If you’ve been snowed out of your early Valentine’s date this evening, we have a solution for you. Check out this recipe for a boozy twist on traditional hot coco, which adds red wine for a decadent, adult-only treat. And you can make it all in a crock-pot, for peak convenience and easy clean up.
Combine 2 ½ cups of semisweet chocolate chips, ¼ of a cup of cocoa powder, ½ a cup of granulated sugar, a pinch of salt, 6 cups of whole milk and 1 bottle of red wine in a slow cooker. Cook on high for one hour, whisking every 20 minutes. Ladle the coco into mugs and serve with marshmallows and chocolate shavings.

Valentine’s Day is the day after tomorrow! In honor of the most romantic holiday of the year, BERGEN continues to tell the love stories of our readers. Today’s story is something right out of a movie…
…And begins with Judit Agod from Dumont taking a 2-week vacation to Corfu in Greece while in her early 20s. She’d spent the last few years working two jobs to save for college, and this trip was her first chance to truly rechange in a long time. While there, her group passed a young man who worked at a beach jetty, and he invited them to try out tubing and parasailing. They took him up on the offer. The young man’s name was András. Later that night, they ended up in the same bar, where Judit and András danced and talked all night. They continued to meet up after he got out of work each day, which eventually escalated to them renting a motorcycle and spending the second week of Judit’s vacation exploring the island together. “I was in love and told him if he felt the same, to come to the U.S. He traveled home to Hungary, sold everything he owned, bought a plane ticket to the U.S. and followed me,” Judit explains. A year later, they were married in a quick City Hall ceremony, with no dress, no friends and no parents (their witness also didn’t show up, so they needed to borrow someone from the room next door). After 25 years of marriage, they decided to have a proper ceremony at last – in Corfu, Greece, right back where it all began.

Our Valentine’s Day countdown continues! As we approach the holiday, BERGEN magazine is honoring the love stories of you, our readers. Today’s story is of an odd couple turned perfect match:
Patricia and Bob Judge went to the same high school, but grew up “worlds apart” – he was the school’s superstar football player, and Patricia describes herself as “a very shy bookworm.” Their paths diverged further when Patricia left for college to become a secretary and Bob went right into a sales job. However, fate brought them back together when Patricia was 21 and she took a billing clerk at the same office Bob worked in. They discovered they graduated from the same school only a year apart. Did Patricia remember him? She said, “I think your name sounds familiar.” Soon, that office acquaintanceship grew into something more, and two years later they were married. Decades after, they got to watch history repeat itself – as Patricia reports, their daughter “didn’t date a particular football player in high school, but years later started dating him when he came home from college.” They were married in 2001. Natalie and Obie McKenzie of Englewood met 25 years ago, when she was a personal trainer and wellness coach and he was a Wall Street executive. What started off as a professional relationship transitioned into a courtship after what Natalie calls a year of a “refined form of polite persistence.” And that’s when the romantic gestures really began, including “leaving a Jamaican breakfast at my door and planting flowers in the flower bed outside my apartment while I was away,” as Natalie recalls to BERGEN. “I realized he was going to be a permanent presence in my life.” Together, these two have traveled across the globe, strolling across beaches and raising toasts in fine restaurants. And that’s not all. “He even serenades me with love songs,” Natalie adds.
