Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss peace in Ukraine, drawing ire from other European Union leaders who warned against appeasing Moscow and insisted he did not speak for the bloc.

At a press conference in Moscow on Friday with Putin, Orban said that Hungary viewed its six-month stint in the rotating European Council presidency as a peace mission.

"Many steps are needed to end the war, but we took the first step to restore dialogue," Orban said, adding that "points of view remained far from each other in Kyiv and Moscow."

Putin, meanwhile, called the conversation with Orban "frank and useful," and reiterated his demand that Ukraine pull its troops out of four eastern regions claimed — but not fully controlled — by Moscow.

"We are talking about the full withdrawal of all troops from the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics, and from the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions," Putin said.

Orban also visited Kyiv, for the first time since Russia's invasion, earlier in the week.

His visit to Moscow has been heavily criticized by the EU leaders.

The EU's top diplomat Josep Borrell said Orban does not represent the European Union on his visit. He dismissed the visit as a bilateral meeting between Moscow and Budapest.

It was a position reiterated by Borrell's incoming replacement, outgoing Estonian PM Kaja Kallas.

"He is exploiting the EU presidency to sow confusion," Kallas said.

Hippos are often portrayed as sluggish, but not only can they run at a speed of up to 30km/h, they can even become airborne for "substantial periods of time," a new study by the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in the UK has found.

Unlike other mammals their size — elephants for example — hippos can lift off the ground for up to 0.3 seconds at a time when running at full speed.

This means, sometimes all four of their hooves lose contact with the earth, making it look like they're gliding through the air.

Hippos are among the largest land animals, often weighing more than 2,000 kilograms. They are well known for spending a lot of time in the water, but little is known about their movement on land.

While they may appear harmless, the hefty mammals are extremely dangerous when provoked, so RVC researchers resorted to carefully examining video footage of hippos on land.

"We're thrilled to provide the first study purely focused on revealing how hippos walk and run. We were pleasantly surprised to see how hippos get airborne when they move quickly – it's really impressive!", John Hutchinson, professor of evolutionary biomechanics and lead author of the study, said.
