President Donald Trump has warned Iran that the US is ready to "rescue" protesters if security forces fire on them and kill them.

His comments, made on his Truth Social platform, follow days of protests in Iran that have left several people dead.

"We are locked and loaded and ready to go," Trump also said.

In response, the secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, said interference in domestic Iranian affairs would equal the destabilization of the whole region. He also accused the US and Israel of fueling the demonstrations.

"The people of the US should know that Trump began the adventurism. They should take care of their own soldiers," he wrote on social media platform X.

Six people, including a paramilitary officer, have reportedly been killed, according to state-affiliated media.

Meanwhile, the country's elected President Masoud Pezeshkian pledged dialogue with protest leaders over Iran's cost-of-living crisis, while rights groups reported that security forces had fired on demonstrators.

The protests, initially led by traders in Tehran, were first sparked by a fall in the value of the local currency against the US dollar amid Iran's already struggling economy.

The unrest soon spread to other locations and has widened into demands for wider change within the country.

China has started collecting a 13% value-added tax on contraceptive drugs and products in a move to boost the country's fertility rate as it grapples with an ageing population.

Such products had been exempted from tax for over three decades. Contraception has been actively encouraged and easily accessible, even for free.

But as China's population began to peak and then fell, the birth limit was raised from two children in 2015 to three in 2021. In 2024, 9.5 million babies were born in China, one-third fewer than the 14.7 million born in 2019.

The effect of the tax on boosting fertility "will be very limited" amidst the higher costs of raising a child compared to contraceptive products, Qian Cai, director of the Demographics Research Group at the University of Virginia, told AP.

Some also feel offended by the authorities' invasive approach to their personal lives and bodies. "It is a disciplinary tactic, a management of women's bodies and my sexual desire," Zou Xuan, a 32-year-old teacher in the Jiangxi province, told AP.

Experts also expressed concerns that reduced condom use could lead to more unintended pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections, which could drive abortions and higher health-care costs.

Mourners in Switzerland held a vigil at the ski resort of Crans-Montana, less than 24 hours after dozens were killed when a fire ripped through a crowded bar during a New Year's Eve party.

Around 40 people were killed and at least 115 others were injured in the fire at the 'Le Constellation' bar.

Hundreds of people stood in silence near the scene as they came to pay their respects to the victims.

"You think you're safe here, but this can happen anywhere. They were people like us," said 18-year-old Piermarco Pani.

Flags have been lowered to half-mast on public buildings across the country, and the government has announced five days of national mourning for the victims.

Investigators are now working to identify the bodies, with authorities saying it could take days to name all the victims due to the severity of burns.

Families of missing loved ones have been waiting for news, and foreign embassies have been scrambling to work out if their nationals were caught up in one of the worst tragedies Switzerland has seen in years.

Mathias Reynard, head of government of the canton of Valais, said experts were using dental and DNA samples for the task.

"All this work needs to be done because the information is so terrible and sensitive that nothing can be told to the families unless we are 100 percent sure," he said.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but authorities believe the tragedy was an accident rather than an attack.
