🍷 Have you heard of Viti-forestry?

For a growing number of wine makers, trees in and around vineyards makes a lot of sense.

Why is this?

🌳 Trees improve microclimates, reducing abiotic stress on vines in the context of a radicalising climate.

🍄 Trees improve the mycorrhizal connectivity of the vineyard - improving drought tolerance and a myriad of other benefits

🐞 Native trees create habitat for the predators of common pests

We had a fantastic time with Jean-Baptiste Cordonnier from to discuss their last 30 years of agronomic transitions from wild to conventional to agroecological.

The economic case for cattle silvopastural systems!

A year ago we talked to Jim Elizondo, agronomist, founder of Real Wealth Ranching by Jaime Elizondo and expert in regenerative grazing practices. He is currently scaling a leucaena system on his ranch, aiming to gradually double his stocking rate thanks to the trees!

Here is some feedback from episode #28 with Jim:

1. Leucaena improves pasture growth.
2. Trees improve microclimates to reduce animal stress and improve animal weight gain.
3. When organised in lines, trees are easy to protect from cattle with electric fencing.
4. Leucaena offers a fantastic fodder source, complementing herbaceous forage and building resilience.
5. These organised silvopastural systems are economically viable!

Found out more in the interview!

🌳 In agroforestry, we are always trying to balance system complexity with management efficiency.

🇧🇷 One of the most complex agricultural systems we have come across is Syntropic Farming. So we wanted to find out how it can be scaled up. To answer this question, we went to Mata do Lobo, a 2000ha row crop farm in Brasil that is transitioning to Regen Ag.

🧑‍🌾 We talked to Daniel, who has been working these past years with his partner Maria Vittoria on establishing a 50ha coffee agroforestry system.

🎙 Tune in to find out about the difference between agroforestry and conventional coffee, to understand the compromises they had to make, and lots more technical details!

Farming can be a huge challenge. Even more so for farmers that strive to produce regeneratively.

In 2015, Josh and Abi Heyneke set up Parc Carreg, a diversified operation based on duck eggs on 4ha of land in Wales.

We interviewed Josh more than a year ago (episode #15) to understand how they created a multi-specie integrated farm.

Yet, we were extremely sad to learn that this may be there last winter farming. They have been hit hard by recent animal feed price surges, amongst other challenges they face in their farm operation.

Josh and Abi have summoned the immense courage to openly discuss WHY it has become so challenging in long format videos on youtube.

We would like to thank Josh and Abi for their honesty and to allow us to learn from their mistakes.

🧑‍🌾 For Campbell Mercer, farming is about being a steward of the land by caring for his whole ecosystem, which includes his clients by supplying them with award winning premium extra virgin olive oil.

🌳 So how does he achieve this?

- Integrating biodiverse windbreaks
- Protecting marginal areas with productive farm forestry
- Diversifying the landscape with diverse forestry plantations
- Protecting riparian areas by allowing natural vegetation to express itself and by not farming them intensively
- Integrating sheep as landscape managers
- Protecting soil by planting trees according to the Keyline cultivation pattern
- Working with regenerative experts: Campbell collaborated with the Regrarians team to design the farm (check out episode #24 with Darren Doherty)

🌾 Diversified farms mean diversified landscapes and healthy ecosystems. Pioneers such as Campbell are allowing farmers to learn integrate agroforestry and regenerative practices with less risk and more guarantee for success.

🐓 This week, we interviewed David Brass to understand why The Lakes Free Range Egg Co. has integrated agroforestry throughout their production system, at scale. The company's operation represents 70 farmers and 2 million birds.

In this episode we found out:

- What is the optimum tree density
- Why walnuts are better than willows
- What secondary products tree can be produced in addition to the eggs
- What is the impact on hen mortality
- What is the impact on egg quality

After carrying out a variety of studies on his operation, David is convinced of that silvo-poulty has numerous advantages and no significant trade-offs.
We hope you enjoy!

🚜 We all know that, in farming, success is in the details!

🌳 Enjoy the details of this 5ha walnut alley cropping system carried out by the team at .

🌾 In practice, we see farmers around the globe adopting alley cropping in order to cash flow whilst diversifying yields with high value tree crops, like walnut. The elegance of it lies in the fact that diversifying with perennials also means improving biodiversity and storing carbon.

🌰 In such a tight spacing, the alley crop yield is likely to drop below profitability thresholds when the tree canopies grow. Furthermore the management needs of the alleys can hinder the management needs of the trees. This system will therefore gradually shift focus from the annual to the perennial crop. There are so many ways of doing this - adapted to each context! Farmers can play with the following: distance between tree lines, tree species and alley crop species.

Two weeks ago, we attended the Regenerative Agriculture and Food Systems Summit organised by Research.

As media partners, we did mini-interviews with 8 conference attendees to better understand how Regen Ag is being scaled through the food industry supply chain.

We are quite enthusiastic about the results, as some of the big players are engaging with farmers to facilitate and incentivise farm transitions. The impact is potentially huge, but it depends on: a common outcome based definition of Regen Ag, strong monitoring, adapaptability to local contexts, control against greenwashing, derisking farm transitions, financial sector support and much more.

🐄 How can trees help build resilience to temperature extremes in cattle farming?

The heat we have been experiencing recently poses serious risks for productivity and animal welfare.

🌳 We all know the feeling of walking under a large tree canopy in the summer heat! Cows also feel that difference and even produce more thanks to it - here's the science to prove it.

We have many examples of farmers planting trees on their landscape without compromising overall grass productivity.
