The Great American Songbook - Sung by Great American Singers Getting Ready For a New Season This Fall The goal of the show is to take the listeners back to another time when things were simpler including popular music.

“The Great American Songbook is a nebulously-defined construct that seeks to represent the best American songs of the 20th century principally from Broadway theatre, musical theatre, and Hollywood musicals, from the 1920s to 1960, including dozens of songs of enduring popularity. The Great American Songbook became (and remains) a vital part of the repertoire of jazz musicians, who describe such so

ngs simply as “jazz standards’” (Wikipedia). It was a time when the songwriter, singer, and song all shared equal popularity amongst their listeners. People would not just turn their dials up for their favorite singers, but their favorite tunes no matter which popular artists was performing them. I hope to convey this by emphasizing the most popular songs of the time and the different voices that shared them with America. Songs by Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Rogers and Hart, Jerome Kern, Duke Ellington and many more will be featured throughout the semester.
