The Phonic Screwdriver

Possibly the only Regular FM Radio show dealing with
Dr Who and Science Fiction in the world! Presented by Lee Ra

wlings and Simon Brett
Show time and day: First Saturday of every month - 10pm

What type of music can we expect to hear on your show? Lee: There will be music with a Science fiction link but we love a good chat too. What is the format of your show? Lee: Science fiction with an upbeat, debate, music, discussion, nostalgia infusion. Why should we listen to your show? Lee: Not just because it is possibly the only one of it’s kind in existence but it is going to be fun to listen to if you love the world of Science Fiction, Telefantasy, cult T.V and Films and of course the main ingredient Doctor Who. Simon: Plus we're going to take full advantage of the show being live. There are podcasts aplenty on the web, but they don't have the option of instant interaction. Facebook and Twitter being obvious communication tools. How did your show come about? Lee: I have had an idea to do this for years but was waiting for the right nerd, er , I mean DJ to come along enter Simon…
Simon: Yes, I found Lee deep in the bowels of the Phoenix clutching a notebook made of gerbil skin and giggling to himself. When I eventually managed to force it from his grip I found it full of brilliant ideas for a show like this. I'd had the same idea - but admittedly only over the last couple of weeks. Lee: By the way you don’t have to be a huge big nerdy SF fan (like Simon) to listen to the show as it should be accessible to all ears even big pointy ones. Simon : No, anyone could listen and find something entertaining in there. worst case we could always get Lee to talk about his collection of Street Hawk finger puppets. What goes on behind the scenes in the studio? Lee: We play edible three dimensional chess with Venusian ludo counters whilst whistling the theme to the prisoner and drink lots of pan galacic gargle blasters.. What has been you best on air moment? Lee: My 25 hour non-stop radio show. Simon: When I was first contacted by a listener trying to find out more about a track that I'd played. SURELY the reason for doing all this! What has been your worst/ most embarrassing on air moment? Lee: When I open I mouth. Simon: Leaving the faders up when I was trying to clear my sinus passages. Thankfully I was playing a track by The Fall and no-one noticed. Who is your favourite artist? Lee: Munch - We all know The Scream is based on The Silence. Simon: Scifi related? Ooh, John Ridgway, Dave Gibbons, Mick Austin worked on what I call the classic era of the Doctor Who comic strip. What is your all time favourite album? Lee: From the Science fiction world? Dr Who and the Pescatons – audio tape. Scared the hell out of me as a nipper.Yes I am a nerd, ok. Happy now? Simon: At last! BBC Radiophonic Workshop Doctor Who Sound Effects. It's just been digitally remastered...Honest!!
