Carlow County Council – Local Enterprise Office Encourages Business Owners to Make New Year's Resolutions for a Successful 2024
As the year 2023 comes to a close, Kieran Comerford, Head of Economic Development & Enterprise, and the team at the Local Enterprise Office in Carlow County Council are urging business owners and entrepreneurs to set ambitious New Year's resolutions aimed at enhancing their business strategies, fostering growth, and achieving unprecedented success in the upcoming year.

Speaking about 2023, Kieran said, “This year we have had over 300 people coming in to discuss starting and developing their own business, and thousands of individuals engaging in mentoring, training, and events, coordinated by the Local Enterprise Office. With a commitment to supporting the business community, the team at the Local Enterprise Office recognises the importance of reflection and planning to ensure sustainable growth and prosperity. The New Year provides an excellent opportunity for business leaders to assess their current standing, identify areas for improvement, and set actionable goals that will propel their enterprises to new heights.”
The advisory team in the Local Enterprise Office were asked to share their focus for owner-managers to consider during 2024.

Séamus Doran, Assistant Head of Economic Development & Enterprise, who looks after development programmes and companies and oversees the Local Enterprise Office services, encourages companies to focus on innovation in 2023. Séamus advised businesses to “stay ahead of the curve by adopting new technologies and innovative solutions that can streamline operations, improve efficiency, and enhance customer experiences.” He continued “At the Local Enterprise Office, we have a series of competitiveness and innovation supports, which includes Lean for Business, Green for Business, and Digital for Business, and I’d encourage owner-managers to invest time in innovation in their business in 2024.”

"Building your professional network is a key message," from Melissa Doyle, Business Advisor with the Local Enterprise Office who looks after the PoPowerhouse - Women in Business Network - Carlow Start Your Own Business Programmes, and short programmes for the LEO. Melissa says, “Prioritise the growth and development of your team members through training programs, workshops, and skill-building initiatives. A knowledgeable and skilled workforce is key to business success.” She continued to say “Identify and forge collaborations with other businesses or organisations that align with your mission and values. Strategic partnerships can open new opportunities and broaden your reach.”

"Focus on Green” is the recommendation from Sarah Byrne, Business Advisor with the Local Enterprise Office. “It's important to recognise that all elements of society are on a journey to reduce our carbon footprint, and in 2024, we will see further companies embrace eco-friendly practices to build a sustainable future together. It's not just good for the planet; it's good for business. Let's make every choice count – for a greener today and a thriving tomorrow."

Linda Culleton, Economic Development Officer, encourages people in Tourism and Hospitality to work together to support Festivals and Events in 2024. Linda says “Festivals and events play a pivotal role in nurturing the tourism economy in County Carlow, serving as catalysts for community vibrancy and economic growth. In 2024 we will see the return of ‘ PaPan Celtic International Festival and with events like this attracting visitors, fostering local talent, and showcasing the unique cultural heritage of Carlow, these gatherings not only celebrate our roots but also inject vital income into local businesses. In 2024 let's recognise and support the power of festivals to sustain and invigorate County Carlow as a place to do business, turning moments of celebration into enduring pillars of prosperity for our cherished communities.

EU Project Coordinator with the Local Enterprise Office, Stacey Phelan, says companies should build international connections. “Early in 2024, we have two events under the EnEnterprise Europe Networkfor the food sector and for the engineering and construction sector. At these events, you will hear about how international connections can help scale your business and also about the support from ‘Europe Inc’. in this journey.”

Closing the comments, Cllr. Andrea Dalton Cathaoirleach of Carlow County Council said, “Our message for 2024 is clear - we are here to support all aspects of our business community.” Cllr. Dalton continued to say, “As we navigate the business landscape of 2024, we face a dynamic range of challenges that demand resilience, innovation, and adaptability. From global economic shifts to evolving consumer expectations, the path forward requires a keen understanding of emerging trends, a commitment to technological agility, and a proactive approach to sustainability. In this ever-changing environment, businesses must embrace transformation, harness the power of digitalisation, and foster a culture of continuous learning to not only overcome challenges but to thrive in the face of uncertainty. Our message is we are here to help you on this journey so let's turn these hurdles into stepping stones towards a more robust and sustainable future for our enterprises in 2024 and beyond.”

CHAS Talk by Nial O'Neill on the Ballymoon Castle Research Project in Leighlinbridge Community Centre, 8pm Weds 18 October.

Ballymoon Castle has long been viewed as unique among Irish castles. Its location, layout, and features do not appear to be suited to the times in which it was built. Who built it and why is unknown. Whether it was finished or not remains a discussion point.

The view of it being unfinished is very misleading in how we interpret the castle over time, the part it played in the Liberty of Carlow and beyond, and its influence on the lives of those in the region around it. Moreover, this view stifles research into the actual story of Ballymoon Castle.

We need to strongly reconsider seeing Ballymoon as a large unfinished masonry castle sitting idly in an isolated farmland setting. Instead, it was a valuable and important resource utilized for 300 or more years following its construction.

The Ballymoon Castle Research Project was set up to try to fill in some of our knowledge gaps. To this end, it is recognized that the castle itself has been thoroughly interpreted by several of the eminent experts on medieval castles in Ireland. Instead, the immediate surroundings of the castle may offer us more information. Recently, two geophysical surveys were conducted around the castle. The results of these show that the castle was the focus of at least two phases of activity.

Nial O’Neill is a graduate of a BA in Archaeology at NUI Galway. Nial has worked professionally in archaeology for 20 years and has conducted many archaeological excavations throughout Ireland. Nial is a committee member of the Carlow Archaeological and Historical Society and worked with Pat O’Neill and Deirdre Kearney on the Ballon Hill Archaeology Project. Ballymoon Castle has been Nial’s research focus since 2018.

Nial's talk on Ballymoon takes place on Weds 18 October 20223 in Leighlinbridge Community Centre.

Admission is free and all are welcome
