As mentioned last time, in "Impossible Voyages", I'm watching and writing about a run of new (to me) science fiction films to be watched over this year (and possibly beyond). You can read the rationale and ground rules here. In the meantime, we are advancing from 1904 to 1908 with this movie, the second in this series....

As we kick off 2025, I'm beginning "Impossible Voyages", my watch-and-blog-thru science fiction film from over the last 120+ years which I have never gotten around to watch. Unlike some of my previous self-imposed film-watching challenges, I haven't strictly defined this one up front. I'm not sure how many films I'll include, and I haven't given myself a strict deadline (ie a year) to complete it....

The latest Doctor Who Christmas special was Joy to the World, produced by current showrunner Russell T. Davies but written by former showrunner Steven Moffat. It's Moffat's second script for Doctor Who in this most recent era, and if his comments are to be believed, possibly his last ever. Moffat has long been my favorite Doctor Who writer (even including the classic series), and…...

Three's a Crowd is another entry in the Big Finish "Main Range" of Doctor Who stories, released all the way back in May 2005, shortly after the modern series had gone onto the air. It was the 69th entry into the series, and starred Peter Davison as the Fifth Doctor, travelling at the time with Nicola Bryant as Peri and Caroline Morris as audio-only companion Erimem....

On a bit of a run after watching Rashomon recently, my friends and I checked out Seven Samurai...not at a theatre this time, but on a pretty big TV so it felt like quite the complete cinema experience. And what better movie to have a complete cinema experience than Akira Kurosawa's epic 1954 masterpiece, Seven Samurai? Spoilers ahoy...

I wrote about this in my last monthly round-up post, but I've been binge-watching my way through the series Chuck, which ended over ten years ago, and I finished just a few days ago. The whole process took less than two months, which I think might be the fastest I've ever watched through 91 episodes of anything....

Pretty much anyone who has had a pet knows that they can easily become part of your family, and so losing them is hard. It's not the same as losing a person, of course, at least not for me. But it's far from just nothing. Animals have personalities, and you get to know them individually, even personally. They bring an unpredictable but exciting…...

By and large you don't tend to associate heroic characters with those who shoot people dead in cold blood, but it does happen. And sometimes, it manages to even feel justified. And most impressively, it can feel justified when there's no obvious reason why this should be. Like, in real life, I have little sympathy for those who would gun down a defenceless victim, but thanks to the power of story and fiction, it can be made to feel…...

Thanks to my recent trip back from South Asia, I got to partake in another batch of fairly random movie-viewing; in many cases the sorts of things I'd only take the time with if I was stuck in an uncomfortable chair in a flying metal box for hours on end with nothing else to do....

Hello! I recently returned from a work-related trip to Asia. It was pretty short but exciting, and something I was really glad to be able to do. I even got to go into Malaysia during a long-layover and see some friends that I haven't caught up with for many years. There was a lot that I appreciated the places I visited--qualities that are unique, God-given and beautiful....
