“I didn’t write a setlist” and “I don’t usually play this long as an opening act” are paraphrases, directly from the stage during Adeem’s 23 song, almost two-hour set to an enthusiastic core of their fans and a few gawkers at Duke’s H***y Tonk on the south-side of Indianapolis on Saturday, June 24th.

This means they took lots of requests and played them all and interspersed countless covers, including an early-set magical mashup up of Tom Petty, Train, Ray LaMontagne, and R Kelly. The snippet of Jason Isbell’s 24 Frames remained in Fervent For The Hunger, so not just a one-off when opening the Weathervanes tour with a one-hour scorcher to lay kindling at the fireplace of an Isbell face-melter.

Another Petty cover found its way into the later set, not to mention a Deana Carter track from the 90s and an encore of “This Year” by the Mountain Goats, Adeem’s all-time favorite band. They also mentioned during another Mountain Goats aside earlier in the set, that they believe that John Darnielle may be part of a Godhead with Dale Earnhardt, or some such thing, as wild theological ramblings, mixed with crude religious humor, as a kind of kinky apostolic standup comedy for the deconstructed and church-hurt but still cosmically loving, mingles between songs.

When we pulled into the venue parking lot, my forever concert date was like “this is a h***y tonk?” Are we safe here? Is Adeem? Just being honest, y'all.

But we were relieved to find the venue packed with Adeem’s people. Some gawkers and probably Duke’s regulars in a lot of hat and even more boots, well, they rambled in late and left early, but even though they had no idea what hit them, one extra-straight couple did slow-dance during “For Judas.” I did not download my lyrical exegesis of that song to them afterwards.

We added this show, my tenth time seeing Adeem since February 2022, when we were in town for another band the night before. And I am so so glad we did. It was the longest, wildest Adeem set I’ve seen yet, and we loved every minute of it.

Thank you souch to Sawmill Poetry Series for this description of July 10 at Plenty on Broad in Cookeville:

July's Sawmill Poetry Series feature is none other than Andrew William Smith (also known as Sunfrog) and his new book, Broken Megaphones: Christ-Haunted Poems About Loving & Losing Religion. Sawmill Poetry Series is excited to celebrate this new collection, and we're not alone. Rick Quinn, writer at PopMatters and Ordinary Space, says: “I don’t know many poets and mystics, but Andrew William Smith is the genuine article... Broken Megaphones is witness and testimony, fire and love. It is a gift. Take. Read. Receive.”

Andrew/Sunfrog (he/him) has been spitting & scribbling poetry (under a variety of names!) since the late 1980s, when he was rooted in the urban wilds of Detroit, Michigan. A poet living in Tenasi since the mid-90s, for always, Sunfrog’s poems have invoked the Beat-hippy chant & rant tradition, where they exist at the intersections of radical nonviolent activism, spirited disorganized religion, & the chaotic joy of living with neurodivergence & practicing recovery from addiction.

Smith will read followed by our usual (actually, it's pretty exceptional!) community open mic, which this month will be hosted by Martha Highers, editor of Under the Sun and a friend of the series. All in our community are welcome to listen as well as share their work, just arrive by 6:45 p.m. to reserve time. Regular host, Erin Hoover, will return in August.
