One of the verbs doesn’t matter and couldn’t stand on its own, while the other loses any sense of agency or action. ***Search for these phrases during your second draft and see if there are opportunities to give the true verb its due.

People attribute this quote to Franz Kafka but it was actually written by Anne Rice in a forward to one of Kafka's collections. I think Stephen King also wrote a forward for Kafka one time too... It bothers me that so many people try to wedge Kafka into the same classification as modern pop horror and vampire writers. I love Anne Rice and Stephen King but they have nothing in common with Kafka. The Metamorphosis is not a horror story. Kafka created what we now know as modernism in literature, and though decades of college lit classes teaching "The Metamorphosis" have sought to flatten him and neatly box him up, his creative work defies any categorization. Also there are many accounts of him reading his own work in his writing circle in Prague and having to stop because he was laughing so hard. If he was into any genre it was comedy. He was chronically ill with tuberculosis but just because he had a tragic death doesn't mean he was a horror writer or was writing about fear. Pick up Kafka and remember that he wrote about joy, that he laughed while reading his own work. It is a much different experience than your 9th grade English class might have instilled in you.
