Are you considering or signed up for summer day camp? Did you know the state does not regulate day camps at all? No requirements for background checks, CPR training, child safety assessments or emergency plans.

The state would start regulating day camps under proposed legislation, which would require camps to submit safety plans.

Child advocates are pressing the state to allocate $250 million to support the mental health of babies and toddlers. Most funds for mental health are dedicated to K-12 kids but littles need help too. Even though they can't express themselves in the same way little kids do experience trauma and stress. The money would help prevent those experiences or help treat the children who have had such experiences.

Child advocates are asking California for $250 million to support the mental health of children 5 and under.

A handful of more affluent districts in San Diego are refusing to offer Transitional Kindergarten because of how they are funded despite a state mandate. Others that are funded in the same way, through local property taxes versus the state funding formula, are creating programs to comply with the new mandate to offer TK to all 4-year-olds within the next few years. The roll-out begins in the fall.

The state mandates transitional kindergarten, but isn’t paying the tab for a small portion of wealthy school districts. Some are balking.

On Thursday, a legislative bill that would have mandated vaccines for all children was sidelined in Sacramento and state health officials decided to push the date of a student vaccine mandate to July of 2023. The FDA has yet to give the vaccine for kids under 16 full authorization and it has not approved a version for small children under 5. What now? The mandate bill may not be entirely dead so stay tuned in the coming months for updates.

The state won't require COVID vaccines for children this fall, and a bill to mandate kids vaccines without personal belief exemptions stalls.

California has an ambitious plan for expanding transitional kindergarten in public schools for all 4-year-olds but what if there are not enough teachers?

The California teacher shortage includes thousands to expand public school to all 4-year-olds. Preschools worry they’ll lose their staff.

After Friday all students in California can take off their masks when they go to school and that includes littles 2-5 years-old in child care and preschool. The state is still recommending they wear masks but experts say the mandate should continue a few more weeks or until they become eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine.

California will soon lift the mask mandate for children in schools and child care facilities, but experts say the move is premature.

California may go further than any other state if a slate of bills are approved that would mandate COVID-19 vaccine for all kids to attend childcare, preschool and k-12; mandate the vaccine for all employees and independent contractors; and allow 12-17 year-olds to get the vaccine without parental consent. In addition, legislators are looking to crack down on internet platforms and physicians for "misinformation" about the vaccine. Check it out.

A group of California legislators has crafted vaccine laws that would be the most aggressive state approach to vaccines in the nation.

More than half a million Californians on Medi-Cal pay premiums, most of them are children. Now, officials in Sacramento are looking to end those premiums.

Gov. Newsom's budget and a new bill would stop the state from charging more than 500k Californians monthly Medi-Cal premiums.

"California legislators are reigniting an ugly fight over child vaccination requirements with bills that would mandate COVID-19 vaccinations, eliminate the personal belief exemption for COVID-19 vaccines and allow some minors to get vaccinated without parental consent.

With an ever-changing pandemic, a new vaccine that isn’t completely preventing transmissions and parental reluctance, the stakes are even higher."

Lawmakers want to create stricter COVID vaccine mandates, especially for children. They anticipate an especially fierce fight.

“We know this wave is adding to the challenges,” said Elena Montoya of the Center for the Study of Child Care Employment at UC Berkeley. “COVID cases are increasing, staff (are) calling in sick, it’s getting more difficult for providers to keep their classrooms or their doors open and that has ramifications on the parents who rely on the care.”

California child care centers were already struggling with COVID prior to the omicron variant. Now a dire situation has gotten even worse.
