Lebanon Establishes International Presence in the Wine Sector: Director General of the Ministry of Agriculture Receives Zahle's Designation as a "World City of Vine and Wine" in Dijon
Within the framework of strengthening international cooperation and developing the vine and wine sector, the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture participated in the meetings of the Executive Board and General Assembly of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), held in Dijon, France. The Ministry was represented by its Director General, Engineer Louis Lahoud, Permanent Representative of Lebanon to the organization, along with representatives of member states.
The attendees discussed the state of the vine and wine sector in member states and approved the organization's new strategy for the period 2026-2030. This strategy aims to support innovation and sustainability and promote scientific and commercial exchange between wine-producing countries.
During the meetings, the organization's Director General, John Parker, and his Deputy, Yann Jupien, presented Engineer Louis Lahoud with the certificate for the city of Zahle's classification as a "World Cities of Vine and Wine," which the organization announced last July. Zahle is one of ten global cities to have earned this prestigious designation.
In his speech on the occasion, Parker emphasized that the selection of Zahle reflects the organization's confidence in Lebanese wine and its quality, and embodies its appreciation for the joint efforts of the Lebanese Ministry of Agriculture and Lebanese wine producers. He emphasized that Zahle deserves this honor as it hosts the largest percentage of Lebanese wine grape and winegrower areas.
For his part, Lahoud conveyed the greetings of the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Nizar Hani, and his thanks, on behalf of the ministry, the Lebanese wine sector, and the city of Zahle, to the international organization for this confidence and recognition. He considered this classification the result of integrated cooperation between the Ministry of Agriculture, the Municipality of Zahle - Maalaka and Taanayel, and the Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Agriculture of Zahle and the Bekaa.
Lahoud praised the fruitful cooperation between the organization and the Ministry of Agriculture, which has contributed to the development of the Lebanese wine sector and its global visibility. He noted that Lebanon's participation in the meetings confirms the ministry's commitment to embracing the principle of international partnership and strengthening Lebanon's position as a key player in formulating global agricultural and food policies.
He also highlighted the efforts made by the ministry over the past years to modernize the wine sector, particularly the establishment of the National Institute of Vine and Wine and the opening of new export markets. These efforts have led to increased Lebanese wine exports and consolidated its reputation as an ambassador for Lebanon abroad.
Lahoud commended Lebanese wine producers who continue their work and investments despite economic challenges, emphasizing that their commitment to international specifications and standards has made Lebanese wine a symbol of quality and excellence.
Lahoud presented the Ministry of Agriculture's future projects and programs for the wine sector to the organization. The organization agreed to cooperate with the ministry and the National Institute of Vine and Wine in Lebanon on mechanisms for determining designations of origin and geographical indications, registering local wine grape varieties (Obaidi and Merwah), and determining standards for approving the Châteaux, Caves, and Coteaux appellations.
On the sidelines of the meetings, Lahoud held a meeting with the organization's Director General, John Parker. During the meeting, he contacted the Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Nizar Hani, who thanked the organization for designating Zahle as a World City of Vine and Wine and extended an invitation to Parker to visit Lebanon.
It was agreed to organize an international wine conference in Lebanon in June 2026 with the participation of a high-level delegation from the international organization.
Lahoud also held coordination meetings with several participating delegations, addressing common challenges related to climate change, promoting exports, and exchanging expertise in wine development and improving its competitiveness in global markets.
لبنان يكرّس حضوره الدولي في قطاع النبيذ: مدير عام وزارة الزراعة تسلّم في ديجون شهادة تصنيف زحلة "مدينة عالمية للكرمة والنبيذ"
في إطار تعزيز التعاون الدولي وتطوير قطاع الكرمة والنبيذ، شاركت وزارة الزراعة اللبنانية في اجتماعات الهيئة التنفيذية والجمعية العمومية للمنظمة الدولية للكرمة والنبيذ (OIV) التي عُقدت في مدينة ديجون الفرنسية، ممثلة بمديرها العام المهندس لويس لحود، المندوب الدائم للبنان لدى المنظمة، إلى جانب ممثلي الدول الأعضاء.
وقد ناقش المجتمعون واقع قطاع الكرمة والنبيذ في الدول الأعضاء، وجرى إقرار الاستراتيجية الجديدة للمنظمة للفترة الممتدة بين 2026 و2030، والتي تهدف إلى دعم الابتكار والاستدامة وتعزيز التبادل العلمي والتجاري بين الدول المنتجة للنبيذ.
وخلال الاجتماعات، سلّم المدير العام للمنظمة جون باركر ونائبه يان جوبيان، المهندس لويس لحود شهادة تصنيف مدينة زحلة ضمن قائمة "المدن العالمية للكرمة والنبيذ" التي أعلنتها المنظمة في تموز الماضي، لتكون زحلة واحدة من عشر مدن عالمية حازت هذا التصنيف المرموق.
وفي كلمته بالمناسبة، أكد باركر أن اختيار زحلة يعكس ثقة المنظمة بالنبيذ اللبناني وجودته، ويجسّد تقديرها للجهود المشتركة التي تبذلها وزارة الزراعة اللبنانية ومنتجو النبيذ في لبنان، مؤكدًا أن زحلة تستحق هذا التكريم كونها تحتضن النسبة الأكبر من المساحات المزروعة بعنب النبيذ والخمّارات اللبنانية.
من جهته، نقل لحود تحيات وزير الزراعة الدكتور نزار هاني وشكره باسم الوزارة وقطاع النبيذ اللبناني ومدينة زحلة، للمنظمة الدولية على هذه الثقة والتكريم، معتبرًا أن هذا التصنيف هو ثمرة تعاون متكامل بين وزارة الزراعة وبلدية زحلة – معلقة وتعنايل وغرفة التجارة والصناعة والزراعة في زحلة والبقاع.
وأشاد لحود بعلاقات التعاون المثمر بين المنظمة ووزارة الزراعة، والتي أسهمت في تطوير قطاع النبيذ اللبناني والتعريف به عالميًا، مشيرًا إلى أن مشاركة لبنان في الاجتماعات تؤكد التزام الوزارة بتكريس مبدأ الشراكة الدولية وتعزيز موقع لبنان كفاعل أساسي في صياغة السياسات الزراعية والغذائية العالمية.
كما أشار إلى الجهود التي بذلتها الوزارة خلال السنوات الماضية لتحديث قطاع النبيذ، ولا سيما إنشاء المعهد الوطني للكرمة والنبيذ وفتح أسواق تصدير جديدة، ما أدى إلى زيادة صادرات النبيذ اللبناني وترسيخ سمعته كسفيرٍ للبنان في الخارج.
ووجّه لحود تحيةً لمنتجي النبيذ اللبناني الذين يواصلون عملهم واستثماراتهم رغم التحديات الاقتصادية، مؤكّدًا أن التزامهم بالمواصفات والمعايير الدولية جعل من النبيذ اللبناني رمزًا للجودة والتميز.
وعرض لحود أمام المنظمة مشاريع وبرامج وزارة الزراعة المستقبلية لقطاع النبيذ، فوافقت المنظمة على التعاون مع الوزارة والمعهد الوطني للكرمة والنبيذ في لبنان حول آليات تحديد تسميات المنشأ والمؤشرات الجغرافية، وتسجيل الأصناف المحلية من عنب النبيذ (عبيدي ومرواح)، وتحديد معايير اعتماد تسميات Châteaux, Caves, Coteaux.
وعلى هامش الاجتماعات، عقد لحود اجتماعًا مع المدير العام للمنظمة جون باركر، تم خلاله الاتصال بوزير الزراعة الدكتور نزار هاني، الذي أعرب عن شكره للمنظمة على اعتماد زحلة مدينة عالمية للكرمة والنبيذ، موجّهًا الدعوة إلى باركر لزيارة لبنان.
وقد تم الاتفاق على تنظيم مؤتمر دولي للنبيذ في لبنان في حزيران 2026 بمشاركة وفد رفيع من المنظمة الدولية.
كما أجرى لحود لقاءات تنسيقية مع عدد من الوفود المشاركة، تناولت التحديات المشتركة المتعلقة بتغيّر المناخ، وتعزيز الصادرات، وتبادل الخبرات في مجالات تطوير النبيذ وتحسين قدرته التنافسية في الأسواق العالمية.
