A reliable recall can be achieved in many ways, and I am by no means a professional trainer so please only take this video as a demonstration of our experience and not as professional advice.
REWARD FOR CHECK-INS.
We started Thor with recall training the moment we got him at 9 weeks. He got a reward inside the house at the mention of his name, then slowly worked up to a reward on our cue word which is, 'Come.' We practiced inside, in the garden and on our on-lead walks.
We took Thor's breakfast in a pouch while walking from day one - he got a reward for looking at us, stopping when we stopped, responding to commands etc. This started on a short, controllable lead, then onto extension and then long-line.
He'd get a verbal praise and food for looking at other dogs then back at us, other people and back at us, ANYTHING. As soon as he broke focus on anything then looked at us, food. By doing so, this created an increased reward center around us - we were infinitely more exciting than anything else.
He was on an extension lead or long-line for a WHILE, and only at 7/8 months was he reliably off lead where we were ALONE, and now at 11 months allowed off lead in parks and with distractions. There is no set timeframe - you work to your dog's ability, and that sometimes means taking a step backwards if things are regressing. Training is not linear. At 6 months, when teenage stage hit, Thor regressed and we took it back to basics.
To this day, he's NOT off lead with anyone but us as we have not safely confirmed he can be - this is our responsibility to do so before dog sitters, or family members allow him off lead.
You can start anywhere, but start with Check-Ins - it's so easy and all your dog has to do is look at you. 🤍
*This was filmed on one of our daily walks. Thor checks in regularly and is free to sniff and run as he pleases, but generally likes to stay close by as a result of the training and is never far from food 😉*

Harness is on the heavier side which works great for pullers - combined with a front clip is just great. The quality of these products is second to none - you can really feel the difference in @btacticaluk products to some other tactical ranges.
The sizing is potentially a little bit difficult to get right on the harness - we are what seems to be between Large and XLarge. SIZE UP if in doubt!
Tactical ranges are our preferred option- the handle is perfect for emergency situations or just extra added confidence when needed. If you're looking for a tactical range, I strongly recommend @btacticaluk.
We'd love to see some bright colours added to the tactical range too, neons are always popular for summer 👀👀
