

🔥 Above-average significant wildland fire potential exists across parts of southern California, central Texas and from the central Gulf Coast to the Mid-Atlantic during December.

🌀 The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season was above-average with 18 named tropical systems and 11 hurricanes—five of which were major hurricanes. It will be one of the costliest seasons on record once a full evaluation of estimated cost has concluded.

BREAKING: A "major" earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 just struck off the coast of northern California, with a "moderate" 5.8 earthquake inland north of San Francisco. A Tsunami Warning is in effect for some of the California and Oregon coastlines, including San Francisco Bay (orange highlight on the map).

2PM CT UPDATE: The Tsunami warning has been CANCELED for all of the U.S. coastline. Great news there as our neighbors on the west coast are given the all clear.

🌡️ The average temperature of the contiguous U.S. in October was 59.0°F, 4.9°F above average, ranking second warmest in the 130-year record.

💧 October precipitation was 0.95 inch, 1.21 inches below average, tying for second driest with October 1963.

🏜️ According to the October 29 U.S. Drought Monitor report, about 54.1% of the contiguous U.S. was in drought, up about 22.6% from the beginning of October—the largest four-week drought expansion on record.

🔥 Above-normal significant wildland fire potential exists from the central Gulf Coast states to southern New England during November.

🌀 Hurricane Milton made landfall near Tampa, Florida, as a Category 3 storm on October 9—more than 100 tornadoes spawned across Florida and millions were without power as a result of the storm.

🌀 Global tropical cyclone activity was near average with 11 named storms, including five tropical cyclones in the Atlantic Basin. Milton peaked as a Category 5 storm and made landfall just south of Tampa Bay.
