May masasabi pa bang “Malaya pa tayo”?

Ayon sa akdang “Philippine Independence Day?

SG, LSC, Org volunteers organize freshmen slot reservation

To facilitate the selection of programs for the future BulSUans, the College of Education (CoEd) ensured smooth organization through the hands-on assistance provided by the student body and volunteers during the slot reservation process of the CoEd qualifiers, Bulacan State University (BulSU) E-Library, June 8.

CoEd Governor Sunshine Banting expressed fulfillment and appreciation to all the LSC staff and volunteers for participating in meetings and arriving early at the venue.

“Nakikita ko naman na continuous ‘yong process na nangyayari, from first floor [to] second floor; from process to process, and I can assure na nagiging maayos and naki-cater naman lahat ng concerns, na ‘pag hindi nila (pertaining to staff and volunteers) alam ang isasagot (to the concerns of incoming BulSUans) [...] ay ibinababa rin sa LSC,” Banting said.

Incoming BulSUans also conveyed satisfaction with the service provided by their seniors.

“Organized po kasi lahat and may mga student [or] staff na po agad sa bawat sulok na nag-approach sa amin. Very approachable din po lahat and talagang [na-feel] ko, namin, ‘yong warm welcome po ng BulSU,” according to Ailey Gwen Gregorio, an incoming first year.

As future education students from various programs — Bachelor of Early Childhood Education (BECED), Bachelor of Elementary Education (BEED), Bachelor of Secondary Education (BSED), Bachelor of Technology and Livelihood Education (BTLED), and Bachelor of Physical Education (BPED) received a warm welcome from the Student Government (SG), Local Student Council (LSC) of CoEd, and different major-based organizations; it marked the beginning of their journey within BulSU community. | Elias Antonio Cariño and Ryza Apatay/The Mentors’ Journal

Ganancial promotes EduKalikasan, crowns Reyna ng Karunungan 2024

Carrying her mission to promote environmental literacy among future educators, Anna Luisa Ganancial from the Association of Science Majors (ASM) reigned as the Reyna ng Karunungan 2024, BulSU E-Library, Function Hall, May 29.

Through EduKalikasan with the support of the ASM organization, she has already contributed to projects like plant boxes and green project initiatives, yet she plans to intensify these efforts, emphasizing the importance of nature conservation.

“Ang plano ko is hindi lamang magsalita, kasi naniniwala ako na hindi sapat na mayroon ka lamang adbokasiya, mayroon ka lang na mga salita, kung hindi natin pamamarisan ng kilos-paggawa ay wala rin naman mararating ang mga adbokasiya natin, so ang plano ko is walk the talk,” Ganancial expressed, embracing the symbol of wisdom.

Reflecting on her growth throughout the journey, she noted significant personal and civic development as she has become more mature, empathetic, and committed to social issues, particularly those affecting the LGBTQIA+ community.

During the competition in the Show-and-Tell, she addressed a banner advocating for LGBTQ rights, highlighting frequent instances of violence and disrespect towards community members, even within the university where some professors fail to acknowledge self-identifications.

Ganancial also addressed the use of artificial intelligence in education, advocating for authenticity and original work among students.

Her late mother’s encouragement played a big role in her perseverance as she recalled her mother's last words that fueled her determination during the Q&A and Show-and-Tell segments of the competition.

In an interview, she discussed her eagerness to wait in the CoEd Day, anticipating another opportunity to show her abilities in the Reyna ng Karunungan pageant as she overcame her defeat to secure the crown in the Lakambini ng Karapatan 2023.

Despite facing anonymous criticism and accusations of favoritism due to her colleagues within the College of Education (CoEd) Local Student Council (LSC), she remained focused on her goal and preparation.

Being Reyna ng Karunungan, she also aspires to be a proactive leader and an advocate, amplifying the voices of her fellow scholars and leading by example.

| Ryza Apatay/The Mentors’ Journal

Acosta amplifies inclusive education among Indigenous, wins Hari ng Karunungan 2024

With the advocacy to combat misconceptions about Indigenous people through inclusive education, Reinne Clarence Acosta from the Kapisanan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Araling Panlipunan (KAPIMAPA) crowned as the Hari ng Karunungan 2024, held at BulSU E-Library, May 29.

He plans to collaborate with the College of Education (CoEd) Local Student Council (LSC) to expand programs like Project Educate and Adopt-a-Daycare Program.

He also expressed his desire to tap the BulSU Students’ Rights and Welfare (SRW) Committee to launch symposiums, seminars or public forums regarding Indigenous People’s Rights.

Moreover, Acosta’s winning answers during the competition reflected his commitment to address the educational challenges in the Philippines.

In the Show-and-Tell segment, he associated a photo depicting the Philippines' poor performance in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) with his past fondness for the color green, which has now been overshadowed due to Sara Duterte’s failure as the current Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary.

He also won the judges’ hearts when asked if he agrees that scholarships should also be given to privileged students; he reiterated the need for equity instead of equality.

Behind this success, he admitted feeling hesitant about joining the pageant because he didn't see himself conforming to conventional beauty standards. However, his classmates and the president of KAPIMAPA urged him to participate as he pushed beyond superficial appearances and conveyed his message and inspired others.

During their time in Porac, Pampanga as part of their advocacy where they taught Ayta students, he met a student who aspired to be a hero by becoming a teacher.

Minsan kasi we think that we are worthless, we are insignificant, we are diminutive due to the different reasons, pupuwede na [mayroong] doubts, uncertainties sa ating sarili but just stop yourself [dahil] you can become an inspiration to someone. | Ryza Apatay and Ana Marie Espiritu/The Mentors’ Journal

Students break records in Rubik’s Cube

Challengers from different organizations in the College of Education (CoEd) put their problem-solving skills to test during the Rubik's Cube Competition at DAGITAB 2024, Roxas Hall 408, May 29.

Three representatives from Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Filipino (SaMaFil), the Society of Mathematics Major for Education Students (SMMES), and the United Values Education Community (UniVedCom) took part in the event.

The game concluded as Shaina S.P. from SaMaFil swept the 1st place with an accumulated time record of 142.86 seconds, followed by Dan Loyd B. Paulino of SMMES who captured 2nd place with a time record of 169.72 seconds, and Jose Ivan J. Domingo of UniVedCom secured 3rd place with 172.78 seconds.

The event featured a 10-round showcase of flash hand movements and strong expertise of the Rubik's Cube, while the participants’ ranking was determined by their accumulated time across the 10 rounds.

CoEd chess players engage in battle of mind

Amidst the deafening silence, the movement of chess pieces could only be heard as the participants in the CoEd Chess Competition faced off in a battle of wits at Roxas Hall 408, Bulacan State University (BulSU), May 29.

Christian Emerenciana from ASM clinched the 1st Place in the 5-round chess event with a total of 4.5 points, outplaying Rani Elicas Pagadora of MMS, who secured 2nd place, followed by James Andrew of SOTLES, who claimed 3rd place.

Emerenciana seized this last opportunity to showcase his skills in playing chess, as he is a graduating student.

“Preparation is the key talaga. So, I think this is the last appearance within this year, kasi graduating ako, eh. So, I just did my best, and siguro ‘yung oras, talagang pinaghandaan ko, [kung] paano ma-maximize ‘yung oras. So, iyon, na-manage ko naman siya nang maayos, and siguro, ‘yung pagiging optimistic, isa na rin ‘yon sa naging malaking contribution,” he stated.

He also explained that he had been playing chess for 5 years and was grateful for the wisdom and strength that God gave him in order to finish the competition up to the end.

He recalled a challenging round in the competition wherein he competed with the player from MMS.

Despite the jitters and inconsistency in playing chess, Emerenciana still succeeded in being the winner of the competition.

A total of six different organizations, including the MAPEH Major Society (MMS), Kapisanan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Araling Panlipunan (KAPIMAPA), the Society of Elementary Education Students (SEEdS), the Society of Mathematics Major for Education Students (SMMES), the Association of Science Majors (ASM), and the Society of Technology and Livelihood Education Students (SOTLES), joined the said event. | Kyla Pangindian/The Mentor’s Journal

A. Caluag, Rod Kenneth R. Salamat, Marcus Dwayne A. Saguitan, at Whilem A. Sison.

| Eloisa Buenaventura/The Mentors’ Journal

Alab Indayog ignites passion and talent at BulSU

Vibrant energy from Dagitab 2024 ignited as the Alab Indayog dance competition took center stage during CoEd Day, facilitated by the College of Education (CoEd) Local Student Council (LSC) in collaboration with key student organizations at E-Library Function Hall, Bulacan State University (BulSU), May 29.

The 1st place was awarded to the Society of Mathematics Major for Education Students (SMMES), while the MAPEH Major Society (MMS) secured the 2nd place, and the Magistral Organization of Future English Mentors (MORFEME) won 3rd place.

Each group brought a contemporary flair to the stage with their high-energy routine set to P-Pop music, captivating the audience with their performances and creative costumes.

The MMS started the event with a hyped performance, donning street dance attire that matched their vigorous routine.

Following MMS, MORFEME took the stage in modern pop costumes, delivering an innovative performance that blended dance moves with P-pop beats.

Meanwhile, SMMES closed the competition with a well-choreographed routine, dressed in modern school uniform-style costumes reminiscent of K-pop, adding charm and synchronization to their performance.

After the individual performances, the three groups participated in a dance showdown, along with the students cheering.

With each movement and spirited performance, the Alab Indayog successfully showcased the artistry and dedication of the CoEd students. | Ryza Apatay/The Mentors’ Journal

| Eloisa Buenaventura/The Mentors’ Journal

CoEd students dominate Battle of the Brains

During the Battle of the Brains, College of Education (CoEd) students from various organizations were challenged to showcase not only their intellectual prowess but also their camaraderie at Roxas Hall, Room 411, Bulacan State University (BulSU), May 29.

In the afternoon, the recognition for the winners of the Battle of the Brains was held and announced on the 7th floor of BulSU E-Library.

Society of Mathematics Major for Education Students (SMMES) represented by John Andrew Benguet, Andrew Jovic Hayagan, Patrick Lei Tiongco, and Mark Joseph Lopez dominated the quiz bee and emerged as the champions.

Meanwhile, Cyfer Shaugn Guising, Bryan Joseph Colete, Rochelle Vecino, and Nathan Ramos from the Association of Science Majors (ASM) nabbed the 2nd place, while Maria Ana Garcia, Allen Glenn Atienza, Clarence Romance, and Jowen Cacas from the Kapisanan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Araling Panlipunan (KAPIMAPA) were able to secure the 3rd place.

The event was divided into three rounds, with each round consisting of 10 questions from the General Education (GenEd) and Professional Education (ProfEd) topics, with a time limit of 5 seconds for the first round, 10 seconds for the second round, and 12 seconds for the final round.

Patrick Lei Tiongco, one of the players of SMMES, admitted that they had limited time to prepare for the event as they also had to review their lessons a day before the said competition.

“Katatapos lang po talaga ng research and defense po namin bago ganapin ‘yung Battle of the Brains and may isang araw lang po kami na pahinga in which inilagay namin ‘yong araw na ‘yon sa pagpapahinga to make sure na ready kami lumaban. And then before the competition day, do’n lang po talaga kami nag-review and inalala po yung mga past lessons,” Tiongco stated.

Moreover, he elaborated on what factors he believes contributed to their victory, highlighting his colleagues who were already competing in various quiz bee and math competitions, their close bonds as classmates within the team, and their trust with each other.

“Actually, my teammates are part of every competition here in Bulacan. Lumalaban sila sa mga quiz bee and math competitions and ako, first time ko lang talaga lumaban sa ganitong klaseng competition, sabi ko nga sa sarili ko, ‘let this first time be the best one’ and at the end of the competition, it is literally a best one,” he added.

“Pumasok kami sa competition dala-dala ‘yung tiwala sa isa’t isa na makayanan namin, knowing na ‘yung iba naming kalaban is mga 4th Year, wherein alam naming competitive sila since yung naging quiz bee is ProfEd and GenEd but hindi ‘yun naging hindrance para sa amin na makamit namin ‘yung champion[ship] for our organization, SMMES.”

Despite the competitive nature of the contest, sportsmanship was still observed in the room, with every participant cheering for each other after every round. | Micco Jay Cortez/The Mentors’ Journal

CoEd students shine in Ani ng Sining

To channel their creativity through Ani ng Sining: Poster Making Contest, the participants capture the essence of “Buhay sa Lansangan ng Pilipinas” as part of the celebration of CoEd day: DAGITAB 2024 at Roxas Hall, Lobby 2, May 29.

“Alam din naman natin na it is another way to express themselves, to express ourselves. Gaya nga ng theme na ‘Buhay sa Lansangan ng Pilipinas’ gusto natin na ipakita kung ano nga ba ‘yung isa sa kasalukuyang nararanasan natin, and through this poster making, makikita ‘yung iba’t ibang issues,” stated by Nhetant Vincent San Jose, the committee head of the said event.

“Makikita natin na as future educator[s], mapapamulat natin sa mga future students natin ’yung iba’t ibang danas [na] maaari nilang maranasan sa buhay nila bilang isang Pilipino,” he added.

After the facilitator explained the theme and the guidelines of the said contest, the participants were given four hours to finish their pieces.

At the end, Jessie Gamboa from MAPEH Major Society (MMS) was hailed as the 1st placer, Charlie Estrella from Society of Elementary Education Students (SEEdS) was also triumphant as the 2nd placer and Zoila Sapungan from Samahan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Filipino (SAMAFIL) took the 3rd place.

Gamboa explained that the concept for his poster was rooted in the harsh realities of life on the streets in the Philippines, specifically the condition of street children, which profoundly moved him and fueled his creative process.

Meanwhile, it can be remembered that the date of CoEd day was moved due to the cancellation of face-to-face classes.

“Overall challenge na lang sa buong Dagitab is yung pabago-bagong schedule, dahil nga sa heat index, but still, hindi naman iyon naging balakid para hindi matuloy. And yesterday, I can say na naging smooth naman ’yung event namin, lalo't higit ang Poster Making Contest,” San Jose cited. | Ana Marie Espiritu/The Mentors’ Journal

Future educators unleash their wit in Scrabble Competition

Every word counts, as the Scrabble Competition kicked off during the CoEd day, with the participation of different organizations in the College, Roxas Hall 408, Bulacan State University (BulSU), May 29.

The event concluded as Chelsea Liatoro, a 3rd year student from KAPIMAPA, hailed as the 1st placer of the Scrabble Competition, while Czarinah Perez, representing MORFEME, secured the 2nd place, and Mark Joseph Jaranilla of SEEds clinched 3rd place.

Liatoro did not have any prior preparations for the said competition and only played scrabble as her pastime.

Despite her inexperience in joining scrabble competitions, it did not become a hindrance for her to be announced as the champion.

“Ano, dati kasi, nilalaban ako nu’ng high school ako. Spelling bee, gano’n,” Liatoro stated.

Still, she enjoyed the contest and went with the flow, not expecting to win since she would be competing with other players from CoEd.

The scrabble event had a total of 4 rounds, the last round being the determiner of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placers. In an unconventional twist, the three players decided to play all together instead of the traditional 1v1 format in Scrabble.

Representatives from the Kapisanan ng mga Mag-aaral sa Araling Panlipunan (KAPIMAPA), the Association of Early Childhood Education (AECES), MAPEH Major Society (MMS), the Society of Elementary Education Students (SEEdS), the Society of Mathematics Major for Education Students (SMMES), and the Magistral Organization of Future English Mentors (MORFEME) took part in the competition. | Kyla Pangindian/The Mentors’ Journal
