'I learned very quickly that gaining access to a rehab facility did not mean that I was magically guaranteed opportunities to photograph what I wanted to photograph when I wanted to photograph it.

Nor did it mean I was suddenly going to produce outstanding images of wildlife.

Capturing and producing strong end-to-end wildlife rehabilitation stories within a rehab facility was far more challenging than I initially thought it would be, for several reasons.

Getting authentic insights into the world of wildlife rehabilitation is first and foremost dependent on building good relationships with members of staff, and it takes time for people to trust you enough to let their guard down in front of the camera...'

If you’re currently lacking inspiration, our guide to creative macro photography is precisely what you need to reignite your passion and creativity behind the lens.

'Tips for Creative Macro Photography' by Ross Hoddinott

It’s easy to feel like you’ve exhausted all your ideas or hit a creative block. Perhaps your close-up shots are consistently sharp, well-lit, and technically proficient, but seem they lack that extra special touch.

After all, a technically good image doesn’t always guarantee aesthetic appeal or memorability.

While it’s important to master the art of capturing competent close-ups, if you want your macro shots to stand out from the crowd or succeed in competitions, you’ll need to unleash your inventiveness and embrace creativity....

Sleeping Polar Bear Wins WPOTY People’s Choice Award!

‘Ice Bed’, Nima Sarikhani’s dreamy image of a young polar bear drifting to sleep on a bed carved into an iceberg, has been voted as the winner of Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award.

The 25 images in the running for this year’s Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award received a record number of votes with over 75,000 wildlife photography and nature fans from around the world casting their votes to name British amateur photographer Nima Sarikhani this year’s winner.

Director of the Natural History Museum, Dr Douglas Gurr, says: ‘Nima’s breathtaking and poignant image allows us to see the beauty and fragility of our planet.

‘His thought-provoking image is a stark reminder of the integral bond between an animal and its habitat and serves as a visual representation of the detrimental impacts of climate warming and habitat loss.’

After three days searching for polar bears through thick fog off Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, the expedition vessel Nima was on decided to change course and headed towards where there was still some sea ice. Here they encountered two polar bears.

Just before midnight, the young male clambered onto a small iceberg and, using his strong paws, clawed away at it to carve out a bed for himself. Nima captured the dreamlike moment the young bear drifted off to sleep.

Nima says: ‘I am so honoured to have won this year’s People’s Choice award for WPY, the most prestigious wildlife photography competition. This photograph has stirred strong emotions in many of those who have seen it.

‘Whilst climate change is the biggest challenge we face, I hope that this photograph also inspires hope; there is still time to fix the mess we have caused.’

Check out 'How to Photograph Coral Reefscapes' by Tethys Images

'Coral reefs have been described as ‘the pinnacle of nature’s achievement in the oceans’, and support higher biodiversity than any other marine ecosystem. Recent estimates suggest over 800,000 species of multicellular life inhabit coral reefs, a number rivalled only by tropical rainforests.

One key difference between these two ecosystems is that so many rainforest taxa are hard to spot and even harder to photograph, hidden away in the dense vegetation or high up in the canopy. In contrast, a healthy reef appears like nature’s equivalent of a vibrant city, bustling with life of all shapes and sizes in every direction...'

This ‘Cow Tusker’ is the Queen of Elephants!

'Wildlife photographer Will Burrard-Lucas recently amazed people all around the world with his image of a black leopard captured in Kenya. However, he’s already back with a new find that “eclipses the black leopard in terms of rarity.”

In partnership with the Tsavo Trust, Burrard-Lucas has captured the “Queen of Elephants” on camera. This “cow tusker” is a female elephant with tusks so long that they scraped the ground whilst she was walking!'
