In 1968, Jimmy Page was looking for new members for his band, the Yardbirds, which he had joined in 1966. He first saw Robert Plant singing with his band, Hobbstweedle, at a college in Birmingham. Impressed by Plant's voice, Page thought it was too great to have gone undiscovered and wondered if Plant was difficult to work with. The meeting was arranged by Terry Reid, lead singer of Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers. Reid, who had commitments with the Rolling Stones and declined offers to join both Page's new project and Deep Purple, recommended Plant instead. Page then chose Plant as the vocalist for his new band, which he initially named The New Yardbirds. Reid also suggested Plant's drummer, John Bonham. This lineup, with Yardbirds bassist Chris Dreja, eventually evolved into Led Zeppelin.

OTD in ‘66, ‘Eleanor Rigby’ was recorded.

The song was a shock to many pop listeners in 1966, with its bleak message of depression and desolation, with a somber, funeral-like backing.

“The first few bars just came to me,” said Paul.

"Daisy Hawkins picks up the rice in the church where a wedding has been."

According to Paul, Daisy Hawkins was an older woman who he got to know very well. He would go shopping for her and sit in her kitchen listening to stories and her crystal radio set.

"Just hearing her stories enriched my soul and influenced the songs I would later write."

Paul explained that her name did not work in the lyrics.

“Then the name "Father McCartney" came to me – and "all the lonely people". But I thought people would think it was supposed to be my dad, sitting knitting his socks. Dad's a happy lad. So I went through the telephone book and I got the name McKenzie.”

Paul said he made up the name “Eleanor Rigby” because he liked it but it was pointed out that the graveyard at St. Peter’s Church in Liverpool where John and Paul first met has a gravestone with the name “Eleanor Rigby.” Paul admits he may have been subconsciously influenced by the gravestone.

None of the Beatles played instruments on the song, although John and George did contribute harmony vocals with Paul’s lead vocals.

Instead, the song employs a classical string ensemble – an octet of studio musicians, comprising four violins, two violas and two cellos, all performing a score composed by George Martin.

t’s no surprise that artificial intelligence is just about all anyone is talking about, and SoundExchange is doing its part to make sure that the rights of creators are at the center of conversations lawmakers are having about AI.
That’s why SoundExchange is proud to support a new bipartisan bill that was introduced this month in the House of Representatives. The No AI Fake Replicas and Unauthorized Duplications Act of 2023 (No AI FRAUD Act) will establish safeguards to protect against generative AI abuses creating non-consensual deepfakes and voice clones.
“The music industry is the tip of the spear in the fight against unauthorized generative AI,” said Michael Huppe, President and CEO of SoundExchange. “Every day, music artists are being exploited as their creative works are harvested, manipulated, and repackaged without consent, credit, or compensation. The No AI FRAUD Act will create a federal property right for likeness and voice while providing real penalties for companies and individuals who attempt to steal and profit off the intellectual property of music creators.”
We encourage all creators to contact their legislators in support of this bill. The Human Artistry CampAIgn, of which SoundExchange is a founding member, has a website where it’s easy to send an email to your officials with one click. Click here for more details and to take action!
Also on the AI front, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee introduced the Ensuring Likeness Voice and Image Security (ELVIS) Act this month, to update Tennessee’s Protection of Personal Rights law and reaffirm the state’s preservation of individual voice, image, and likeness as irresponsible and unethical AI develops in the form of deepfakes and voice cloning.
“Evolving laws to keep pace with technology is essential to protecting the creative community,” said Huppe. “As we embrace the enormous potential of artificial intelligence, Tennessee is working to ensure that music and those who make it are protected under the law from exploitation without consent, credit, and compensation. We applaud the cradle of country music and the birthplace of rock n’ roll for leading the way.” Elevate your voice in support of the American Music Fairness Act and help secure compensation for artists on AM/FM radio!
