NEW 🔥🔥🔥 from : Safari is a jazz-fusion unit led by keyboardist Toshiyuki Daitoku, who played with George Otsuka, Mukai Shigeru, and Gregg Lee, a Californian who had previously played in fusion bands such as Caldera and Native Son.⁠

Their eponymous debut album ended up being the band’s sole LP. Released in 1984, the album itself is a hidden gem of AOR / jazz-fusion, showcasing mellow grooves and lush vocal harmonies. THINK OF IT AS LOST STEELY DAN INSTRUMENTALS CIRCA GAUCHO (track down "Day Dream at the Bob's Beach" on YouTube)⁠

Other standout tunes include the funky ‘The Morning After’, replete with the buoyant poolside vibes of midsummer, the Latin funk number ‘Brass Monkey’, and the mellow funk of ‘All Right in The Night'. Aside from of this album, Safari recorded a number of BGM tracks for the for the same label before disbanding. While this might explain the lack of due recognition for the band, more recently they have attracted a following among DJs and fans of the newly ascendant City Pop / Mellow Groove genres. After a steady stream of requests from them, the long-awaited reissue is finally here!⁠

Over the last five years, we've been working closely with our friends in Kyiv to bring you something incredibly special. The process has been politically fraught and not without extreme challenges, to say the least. There were times when we honestly thought this album would never see the light of day; it's nothing short of a small miracle that we can finally reveal Even the Forest Hums: Ukrainian Sonic Archives 1971-1996.

The first comprehensive collection of its kind, this release explores the flourishing Ukrainian music scene of the late 20th century—much of which was recorded under strict Soviet control. Featuring Ukrainian artist Maria Prymachenko’s beloved and iconic folk paintings, the project was lovingly put together in collaboration with Ukrainian label Shukai Records, Kyiv-based writer Vitalii “Bard” Bardetskyi, David Mas (“DBGO”), Mark “Frosty” McNeill, and Light in the Attic. A portion of proceeds will be donated to Livyj Bereh, a Kyiv-based volunteer group working to rebuild in the regions affected by ongoing war in Ukraine.

The 2xLP features a 20-page booklet with artist photos & liner notes in both English and Ukrainian, pressed on Clear Blue Sky & Sunflower Yellow wax; the CD edition features bonus content housed in a deluxe, 64-page hardbound book. 2xLP, CD, & digital are available now for pre-order and land on October 18, 2024. NEW 🔥🔥🔥 from Louisville Story Program:

In the mid-20th century, Louisville gospel music was occasionally recorded when members of the local gospel community pressed 45rpm records and LPs, and released them through grassroots record labels such as Sensational Sounds, Grace, Blessed, and D.J.S. Over the years, a substantial body of work was produced in Louisville, but those recordings are in danger of being lost forever.

The Louisville Story Program has been working with dozens of people in the local gospel music community to locate, digitize, and preserve hundreds of these recordings and to develop a book that documents and honors the legacies of the people and communities that produced them.

For decades, the passion, hard work, and support of countless people across dozens of Black church communities in Louisville have nurtured and sustained a rich gospel music ecosystem. This music has served as a central part of people's religious practice and as an expression of Black pride, joy, affirmation, love, dignity, determination, and hope. This legacy continues to this day.

With support from The Owsley Brown II Family Foundation and Owsley Brown III Philanthropic Foundation, LSP has partnered with members of the gospel community and a local advisory group of local gospel historians and luminaries:

To locate, clean, and digitize gospel records of local artists released by small local labels

To accompany the local Black gospel music community in developing a 4 CD box set that includes a 200+ page hardcover book with first-person documentation of their rich history

To create an accompanying double LP featuring 26 of those songs

To create and maintain a public-facing digital archive of 1,000 songs and 1,000 photographs

To celebrate the final release with a large concert at the Brown Theatre (September 28, 2024)Available in two formats: 2xLP on black vinyl or 4xCD box set

Happy birthday to the Son of the Sun, Willie Dunn! Born on this day in 1941 to a Mi’gmaq mother and father of English/Cornish descent, Dunn and the legacy he left behind are vital threads in the tapestry of Canada’s Indigenous people. The musician, filmmaker, artist, activist, politician, poet, and visionary was one of the original pioneers of Aboriginal equality, devoting his entire existence to that pursuit. It is a true honor to keep his memory alive through the music he created. Today, we proudly present the digital reissue of his 2004 release, Son of the Sun, on what would have been Willie's 83rd birthday. Happy heavenly birthday, Willie!

We are beyond thrilled to reveal our third release in the Lou Reed Archive Series, Why Don't You Smile Now: Lou Reed at Pickwick Records 1964-65.

Produced in partnership with Laurie Anderson & the Lou Reed Archive, this one has been decades in the making! Before Lou Reed fronted The Velvet Underground, he cut his teeth at a 9-to-5 as a songwriter for Long Island City label Pickwick Records. Reed would churn out pop hits du jour, most of which were intended for other singers, but a handful of these sessions would feature a singer with a particularly unmistakable, soon-to-be iconic voice. His days at Pickwick would leave an indelible mark not only on Reed but on rock ’n’ roll; it was here, as part of The Primitives—a faux-group formed to promote the Pickwick-penned, dance-craze single, ”The Ostrich”—that Lou would meet and first collaborate with his future VU-bandmate John Cale. 2xLP, CD, and merch ship 10/4; digital lands 9/27. The general theme of their material is a throwback to the pre-WW2 industrialization of Japan, and their music is stylistically a pastiche of early 20th century operatic pop.⁠

Produced by Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, Kaizou E No Yakudou (改造への躍動) was released in 1982 and makes heavy use of synthesizers mixed with traditional instruments, creating a unique and innovative sound.⁠

Speaking of Grooves, The year is 1971, a time when nightclubs still had live bands perform the musical hits of the day. Every city had its local stars and for the club scene of the city of Columbus, Ohio it was the CROWD PLEASERS. In April 1971 they went into the studio to record eight songs, but an actual release never materialized. In time the master tape was destroyed and all that was left were two acetates. But as time passed, these too were lost. Over the years, a growing market for obscure funk and soul albums emerged. When one of the acetates went up for sale on eBay in 2011, it sold for $3,900! Eleven years later, in 2022, the last remaining copy also appeared on eBay. Collectors drove the price up until it finally sold for a staggering $7,000! So now, after more than 53 years, Al Carey & Regrooved Records proudly presents the previously unreleased 1971 album of the CROWD PLEASERS featuring renditions of hits by Marvin Gaye, Sly Stone's Little Sister, Neil Young, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Cold Blood, Dionne Warwick, The Lettermen and the original funk break track “Eggs & Bacon”...

A cult album that would later inspire bands like Stereolab, with dreamy vocal harmonies as the main attraction, laced with Brazilian splashes and soft-rock strains. Pure timeless psychedelic pop perfection, awash in serenity and haunting reverie floating in the ether above airy soundscapes that convey a sophistication that belies the artists' tender age: 15 and 18. Released in 1981, Long Vacation is regarded as one of the best works of Japanese music in the 20th century. NEW FROM : Ahn Chi-haeng is a legend in Korea’s old-school gayo scene. At 60, he released experimental Buddhist sutras with Hip-Hop beats and guitar parts, featuring vocals by 'The Siddharettes.' Originally for a small Buddhist audience, these rare CDs were rediscovered a decade later by younger listeners on social networks. Beatball selected 6 original sutras from the 2004 double CD edition, with Dave Cooley's mastering adding presence and liveliness to the beats. 🪷

Yukihiro Takahashi forever! ALFA/YEN was established by Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi within Alfa Records. For visionary Haruomi Hosono, it was a long-awaited label driven by producers and artists who, like Yukihiro Takahashi, aimed to have freedom to experiment in the studio. The label continued to release high-quality works not just by YMO and related artists but also unique artists such as Hajime Tachibana and Jun Togawa, and cutting-edge bands such as Testpattern and Interior. Unfortunately, the label ended in May 1985, but its success led to a later boom in indie labels, and it continues to have a profound impact on Japanese music. “Drip Dry Eyes” by Yukihiro Takahashi is featured on ALFA/YEN Records 1980-1987: Techno Pop and Other Electronic Adventures in Tokyo.
