Artist Of The Week!!

Dakota Bear

Born in Saskatoon, Bear recalls witnessing (and later experiencing) family members struggling with addictions, malformed coping mechanisms, and unhealed inter-generational traumas caused by Residential “School” abuse, neglect, and identity-cultural persecution. During childhood, his pen became medicine – gifted with the love of words from his grandmother, young Bear wrote poems and short stories. But Eminem’s 8 Mile changed his life. The film’s unflinching look at addiction, family trauma, poverty, and self-reliance profoundly resonated, as did the music.

“The hip-hop soundtrack inspired and empowered me to start creating music to tell my own story and uplift others,” he says. “I just got attached to it, I just got drawn in.” When his mother gave him the option of a high-tech microphone or boxing classes, he picked the mic, and by 16 he was headlining his own DIY show to debut his self-made mixtape. It was a success, built on YouTube videos shot by his then eight-year-old brother on a flip camera, and lyrical content that resonated. Today, his music accolades include sharing the stages with hip-hop icons like Bone Thugs n’ Harmony, Redman, Method Man, and Tech N9ne. And now another side of his life has quickly stepped up beside his music to take centre stage: activism.

Artist Of The Week!!

Blue Mountain Tribe

Back in the mid-2000s in Tehachapi, California, father and son duo Robin and Caleb Hairston set out to create an all-Native American blues and rock band—and that’s exactly what they did.

As a “band of brothers,” the Blue Mountain Tribe began creating original songs focused on Native American experiences, and they instantly became a hit.

Since its formation, the band has received numerous accolades. The song “Pray for Our Planet” alone has earned significant global achievements. Written in the wake of COVID-19 after the highly-respected Chief Arvol Looking Horse asked Blue Mountain Tribe to pray for healing, the song has won Best Music Video at the INDO French International Film Festival, the Latino and Native American Film Festival, and the Las Vegas Film Festival.

Blue Mountain Tribe continues to produce award-winning music, but their mission isn’t about garnering wealth and fame. It’s all about raising awareness, helping others, and making the world a better place. Conveying themes of inspiration and love but also pain and rage, the band’s songs represent not just each member’s own Indigenous heritage but all 500+ original Nations.

Artist of the Week!!!

Morgan Toney

Morgan Toney is a Mi'kmaq folk singer-songwriter and fiddler from Nova Scotia, Canada, whose music blends Celtic folk and traditional Mi'kmaq music. He is a member of the Wagmatcook First Nation.

Toney began his musical career as a drummer, but began learning the fiddle in the late 2010s. He met singer-songwriter Keith Mullins, with whom he planned to record an album but found their plans halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He made his debut at the virtual edition of the Celtic Colours festival in 2020, sharing the stage with Ashley MacIsaac.

Toney and Mullins then launched a GoFundMe page to assist in the recording of Toney's debut album First Flight, which was released independently in 2021. He received a Canadian Folk Music Award nominee for Indigenous Songwriter of the Year at the 17th Canadian Folk Music Awards in 2022, and First Flight was reissued in March 2022 on Ishkōdé Records, a record label owned and operated by Amanda Rheaume and ShoShonna Kish.

Artist Of The Week!!

Redbone

Redbone is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1969 by brothers Pat and Lolly Vegas. All members during their commercial peak and success were of Mexican American and Native American heritage, which was heavily reflected in their songs, stage costumes, and album art.

They reached the Top 5 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1974 with their hit single, "Come and Get Your Love". The single went certified Gold selling over a million copies. It also made Redbone the first Native American band to reach the top five on the US Billboard Hot 100, with the song reaching number 5. Redbone achieved success in the United States with their singles "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee", "The Witch Queen of New Orleans", "Wovoka", and "Maggie", although these songs were more successful overseas.

Artist Of The Week!!

Lyle Odjick & The Northern Steam

Originating from the Algonquin reservation of Kitigan Zibi, QC, now based in Ottawa, ON, Lyle Odjick went from living in a small town with very little exposure to blues or live music to teaching himself harmonica, starting his own blues band and eventually earning a nomination in the Canada wide Maple Blues Awards for New Artist of the Year in 2022.

What began as a Chicago blues cover band with a fat swinging rhythm section and a harmonica wielding front man has evolved into a high energy blues-rock band with their own foot stomping sound. The release of debut album “Through The Rain” in 2022 was met with North American wide radio play landing in The Roots Music Report’s Top 50 Canadian Albums at #6 in it’s third week on the charts. In the blink of an eye Odjick went from strumming in a small town to opening for heavy hitting acts such as Colin James, Randy Bachman, Monkeyjunk and Paul Reddick.

Whether they’re showcasing their original blues-rock material or performing a modern take on a Chicago blues classic, Lyle Odjick & The Northern Steam never cease to turn heads at every venue they play.

A few recent festival appearances include:
– RBC Ottawa Bluesfest (x3)
– Calabogie Blues & Ribfest (x2)
– Mont Tremblant International Bluesfest
– Kingston Limestone City Bluesfest
– Kemptville Live Music Festival
– Junofest Ottawa
– Ottawa’s Westfest

Artist Of The Week!

Chester Knight

He was initially active in music as leader of the band Chester Knight and the Wind, in which he was the sole constant member; other supporting musicians over the band's lifetime included his brother Vernon Knight on backing vocals, bass player Darryl Ross, lead guitarists Malcolm Pooyak and Todd Duncan, and drummers K.K. Nogada, Robin Turner and Hal Schrenk.

In 1996 the band released its debut album Freedom, which was shortlisted for Best Aboriginal Recording at the Juno Awards of 1997. Falling Down followed in 1999 in addition to its Juno Award win, the album won a Prairie Music Award and an Aboriginal Music Award. The following year, Falling Down was reissued in the United States with the alternate title Windfall.

Knight released the album Standing Strong in 2002 as a solo artist, although he still toured under the band name. Guest musicians on the album included Brandon Friesen, Lucie Idlout, Derek Miller and Paul Carrack. The album was again a Juno nominee for Aboriginal Recording at the Juno Awards of 2003, and Knight won Songwriter of the Year for "Cochise Was a Warrior" at the Aboriginal Music Awards. In 2004, his music video for "Love Fades Away" won the award for Best Music Video at the American Indian Film Festival.

With his band now consisting of his sons Lancelot and Daniel, a new album was in the planning stages in 2004. The album did not materialize, although Knight continued to perform selected festival tour dates in Western Canada.

In 2013, he released "Idle No More (Tomahawk)", a song inspired by the Idle No More activist movement which was his first new release since Standing Strong. He followed up in 2015 with the single "Indian Girl".

Artist Of The Week!

Ernest Morias

Born and raised in Cross Lake, Manitoba, Ernest soon found that he had a gift for touching people with music. Over his career Ernest has released 18 albums and has performed many different styles of music including gospel, country, and rock.

Entertaining coast to coast, Ernest’s stage presence has allowed him to charm audiences in bars, community halls, and arenas across Canada. Ernest’s unique vocal resonance and delivery distinguish him from all other entertainers.

Known as the "Elvis of the North" Ernest is truly a northern musical legend. From countless years on the scene with numerous albums, Ernest has built a following that defies description.

For as long as he can remember, Ernest has loved music. As a small child attending residential school in Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, he sang with the Glee Club and even traveled to Montréal to perform for Expo '67.

D, G, and A: These were the first three guitar chords that he learned from his uncle at the age of thirteen. Ernest learned the rest on his own by watching, listening and spending countless hours teaching himself to play. Now, it is hard to imagine seeing Ernest without a Guitar in his hands.

By 15 Ernest was singing songs on his own and to his own guitar accompaniment.
He formed his first band - The Sons of Manitou - while still in high school. Later on his career Ernest would be accompanied by the now legendary Shadows.

Off stage, Ernest is soft spoken and modest. He has become a leader in his community and a role model for young people. He regrets that he did not have many aboriginal artists to look up to when he was young and is now more than happy to fulfill that role for others. Ernest is always encouraging young artists who want to make their way in the music business.

"If you have a dream, follow it and you'll get there," says Ernest. "You have to be strong in your heart and keep going even when the road is rough and even when the road is rocky."
