Tonight’s show ended with a tribute to Eddie Van Halen. A true musical inspiration to me from the early teen years, as he was for many. He wasn’t just hard rock, as he took the guitar to heights no one had heard. Many followed in his wake, but he boat raced them all. Most don’t reasonably associate Van Halen and garage rock, but a lineage is there. Van Halen covered one of the biggest inspirations of 60s garage rock, the Kinks, twice. I had read an article years ago where Eddie said the Dave Clark Five were one of his favorite bands early on as well. The 3rd Street Garage played some hard rock tonight, and it struck me that it couldn’t be a more fitting confluence of sounds. As it was a heart-felt cover of “You Really Got Me” shrouded in a cloak of red, black and white.
