The Council of Wise of the Savannah Centre for Diplomacy and Democracy, an NGO, has urged the Inter- Party Advisory Council (IPAC), to abide by its codes during the forthcoming 2023 General Elections.

Chairperson of the council, retired Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, made the appeal when she led her colleagues on an advocacy visit/engagements with the leadership of IPAC, on Wednesday in Abuja.

Bulkachuwa also enjoined the leadership of IPAC to ensure that political parties discharge their responsibilities to their members in the country without recourse to violence.

” Let me on behalf of the council appeal to the leadership of IPAC to always abide by its Codes of Conduct and declared objectives.

”This is to ensure that our political parties discharge their responsibilities to their members and indeed the nation without recourse to violence.

” They should be encouraged to be guided by democratic principles such as: inclusive participation, equity and fairness in all their activities.

” We wish to advise that the leaderships should also take steps to compel their members and officials to fully comply with the electoral laws.

”They should also follow guidelines issued by the electoral umpire (INEC), to develop a culture of integrity and trust.

” It is also the responsibility of the Advisory Council to ensure that the political campaigns by political parties are devoid of rancor, hate speech, inflammatory and unguided utterances capable of instigating violence,” she said.

The former President of the Court of Appeal stated that Nigeria deserves peaceful transparent 2023 elections, adding that for Nigeria to develop, there must be stable good governance.

” The council wishes to remind the IPAC leadership that for Nigeria to develop, there must be stable good governance, which could best be put in place through free and transparent elections.

” The council believes that the ability of Nigerians to once more prove the prophets of doom and our detractors wrong largely depends on the conduct of the parties during the forthcoming 2003 elections:

” They owe it a duty to the Nigerian people to improve upon and consolidate the democratic successes so far achieved in Nigeria,” she said.

Bulkachuwa assured that the council would continue to remind stakeholders to always listen to their own wise counsel before they act.

According to her, the council played a very important role in ensuring a free, fair and violence-free election in 2015 through its numerous engagements with many stakeholders.

Earlier, the Executive Director, Savannah Centre, Amb. Sani Bala, explained that the council of wise which comprise of credible and reputable Nigerians is a platform for early detection and deliberations of major issues around around the general elections.

Responding, the IPAC National Chairman, Mr Yabagi Sani, commended the efforts of the council towards ensuring violence-free, fair and credible 2023 General Elections.

He said; ” Our meeting with the council was very informative and highly educative in the sense that we learn a lot.

”It has further confirmed the need for Nigeria to have credible and transparent elections.

” We will take the message of the council of wise to other political parties and we will deepen interaction and interface with the council in order to benefits from the fountain of knowledge.” (NAN) (www.nannews.n)

Avoid Destructive Juicy Gifts, CJN Warns Justices of The Court of Appeal

The Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad has warned the new Court of Appeal Justices to do everything humanly possible to avoid accepting juicy but destructive gifts that may land them in trouble and end their career in the discharge of their judicial functions.

The CJN said that their reputation matters much and count enormously in their raise to honor and fame in life and must be well protected.

Justice Muhammad, who issued this warning on Monday 28th June, 2021 while swearing-in 18 Appellate Court Justices at the Supreme Court, informed them that several high profile cases would come their way in company of some juicy and irresistible temptations; warning them to avoid such temptations in their own interest.

“Let me point out unambiguously that in life, gifts and wealth that are not worked for, which are by extension undeserving are always wrapped in calamity and destruction”

“Flee from them and keep your heads high above the murky waters of corruption so that you can be conveniently counted among the very best in the Nigeria judiciary”

“You must against all odds, conduct your affairs within the ambit of the law and the oath that has just been administered on you.”

“If you are hitherto 50 percent under public scrutiny, I can assure you now that it has risen to 100 percent by virtue of your elevation"

“The tempo at which the public will assess your conduct and disposition will assume astronomical rise. You must therefore, redouble your efforts and dialogue properly with your conscience so as not to fall out of the grace of God and the Nigerian people" the big brother admonished.

The CJN also reminded the new Justices that it takes nothing to join the crowd but it takes a lot to stand alone with good conscience.

Justice Muhammad charged them to fasten their belts and roll up their sleeves to face the challenges head-on adding “you must redouble your pace to catch up with the expectation of the litigants"

While congratulating them on their elevation, the CJN further reminded them that as judicial officers, they have a divine mandate on earth that they must discharge with honesty and sincerity because they will give account of themselves to justify their elevation to the Court of Appeal.

With the coming on board of these 18 vibrant Jurists, it brings to 88 the number of Justices of the Court of Appeal.

The ceremony was attended by 3 serving governors, Plateau, Yobe and Ondo, former Bayelsa governor and now senator Serike Dickson, former Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Justices.

Meanwhile the 2 months strike embarked upon by the Judiciary Staff Union on the 6th of April, 2021 has been suspended after a meeting of the National body which took place in Abuja. Therefore, workers are to resume work on Monday next week.
Vox-pop:
1. is the strike really worth it?
2. Has the strike achieved what it set out to achieve? These are some of the questions being asked in some social media platforms.
