Thirty-five students of Sablayan National Comprehensive High School have been qualified and secured the spots from different international prestigious competitions organized by Math Olympiads Training League Inc. (MOTLI), where they represented the district of Sablayan, division of Occidental Mindoro, showcasing their mathematical skills in solving complex porblems.
SabNaHis’ winning streak in international competitions such as World Internatinal Math Olympiad (WIMO) and Philippine International Math Olympiad (PhIMO) continued this school year.
The finals of the Philippine International Math Olympiad (PhIMO) were held in Davao City, Philippines from September 22nd to 25th, 2023, where the participants demonstrated great skills and perseverance, with nineteen students from various year levels. They were able to sn**ch 2 silver medals, 11 bronze medals and 6 merit certificates.
Akhira S. Manlangit, one of the outstanding students in PhIMO, discussed the problems they encountered before competitions, where they struggled financially, and mentally when it came to solving the given advanced mathematics questions.
Manlangit added that, learning math is hard for most people not until you finally learn how to love it, the problem is not being able to understand and solve the question but being lazy and lack of interest to understand and solve it, joining such competitions like this may be financially draining, therefore it can also be mind-blowing and it can widen your knowledge too.
“Ang masasabi ko lang is grab the opportunity. Don’t stay in your comfort zone, there’s more out there that you can learn, especially in Mathematics.” Manlangit said.
The World International Math Olympiad (WIMO) was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from January 5th to 8th, 2024 where three students were qualified to join and brought home three merit awards from the said competition.
Mart Clyde A. Tadeo, one of the WIMO finalist, expressed their sentiments of anxiety and fear, they also showed a strong sense of pride and excitement at representing SabNaHis, while being concerned about going home empty-handed and not being able to repay the parents, teachers and coaches for their hard work and expenses.
Tadeo said that Mathematics had a significant influence on their high school experience because it not only helped them learn more but also helped them achieve recognition in SabNaHis and throughout the province of Occidental Mindoro, which opened up a lot of opportunities for their senior high school journey.
“Sa tingin ng iba, nakakatakot mag aral ng math. Magiging advice ko lang is conquer your fears para makakuha ng lakas to achieve a medal. Enjoy lang sa pagrereview, mas masaya ‘to pag may makikilalang kang bagong mga kaibigan, hindi lang sa SabNaHis, pati narin sa ibang lugar. Ayun, galinagan n’yo, go for the gold future SabNaHis Mathletes,” said Tadeo.
According to John Rey G. Inmenzo, Master Teacher I in the Math Department and one of the outstanding coaches during PhIMO competition, stated that, he’s happy and excited as they were able to compete in the World International Math Olympiad in Malaysia.
“H’wag matatakot sumubok when it comes to international large-scale assessment. Dito rin kasi mapapalawak basic math knowledge,”Inmenzo stated.
