I’ve been waiting for the right time to announce this baby…
Not a human baby. But like a heart and soul baby. And I love her so much already I’m bursting at the seems to announce her ☺️

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege and honour of working with lots of women, capturing their stories from behind the lens.

In time, I have even come to describe my work in terms of their energy. A deeply feminine energy that is to the core raw, poetic, sometimes messy, sexual, and yet always, always, truthful and intimate. I promise.

This is the powerful feminine energy that birthed my newest baby. What I call, 𝙇𝙤𝙫𝙚 𝙁𝙞𝙡𝙢𝙨

What are love films? They are something I crafted from my heart and my hands and sort of stumbled across over time….

But I’ve come to see Love Films as these beautiful little time capsules of the most intimate moments of your life. They are films that tell YOUR greatest love story.

Whether it’s a wedding, a pregnancy, or a celebration of your body as she is today.

I am so incredibly proud of this baby 😌 she’s been a while coming

one of my life goals has always been to see the Northern Lights in all its rainbow beauty — purples, greens, pinks, and yellows. I have chased them many a times, often left stumped under a starry sky, which is a trip of its own, but not the one I was searching for.

Years ago, I finally saw a greenish glow. It made me want more. So, we went further North still and stood for two hours in the middle of the night in -30C weather, breath held.

Eventually, we watched giddy, as the green lights grew on their westward journey across the sky. They danced. That’s true.

Also true: they say the lights are always better through a camera. Turns out, our eyes physically can’t pick up the nuances in colour unless the flares are particularly strong. Sometimes, they appear to be nothing more than light pollution, or a dull, cloudy haze.

It took a while for these lights to glow green to ours eyes. We could have easily walked away, thinking nothing of the haze hanging over the northern sky.

Note to self: you cannot always see the magic unfolding before you

By the time I got home, I looked up the stats. You really have to dig, this isn’t something we as a society think should be common knowledge. So I had to do the math to figure out that on average it’s about 7 people a year. That they were most likely male, younger. That they had usually travelled quite far from outside the city just to come here because, here was a landmark.

Perhaps, they thought, their names would be remembered too if they ended it here.

Truth is, no one remembers. No one ever really hears of it. Suicides aren’t really talked about or published in the papers. Especially not when it clusters in a certain place. Like off of the Lions Gate bridge.

There were a lot of thoughts going through my mind, looking at that yellow box....

Dreams of moss 3. Trees

You can nerd out on anything. Even moss. Especially moss. You see, there’s a type of moss that’s so elusive you have to catch it in a certain light — sometimes lasting only a few seconds — just to know you’ve got it right.

Goblin’s gold, it’s called. For the way it comes to life, shimmering green-gold when a streak of rising or setting sunlight hits it just so.

Tucked away in wet crevices, between rocks, or overturned tree roots, it’s a type of moss that appears to be more algae, less evolved. But what would I know? I’ve never even seen it.

To increase my chances though, I have gone so far as to find a map, online, where moss folk have left coordinates of sightings from around the city. There are only 5 entries. The last one, years ago.

Often, as I walk the local forest where the last spotting of this 𝘴𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘴𝘵𝘰𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘨𝘢 𝘱𝘦𝘯𝘯𝘢𝘵𝘢 (as the bryologists call it) was in 1982, I start to doubt that I’ll actually ever see it. But then I look up at the tops of trees just as morning sunlight filters through, momentarily turning the forest into an iridescent sea of green and suddenly, it’s as if I already have. Or at least the semblance of it. The trees, drenched in the biomass of mosses and lichens appear to have a pulsing aura of goblin’s gold green. Aha, there it is, I’ll think, goosebumps running up my spine.

Follow me here just a step further, because I’ve come to realize that what I am chasing with Goblin’s Gold is not a moss per se, but this very aura, this momentary awe where something comes so suddenly alive.

Rudolf Otto famously called these moments the ‘numinous’. Mark Nepo elaborated: the moment where ‘everything touches everything else.’

I can’t say it any better, but what I know by now of these split moments is that, like Goblin’s Gold, they are not frequent sightings. In fact, they cannot be. 𝘐𝘯𝘧𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘺 𝘪𝘯𝘤𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘴𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 𝘰𝘧 𝘢𝘸𝘦.

That I believe explains goblin’s gold. How elusive it is. How special it is.

More of an experience than a moss. More happenstance than intention.
