Pyroclastic Records presents Sculpting Sound, a groundbreaking collection of six once-in-a-lifetime performances bringing together twelve master improvisers with the sound sculptures of visionary artist Harry Bertoia.

These captivating performances, available as of the Winter Solstice, December 21, 2023 via SculptingSound.org, feature Nels Cline, Ben Monder, Ambrose Akinmusire, Nate Wooley, Ingrid Laubrock, JD Allen, Jen Shyu, Brandon Seabrook, Marcus Gilmore, Dan Weiss, Kris Davis and Craig Taborn

SculptingSound.org offers free and complete access to a series of revelatory performances recorded at the Nasher Sculpture Center in Dallas. The musicians were given unprecedented access Bertoia’s sculptures. The results blur the lines between music and visual art and provide an opportunity to hear strikingly fresh and innovative work from some of the most vital improvisers of our time and to explore Bertoia’s work, not just visually, but as he fully intended: sonically.

Nighttime Creatures - The Angelica Sanchez Nonet is out today!!!

After nearly three decades in the urban wilds of New York City, pianist/composer Angelica Sanchez has spent a good part of the last year living in a secluded cabin while teaching upstate. After the sun goes down, she discovered, the woods reveal a whole other world. “The woods transform at night, when the only light comes from a very thin crescent moon,” Sanchez describes. “You can't see your hand in front of your face, but the coyotes and other animals make more noise in the dark. I realized that it was only my ears that were activated in those moments. I became fascinated by what I couldn't see.”

The nonet was born of Sanchez’s love of big band music, a passion that spans the spectrum from Duke Ellington to Carla Bley to Anthony Braxton and Muhal Richard Abrams. While scaled down, the ensemble on Nighttime Creatures provides a wide range of dynamic and coloristic possibilities while retaining the individual voices and fluid spontaneity more possible with a small group.

“There's less safety in numbers,” Sanchez says, sounding inspired rather than daunted by the risk. “The individual personalities were really important to me, so I tried to create space for that. There's a lot of freedom within the music, and the musicians can choose how they want to exercise that freedom.”

“There’s something really great about capturing those first moments, but I wanted to try to do something that was a little more familiar to me, which is being on the road, playing the music every night and developing it with a group. That’s kind of what the Vanguard afforded this project — to play two sets a night and try the music in different ways. And just sit with it for some time, and find a band sound. So, that was really the plan — to see what would happen with the music after we had some time with it.”

Spectre uses primarily idiomatic impressions of The Rite but also specific reharmonization of previous Courvoisier creations in a Stravinsky-like mode of bitonality. In performing and recording these two works contiguously an additional subliminal conversation is created between them that manifests itself in dynamic interaction between the performers. In this way the reverberation of a classic masterwork is realized concretely in a present day creation.
