It's go time!! Let's fire up the Woodland Mill and get these Logs processed! I have 8 left and I'm finally going to be able to reclaim my hay equipments parking spot in the covered lean-to. Some of these slabs are absolutely gorgeous and will make some awesome benches and tables..

The new brush hog lades work great! I will be keeping the old one and try and work on them over the winter, they were relatively inexpensive, it's nice to have a spare.

I find the best way to clear large over grown weeds is with a brush cutting blade. It actually reduces that amount of stuff that will go flying at you significantly. I can even trim grass with it, it's great for going along the pasture fence lines

I was struggling to keep our little fast set pool clear and I kept buying packs of ridiculously over priced paper filters so I decided to get a small all in one Sand Filter, this thing is a 1/3 Hp and holds 18kgs of sand. I am extremely happy with it, the backwash and rinse works great the pool flows so much better now and it's so much easier to keep clean

Here are some of the chicks we hatched out recently, most of these are mixes, the black one is a mix of Appenzeller and Ayam Cemani. Can wait to see what they look like when they are bigger

We recently received a nice weather station from so far I'm pretty impressed with it. It's pretty accurate and the kids love checking how much rain has fallen. Super easy to setup and use.

This is the Roof of my Garage, it needs some love.
How would you tackle this? The Rust is not loose and the metal is solid
Would you seal it, Prime it then paint?
OR do i just try and spray it with Tremclad flat black rust paint and hope for the best?

A predator struck very early this morning, the dogs were in the garage, Go figure. It got more chickens then I thought, I ended up finding 3 of them laying around different feilds, but the rest are completely gone. I think the days of letting them free range is over for now.

Hatching Chickens and Guineas has become almost like an addictions, I love seeing what the mixes will look like. I want to get more pure breeds so I can experiment mixing them, I really want a Guicken lol

15/07/2024

I love my Guinea Hens! We hatched some out and they have interesting features from our existing Guineas. We have full White one, half white and grey and all grey. I normally have a hard time hatching these but this batch was easier then usual.

Some of our recent hatchling have some interesting features.

I need to process these Ash logs I have sitting in my lean-to, I need the space for my hay making equipment. I love using this Woodland mill HM126 but I can't wait to be milling something other then Ash. Some Cedar or Pine would be a nice change.

Well I got the Baler working, managed to make a few bales with it but I needed to add bearing caps to the feeders first. Was a fairly simple fix, I love how everything seems to be straightforward, I love mechanical stuff, you can see what's wrong and fix it.

Replying to well here is a pool heater update, it sunny enough today to let it run and show you how much heat it makes. The key is to slow the water and absorb as much heat as possible. Sorry about the audio not sure why it's got static.

28/06/2024

Replying to absolutely here's a Greenhouse tour, we've got cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, strawberry, and a bunch of house plants in there growing nicely, it's one of my favorite places to spend time on the farm

21/06/2024

Replying to I mean my page name is Modern Homestead lol I'm pretty sure I've never made it a secret I'm on grid, I mean just look at the rest of my videos. The end goal is to be completely off grid in 10 years in the mean time we strive to be as self sufficient as possible in anyway we can.

I made a DIY Solar Pool heater to replace my propane heater, I've been running it for 2 weeks now and it's working great, if it's sunny it constantly feeds the pool warmer water so it continuesly warms.

18/06/2024

We planted the garden last week, it's our first year using this fabric, we will see how it goes, hoping it keeps the weeds down, they always get out of control by the end of the summer. It feels good to get this done. Using a torch is the best way to cut this stuff

17/06/2024

I've got a brand new freshly released Argus Pro 4K Pro, This thing boasts 180deg feild of view in full 4K day and night! It's battery powered and recharged with solar power. I'm totaly impressed with this Camera and it will be great to keep an eye on the animals and property

16/06/2024

Replying to yes I feed them grower/finisher feed on top of all the grass they eat, they are ravenous, they will eat everything! And charge you for food at feeding,

What better time to try it out then now! I have everything needed already. Seems pretty simple, bucket with feed, cover with 2inch of water and let sit at room temp for 4 days, stir and add water as needed. If I did something wrong please correct me!

12/06/2024

One of my absolute favorite things I've built on the homestead is the cabin! I need to find more time to spend here. The plan is to build a few more of these and rent them out,

12/06/2024

You know you want chickens! Just do it! Just beware there is no such thing a just a few chickens.

Couldn't resit using this sound, it's pretty much summing up our lives right now, small circles, family, memories. Once you simplify you realize alot of thing we stress about don't matter in the end. Hope you all have a great day!

09/06/2024

we try to minimize the impact of predators on the homestead with a few lines of defense. We've got the dogs, then the electric netting, the tractor itself and really loud guineas. Even with all that sometimes things happen,
