THE GREAT SEA STORY

The passenger steamer SS Warrimoo was quietly knifing its way through the waters of the mid-Pacific on its way from Vancouver to Australia. The navigator had just finished working out a star fix and brought Captain John DS. Phillips, the result. The Warrimoo's position was LAT 0º 31' N and LONG 179 30' W. The date was 31 December 1899.

"Know what this means?"

First Mate Payton broke in, "We're only a few miles from the intersection of the Equator and the International Date Line". Captain Phillips was prankish enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for achieving the navigational freak of a lifetime.

He called his navigators to the bridge to check & double check the ship's position. He changed course slightly so as to bear directly on his mark. Then he adjusted the engine speed. The calm weather & clear night worked in his favor. At mid-night the SS Warrimoo lay on the Equator at exactly the point where it crossed the International Date Line!

The consequences of this bizarre position were many:
The forward part (bow) of the ship was in the Southern Hemisphere & in the middle of summer.
The rear (stern) was in the Northern Hemisphere & in the middle of winter.
The date in the aft part of the ship was 31 December 1899.
In the bow (forward) part it was 1 January 1900.

This ship was therefore not only in:
Two different days,
Two different months,
Two different years,
Two different seasons
But in two different centuries - all at the same time!

I choose to not participate in the silence that protects perpetrators and isolates survivors.

I legally changed my name & have lived under an address protection program from my ex-husband since 1999.

The truth is inherently powerful. Remember that.

"A victim's first scream is for help; a victim's second scream is for justice." - Coral Anika Theill, BONSHEA Making Light of the Dark

The price for my own safety and freedom in 1996 was an imposed, unnatural and unwanted separation from my eight children, including my nursing infant. The injustice committed against me is not just the physical separation from my children, but the willful desecration of the mother-child relationship and bond, a sacred spiritual and emotional entity.

I escaped him but lost what was most precious to me - my 8 children, including my nursing infant. I survived and lived to write my life story.

This is so great

I was so moved to see Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson confirmed this afternoon. Like so many of you, I can’t help but feel a sense of pride—a sense of joy—to know that this deserving, accomplished Black woman will help chart our nation’s course. So many women of color now have a new role model to look up to as she serves on the highest court of the land. Thank you, Justice Jackson, for giving Black girls and women everywhere—including my daughters—a new dream to dream, a new path to forge, and a future we can all be hopeful for.

Having experienced bullying at a young age and growing weary of mass shootings, Ramona resident Kelly Seweryn decided to make changes for the better in her corner of the world through a Girl Scouts project.

KELLY ROSE GOES FOR THE GOLD

Hello,My name is Kelly.I am a 2nd year Senior Girl Scout and I am working on my Gold Award.I have already earned The Bronze and Silver Awards.I started Girl Scouts when I was 5 years old and am excited about graduating high school and becoming a lifetime member of Girl Scouts. In my 11 years as a Girl Scout,I have sold over 5,000 boxes of cookies and have donated many hours of my time to community service.

My mission for this project is to spread the word on how important it is to be empathetic, kind, compassionate and caring.Through the Girl Scouts , I have learned about the importance of Courage,Confidence and Character. But have also noticed the lack of Empathy in the world. My goal is to provide information on how to respond when someone trusts you with their feelings.

By using the hashtag #BeWiseEmpathize I am certain that we can change the current climate….one share/post at a time. Please check back often and Come along on my journey FOR THE GOLD!
