As Muslims, we take pride in all of our acts of worship, whether it is standing in prayer or laying down an animal for sacrifice, because our only aim is to please Allah (ﷻ).

We ask Allah ﷻ to guide us to follow His religion as it is, to make the sunnah of our Prophet beloved to us, to accept our worship during the blessed days of Dhul Hijjah, to accept our sacrifices, and to allow us to live to do these acts of worship again.

The Qur’an is not poetry in which listeners may indulge in their own personal interpretations; rather, just the act of reading it is enough to receive the Almighty’s blessings, even without understanding its fullest meaning. The Qur’an is an oasis of knowledge that flows from the eternal Kalam of Allah.

Change occurs within ourselves first and foremost, by the guidance of transcendent moral guidelines, uninfluenced by the human condition. Allah ﷻ’s eternal words in the Qur’an declare:

Had the truth followed their desires, the heavens, the earth, and all those in them would have certainly been corrupted. In fact, We have brought them the means to their glory, but they turn away from it. (The Clear Quran, 23:71)

Ramadan Traditions in the Casbah of Algiers

Before modern technology, people stood on their rooftops to see if the imam of the Great Mosque hoisted up two flags at the top of the minaret. A white flag announced that ftour (iftar) was approaching, and a few minutes later, he would lower it to raise a green flag, officially indicating it was time to break fast.

From the 1940s onward, a cannon was used in place of the adhan.

Ramadan: Beyond the Nafs, Towards the Lord

Modernity fashions a human self that is primarily a consumer, thus, the ability to consume and to act impulsively upon one’s desires, and to live in the moment, become the defining features of human existence.

In contrast, Ramadan is a rejoinder that aims at fashioning a human self that is closer to fiṭrah, a self that does not live in the state of worldliness but is conscious of death and afterlife.

Ramadan: The Month of Qur’an

The angel Jibril used to meet the Prophet ﷺ every night in the month of Ramadan to teach him Qur’an.

We cannot revive our connection to the Qur’an without disconnecting from all that ensnares our hearts in the trivialities of this world. Muslims must embrace Ramadan as a time to withdraw from the noise, haste, and vicissitudes of modern life.

Exploring Spirituality within Ramadan

Imam Razi mentions the lexical origins of the word Ramadan. He mentions that it is derived from the word Ramdhaa’ (الرَّمْضاءِ) which is a rain that comes before autumn to cleanse the dust from the surface of the Earth.

Similarly, Ramadan comes as a spiritual rain to wash away our sins, cleanse our hearts and rejuvenate our resolve.

Ramadan Traditions in Constantine

On the first day of Ramadan, most families in Constantine prepare ghrayef (called baghrir in other regions) which is a spongy pancake of sorts made out of semolina.

At the halfway point of Ramadan, called naqfa in Constantine, a special meal is prepared and depending on the family, varying from shakhshoukha (ripped pieces of rougag or thin round flatbread steeped in stew), trida (artisanal pasta squares), or gritliya (vermicelli-like pasta dipped in a broth made with lamb, chickpeas, and kefta balls).

Ramadan: The Month of Anti-Imperialism

We live as minorities facing constant attrition by a hegemonic Western paradigm of life, increasingly deprived of the shield the Islamic paradigm offers.

Ramadan is a rejection of what the modern world forces onto humanity: gluttony, hyper-consumerism, the mechanization of time, and the obsession to exercise control over our lives.

Ramadan is a time for us to reorient ourselves towards the Divine, redefining our relationship with time, community, and the natural world.

[New Publication] Link in bio. The article by Abu Muhammad Razi and Salvatore Tarek Bagnato delves into the unique perspective of Ibn Taymiyya, an influential figure in Islamic civilization known for his unorthodox views. Rejecting traditional norms and relying on a pure Sunnī orthodoxy he believed to be rooted in early Islamic sources, Ibn Taymiyya challenged established theological concepts using revelation-based arguments while dismissing reason and logic.
