We’re delighted to announce the evolution of our strategic partnership with Viasat Inc., which forms the foundation for collaborating on advanced maritime satellite connectivity solutions to also include the forthcoming ViaSat-3 satellite constellation.

Delivering at least 3 Tbps of new capacity globally, Viasat’s next generation satellite network ViaSat-3 will unlock huge advantages for the global maritime sector. As a direct result of our partnership, we’ll be ready with a state-of-the-art portfolio of groundbreaking antenna systems as well as industry first upgrade kits that will allow conversion of existing Ku and other Ka band antennas to Viasat services.

While the latest Seafarers Happiness Index report, by The Mission to Seafarers, has shown an increase in those able to access reliable connectivity out at sea, ‘more seafarers [are] being able to get online and connect with friends, family and loved ones back home… there is a real sense of increased happiness when owners invest in better or cheaper connectivity.’

It also found that ‘there are, however, still all too many seafarers who do not benefit from good, affordable and high-quality connectivity’.

Seafarers face some of the toughest working conditions on the planet and rely on high-quality connectivity to speak to loved ones and family. We recognise Earth Hour – an important time to raise awareness of the environmental issues facing our planet.

The loss of biodiversity is a major environmental issue, with a Nations report recently finding that the average number of native species in major land-based habitats to have fallen by at least 20%. Reliable satellite connectivity can help scientists carry out essential research and data collection in the remotest parts of the planet to better understand the factors impacting biodiversity.

Satellite technology is also supporting digitalisation in the shipping industry, which is playing a major role in improving the efficiency of vessels and reducing carbon emissions.

This Women’s History month, we are recognising the pioneering work of women in the satellite communications and technology sectors.

Our Operations Project Manager, Mette Christiansen, has always had a keen interest in technology and wanted her contribution in the industry to be one which was influential.

When asked what she likes about the technology field, Mette said: “It’s a dynamic environment with passionate people who create great products that make a real difference to people’s lives.”

After over a decade in the field, Mette has some great advice for aspiring women: “Be bold and dare to go against the mainstream; no one day is ever the same so enjoy the fast-moving nature of the industry. Nurture your natural interest in technology and embrace the development of new products.”
