Every leap of faith begins with the decision to trust God and take action.

What small step can you take today that says I trust God no matter the outcome???

Thursday Devotional-A Leap of Faith?

And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him.“
‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭11‬:‭6‬ ‭NLT‬‬

Without a doubt, one of my favorite movies is Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse. The story of Miles Morales becoming Spider-Man is unlike any other that I grew up with. One of the most iconic scenes was his leap of faith. After losing his uncle, after being left behind, even after questioning whether he thought he was worthy enough to be called Spider-Man, he takes a leap of faith. The most interesting thing from this scene is this picture: Even as he takes this leap of faith, he is still holding on to the glass in doubt. Nevertheless, he takes it. His doubt does not stop him from taking the leap. His faith overcame his doubt as he leaped into his role as the new protector of his city. You may ask is Christianity a leap of faith? Is believing that Christ came, lived among us, died and rose from the dead a leap of faith into the dark? Is trusting in a God you can’t see a leap of faith into the unknown? Hearing this seems strenuous, and yet the writer of Hebrews writes that without faith, it is impossible to please Him. Anyone who comes to faith has taken that proverbial leap of faith, however they are not alone. Hebrews 11 is full of men and women who have also done so. Their doubt did not prevent them. Their faith in God propelled them. Today, it may seem as such, but he or she that comes to God must believe that He exists and He rewards, and praise God that we can know He does. In the words of Peter Parker: “That’s all it is, Miles. A leap of faith.”

Thursday Devotional-Eyes Up

So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever.”
— ‭‭2 Corinthians‬ ‭4‬:‭18‬‬

Jayda Coleman, Alyssa Brito, Grace Lyons-Turk. Three games that would become synonymous. After winning a National championship in college softball, they were interviewed and asked in the midst of an undefeated season, how do you not let the pressure get to you to achieve perfection? All three players unashamedly declared the slogan “Eyes up” as they chose to fix their eyes on Jesus. In the midst of achieving a perfect season, they fixed their eyes on the Perfect Son of God, and even if their season ended in defeat, they would be ok, because they all had a fixed gaze. What a lesson for all of us to take hold of. Every single day, what will we fix our eyes upon? The temporal things of this world that ultimately will fade away, or the eternal things that will last forever? Not In times of distress, but in seasons of delight, may we learn to fix our eyes on the eternal. May we fix our eyes on Jesus, and keep our “eyes up”.

Thursday Devotional-Only Masterpieces

”For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.“
‭‭Ephesians‬ ‭2‬:‭10‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Have you ever heard of kintsugi?? Until a couple of years ago, I hadn’t either. For those unfamiliar, Kintsugi is a form of Japanese art. However, it isn’t like any art that you or I would think of. Rather, it is the art of repairing broken pottery. You may ask, what is the use of broken pottery? This should be discarded or disposed or. It serves no purpose. Yet when rightly done, what was once broken has become a beautiful masterpiece. Yes, the golden lines represent the repair of what was once broken. Yet the repaired piece of pottery is even stronger than it was previously. What once was a mistake is now a masterpiece. You may be asking the question: Does God make mistakes? We are reminded in Scripture of the perfection of God. He is perfect in His way, He is perfect in His faithfulness, and most importantly, He is perfect in His character. A PERFECT GOD CANNOT AND WILL NOT MAKE MISTAKES. He created us like Him that we may be in relationship with Him, but like the pottery, we were broken and damaged because of sin. Yet God through Jesus Christ and His blood made a way to make us new, made us righteous, and to put us back together again. Therefore, making us stronger than we were once before. A perfect God does not make or create mistakes. He creates only masterpieces.

Thursday Devotional-The Power Of A Faithful Friend

“When Jesus returned to Capernaum several days later, the news spread quickly that he was back home. Soon the house where he was staying was so packed with visitors that there was no more room, even outside the door. While he was preaching God’s word to them, four men arrived carrying a paralyzed man on a mat. They couldn’t bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, so they dug a hole through the roof above his head. Then they lowered the man on his mat, right down in front of Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the paralyzed man, “My child, your sins are forgiven.””
— ‭‭Mark‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭5‬‬

Understanding the power of faith is one thing. Having four friends who each understand it: Just as phenomenal. Whenever I need prayer, whenever I need counsel, whenever I need encouragement or exhortation, I call a friend who can pray for me, who can counsel me, who can encourage and exhort me when needed. At the drop of a dime, if I need a faithful friend, I know I have some available. Bottom line: Each and every one of us have that friend who knows how to get us to Jesus when we can’t. In the Gospel of Mark, you have four of those men. You also have a paralyzed man. Whether these men were his friends or not, we do not know, but here is what we do know. These men saw a man who needed to get to Jesus, and these men knew how to do it. No obstacle and no crowd was going to stop them, and when Jesus saw their faith, this paralyzed man not only received spiritual healing, but also physical. Yes, Jesus is a faithful friend indeed, and even along your way, He will introduce you to some faithful friends who know how to get you to Him when you can’t seem to get to Him yourself.

Thursday Devotional-We Know How The Story Ends

“He who is the faithful witness to all these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon!” Amen! Come, Lord Jesus!”
— ‭‭Revelation‬ ‭22‬:‭20‬‬

February 7, 2010. I will never forget the date. As an avid sports fan, I remember this all important date, because this day was the day when my favorite football team, the New Orleans Saints, would win their first Superbowl in franchise history. I have watched this game over and over again. I still get emotional, and I still interact as if I was watching the game again for the first time, even though I know how the game ends. Matter of fact, you and I do that a lot. Whether it is a sports game, a familiar movie, a book that we’ve read, we know how the story ends. Despite the plot twists, despite the climaxes or surprises, we know the ending. For the Christian, for you who trust Christ, this statement is all the more important today: We know how the story ends. Jesus is coming back, and He is returning sooner than we think, for John writes the words of Jesus: I am coming soon. Or as the KJV puts it, “Behold I come quickly.” Despite the highs and lows you have had, despite the plot twists and surprises that have taken place, you know how this story ends. Therefore, knowing how this story ends, stand up confidently and courageously today as you keep your heart and mind focused, looking for the soon and coming return of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Thursday Devotional-Ripple Effect

“And the keeper of the prison awaking out of his sleep, and seeing the prison doors open, he drew out his sword, and would have killed himself, supposing that the prisoners had been fled. But Paul cried with a loud voice, saying, Do thyself no harm: for we are all here.”
— ‭‭Acts‬ ‭16‬:‭27‬-‭28‬‬

You’re familiar with a ripple effect, right? Commonly we think of water, as when an object hits the surface of a water, regardless of the size or density, can cause a continuous wave. Ripple effects are everywhere. Actions that causes or has effects that can be continuous in nature. Today I ask you what ripple effect are you causing? I share with you a ripple effect from the life of Paul. How Paul’s attitude, when faced with circumstances he particularly would not have chosen, caused a ripple effect in the midst of a dark prison. How in the midnight hour when he was imprisoned for doing what God chose him to do, he and his partner, Silas, were praying and praising God, and the prisoners HEARD them. (Acts 16:25). God sent an earthquake and the prison doors open, For every prisoner, not just Paul and Silas. The jailer, knowing the penalty of allowing the prisoners to escape during that time was death, chose to end it by his own hand, and before he dealt his own death blow, his hand was stopped by a cry: Don’t kill yourself. WE are all here. It’s profound that Paul and Silas chose not to escape, but even more profound, is that EVERY prisoner was still there. Do you think that the case of Paul and Silas had anything to do with why they didn’t? I choose to believe that it did. You see, one action can have a huge effect. One action can cause a ripple, and the fact that Paul and Silas chose to pray and praise God in their circumstances displayed to these prisoners, that there must be something unique about this Gospel that has begun sweeping the world. Today, I ask you and me, what ripple effect will we have today?

Thursday Devotional-Did I Miss Something???

“After this there was a feast of the Jews, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now there is in Jerusalem by the Sheep Gate a pool, which is called in Hebrew, Bethesda, having five porches. In these lay a great multitude of sick people, blind, lame, paralyzed, waiting for the moving of the water.”
— ‭‭John‬ ‭5‬:‭1‬-‭3‬‬

How often does this happen? Even with reading Scripture, there are always things that I am reminded of more often than not, and even many times, more often than not, that I missed something I needed to hear. Reading this again, I was mesmerized at what I missed. Notice: There is a gate. Notice: There is a pool. Notice: There is a great multitude waiting by this pool. Notice: There are several physical conditions by this pool: The blind, the lame, the paralyzed, the sick. But notice also the other condition. The unseen condition. The condition that I missed: Waiting. These people were waiting. Waiting for the moving of the water. Waiting for the angel. Waiting for the miraculous. Waiting for the momentous. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting, and all this time, even at this time in the waiting, they missed the miraculous before their very eyes: Jesus, the son of God, the Word made flesh. They missed it while waiting for the miraculous. Every word is given in Scripture for a reason. Why is this word “waiting” so important here? Because while they were waiting for the miraculous, they missed an even greater miracle in their midst. Does it ever occur to you that we sometimes miss the real miracle? Does it ever occur that sometimes as we wait on God to move, that He is waiting on us to move? Today, I encourage you. Be careful that you do not focus so much on the mundane and miraculous that you miss the Messiah. Because even in the mundane and miraculous, He is ever present.

“So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey, and headed back to the land of Egypt. In his hand he carried the staff of God.”
‭‭Exodus‬ ‭4‬:‭20‬ ‭NLT‬‬

God asked Moses “What is that in your hand?” in verse 4 of chapter 4. Moses truthfully answered. It was a rod. A staff. A shepherds crook. What happened to it when God laid his hands on it? It became the rod of God, the staff of God. The rod that Moses uses for forty years would be the rod that God would use to help Moses lead God’s people. But you may say what I have is ordinary. God cannot use my ordinary. He needs something extravagant, extraordinary, and excellent. Well what happens then? We become dependent upon us, and completely independent of Him and His power and His presence. What is today that you have in your hand that God is asking you to give to Him and put His hands on? Your job can become more than an ordinary job when it’s in God’s hands. Your home can become more than just an ordinary home when it is in God’s hands. Your guitar can become more than just an ordinary guitar when it is in God’s hands. Your ministry can become more than just a ordinary ministry when it is in God’s hands. Ultimately, you can become more than an ordinary minister, parent, musician and individual when you give God complete control. You go from being just a man to being God’s man. You go from being just a woman to being a woman of God. Today I encourage you: Let go and allow God to have control of everything, to have possession of everything, and to have His way ultimately in your life.

REMEMBER LOT’S WIFE

Remember what happened to Lot’s wife! If you cling to your life, you will lose it, and if you let your life go, you will save it.”
— ‭‭Luke‬ ‭17‬:‭32‬-‭33‬‬

Do you remember what happened to Lot’s wife?? Better question, do you KNOW what happened?? In the case that you do not, let me inform you. In Genesis 18, Abraham was told by God that the cities of S***m and Gomorrah were to be judged because of their wickedness. In Genesis 19, when the city of S***m and Gomorrah was judged by God, Lot and his family were told to run and to NOT look back. Howbeit, Lot’s wife looked back. In the escape, one decision would turn into a lifetime of regret. While God’s angels were leading her to freedom, she made the decision to look back. It wasn’t what she saw (the fire, the brimstone, the destruction) Rather it was what she wasn’t willing to let go of. The old life of S***m and Gomorrah, the old life that she was used to, the old life that she loved: She was not willing to lose that in order that her life may be spared. For years, I focused on the fact of her turning into a pillar of salt, but never focused on the why. Well, in this discourse that Jesus is sharing, He warns us of the second coming: how they would be the same as in the days of Noah and of Lot. And if they forget the discourse, remember the pivotal point that puts it all together: Lot’s wife. If you choose to cling to your life, you too will lose it. If you choose to let go of it, you will save it. Speaking in the spiritual: This life we live under Heaven is temporary. The days are fleeting, and soon enough, the time left that we have to make our days count for His honor and glory are numbered. Today, I ask what will you do: Will you choose to cling to this life, or to let go of it for a greater one?

Isn’t it interesting how our questions change as we get older??? How they get more complex and not simple??? Even today I thought about when I always looked up to the sky as a child, and felt the sun beaming on my face, and thought to myself, God must be happy. Then, when it rained, and showers and storms came, I always asked, Mom why is God crying? What is it that made Him sad? Maybe you asked these questions too, but even now these questions have changed form. From “Why is the sky blue?” to “Why does God allow evil?” or “How does God make the grass grow?” to “How long will this struggle last?” Though our questions have changed, the invitation has not. Whether simple or complex, I’m thankful that He invites us to come, and to keep coming, to Him; to ask, and to keep asking; To seek, and to keep seeking; To knock, and to keep knocking. He invites us to come through Jesus in childlike faith, because there is no question that is too complex or even too simplistic that He cannot answer. And even if He doesn’t answer then, the invitation is still the same. Come, and keep coming; ask, and keep asking; seek, and keep seeking; knock, and keep knocking.

Chapter 6: Darkness (Heaven: How I Got Here by Colin Smith)

Today is Good Friday! But if the truth be told, it was not a Good Friday. It was a Dark Friday.

On this day, the only good man who ever lived died. One who never committed a sin or did any wrong…died!!!! Darkness fell….judgment came….nothing about this Friday was good.

Yet….what God was doing in that darkness, and why He was doing it, makes this Friday good, and for the thief on the cross who is in Heaven today, it was a great Friday.

For this Passion Week, I am reading a book entitled Heaven: How I Got Here written by a pastor named Colin Smith. It is a perspective from the penitent thief, from his early life and imprisonment to his death and first day in Heaven, including what happened during Passion week. It is one of my favorite books I try to read during Passion Week. Every day, I will be sharing quotes from the book that will all come together at the end of the week. May they be a challenge and an encouragement to you as we remember Passion Week and what happened.

“The trees of the Lord are well cared for— the cedars of Lebanon that he planted. There the birds make their nests, and the storks make their homes in the cypresses.”
— ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭104‬:‭16‬-‭17‬‬

The cedars of Lebanon that he (God) planted….planted with a purpose. If there is any word I can remind you of this morning, it would be the word “Purpose.” God has a purpose for you. He does not have you where you are by accident. Even the cedars of Lebanon; the mighty and massive trees, were planted and purposed by God as they are a shelter and a refuge for the birds that build their nest upon. They are both a benefit and a blessing for them. It can be easy to compare and say: I could be doing much more than what I am doing. It can be easy to look for greener pastures. It is human to wonder “Why am I here?” or “What am I supposed to be doing?” All honest prayers that you can petition. But know this today: Like the cedar, you have a purpose. If He has planted you where you are, it is for a reason, namely His reason. If He has planted where you are, it is for glory, namely His glory. If He has planted you where you are, it is for a purpose, namely His purpose. My encouragement to you: Flourish where you have been planted. For His purpose, for His glory, flourish to be a benefit and a blessing, in that the birds which build their nests in your branches will too be blessed.
