I started working with RedPotion.Studios about mid 2023. I initially hired them to produce our Murder Face comic and then eventually hired them to work on 3 separate comics.

They are a team of 3 artists and two colorists (one artist brought on specifically for Hourglass.)

It’s scary trying to find an artist/team that isn’t a scam or produces lower quality work than advertised. I got really lucky with Red Potion who works with me through the entire process to make sure we’re putting out a quality comic.

What is Hourglass Comix?

Last year Greg Pauley and I began exploring new creative avenues to raise awareness of our film company Blood Gate Films. This ended in the decision to do a Murder Face comic with the intention of selling enough comics to prove to funders it will be a lucrative franchise.

I wrote comics in the past but had never really followed through with the production of one because it costs A LOT of money to hire an art team. It was also instantly clear that writing a comic is way more involved than writing a screenplay. Did you know the comic writer decides how many comic panels go on a page? I didn’t. That was a level of nuance I hadn’t anticipated, but I hunkered down and spent a few months researching, learning, and writing.

Through the process of scripting the Murder Face comic I realized that it had reinvigorated my love of writing. Learning the proper way to write a comic made me realize how much the medium has to offer in regard to storytelling.

I began brainstorming more of my ideas that could be adapted to a comic format. I have so many quirky and weird ideas that would be fun stories to tell but would never find film funding. Then the idea of an ongoing series struck and it struck fast! My first release will be Zahra and Gene: Occult Investigations and within the span of a month I’ve mapped out the first few years of stories. I’ve gotten quite a few pages back from the art team I’m working with and I am so proud of this book.

It soon became clear that this endeavor was bigger than Blood Gate and that there were elements that didn’t align with the Blood Gate brand. The comics were becoming an altogether different beast and needed their own label.

This is where Hourglass Comix was born. An imprint that would let me publish stories outside the realm of strict horror. The hourglass represents time and it was about time I got my stories out to an audience. Over the years I’ve been compiling these little grains of ideas that I looked at as a waste of time. Not worth pursuing because it didn’t fit within the brand we were cultivating. So, I took all those grains of idea, poured them in an hourglass, and flipped it upside down. These ideas now have a home, I now have time, and Hourglass and was born.

Having Hourglass as a publishing company will allow me the freedom to produce any stories I want. The brand is a mixed bag. What does this mean for Murder Face? Well, the first issue should be out by October. Due to a licensing deal we wrote up between Hourglass and Blood Gate I’ll be able to offer our supporters the best of both worlds. Authentic Blood Gate stories created and released through Hour Glass Comix.

We’re in a day and age that offers a myriad of distribution options for selling comics and with Marvel/DC fatigue there is a lot of room for independent titles. There are a lot of publishers looking for the next big thing and more importantly that next big paycheck. After reviewing options I’m going fully independent and self-publishing. This means a long hard road of self promotion and crowdfunding with a mixed cocktail of blood, sweat, and tears.

The game plan as of right now is two-fold: I’m posting the comic bi-weekly at HourglassComix.com for free and I’ll be starting a Patreon to foster a community of subscribers. As the amount of subscribers grows so will the amount of content I’m able to publish.

It’s going to be a rollercoaster and I’ve got so much planned for this imprint. I’m excited to unveil the beginning of the project on April 1st and I am once again asking you to go on a creative journey with me.
