Remembering Paul William Walker IV who lost his life alongside his friend Roger Rodas, senselessly - 12 years ago today.

This post is not to rehash what he & his friend did or didn’t do; it IS in fact to remember Paul for the life he lived and the celebrate his giving heart.

Like many of you, I was taken aback not only by his easy good looks. What made Walker truly irresistible was his humanitarian efforts….The word “efforts”, should in fact be changed to “effort…LESS” - because in fact, he was much more at ease being in the role of philanthropist. Specifically, disaster relief in the nonprofit foundation he formed January 2010 in response to the 2010 Haiti earthquake. Aptly named Reach Out World Wide aka ROWW, alongside his friend and financial adviser Roger Rodas.

When Paul’s untimely death was announced on CNN, I really was stunned, now 12 years later, my thoughts have not changed. Instead of him doing more works for humanity and cherishing memories with his only child, Meadow, we’re left behind to only wonder…..what should have, what could have……Are you really sure it was him? Yes, f**k yes.

Here’s my second anniversary post which fell 33 years ago on 28 November 1992. Alice In Chains (11/28/92) headlined a concert in Montréal, Quebec. The performance was held at La Brique (𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘉𝘳𝘪𝘤𝘬, 𝘙𝘰𝘤𝘬 𝘉𝘢𝘳). Screaming Trees & Gruntruck opened.

I’m sharing a short clip from Montreal’s Musique Plus program of Layne singing a clip of “I Nearly Lost You “, filling in for Mark Lanegan. The 2nd part is covers the Alice In Chains portion of the night. Unfortunately, there’s no Gruntruck footage. The full 2 minutes of the video is published on several YouTube accounts.

Below is an excerpt from “The Charlatan” from Carleton University, in Ottawa, Ontario.

“Screaming Trees’ sound has become progressively heavier over the years and has a bluesy tinge reminiscent of ‘60s rock. You could drown and float away in Van Conner’s basslines, but feel like slamming in to the sweaty mass in the pit when Lee Conner laid out his infectious rifts. Unfortunately, their set was cut down to a scant five songs. An apologetic Lee explained singer Mark Lanegan was in the hospital, but they played a few songs any way. Lanegan’s grizzly voice was sadly missed, but Lee and Van did an admirable job trading vocal duties. Their charged version of “Nearly Lost You” with Layne Staley, vocalist for Alice in Chains, was a delinite highpoint.”

Two *Belated* Anniversary Posts I’m sharing (Friday was the actual anniversary date(s). This is the first.

The first one is from 35 years ago (November 28, 1990). Alice In Chains had the opening slot with Iggy Pop. The venue ~ Numbers in Houston, TX.

A few years ago I noticed that the setlist and concert sites are showing a different date for this specific venue. According to the tour promoters and its website, the date is correct of November 28. I also own this specific poster (1 of 3 from this tour). I’ve also included a concert ticket stub.

The photos have been circulated for many years; AiC hanging with Iggy, his bandmates.

On this day 33 years ago, Alice In Chains performed at “The Concert Hall” in Toronto, Ontario in Canada. Screaming Trees & Gruntruck opened (11/29/92).

All images are by Rod Orchard, his recollection regarding the incredible experience photographing the band.

He wrote:
“I was still at Ryerson University working for the school paper when they needed someone to shoot the Alice In Chains gig at the Concert hall. It was very last minute so I ended up going to the show with 100 speed film in my camera and no flash. From what I remember I shot from the crowd as they didn’t have barriers at gigs back then. I knocked off a few rolls and stayed for the show. Great set for a band I actually never heard of before. I was sure the shots would suck but to my surprise are some of the shots I’m most proud of to this day.” -Rod Orchard

I was trying to grab a decent screenshot from AiC’s “Again” for an article I’m working on. As I was scrubbing through a segment, I managed to stop on the perfect moment in the video.

Beautiful image of Layne, even if a screenshot.

Mike⭐️ Starr practicing in studio.

This photo popped up in my feed today. Therefore, I took it as a sign to share.

Any time images of Mike, Layne or better yet, Mike AND Layne pass by corneas, I instantly feel a happiness that surges all the warm fuzziness within.

While I think of what image to share of our LS/MS brothers tomorrow, I’ll also be thinking of this beautiful being. Remember Starr’s unique, ferocious playing style. No one will ever come close to the completely cool charisma he demanded on stage. Starr will ALWAYS be the “Minister of Heavy”.

Please forgive me for forgetting to share this review from Rolling Stone. On November 7, just 2 weeks ago, AiC celebrated the 30th anniversary of this 3rd studio album release (10/31 for vinyl).

I’ve never shared the full review, only the story on the artist who created the jigsaw image of Layne. Rolling Stone later released a book of just the magazine covers and the stories behind them.

RS gave this album 4 Stars, which according to them is “EXCELLENT”. I know many of you have favored this album over AiC’s freshman and sophomore albums. My personal thoughts about this album; Its too layered. Layne’s vocals are drowning from the over layering. It’s almost like he’s only providing backing vocals. His beautiful, strong voice is completely missing. I prefer the live tracks from the Live Album and Unplugged. As a lifelong fan, what I’ve learned about this band is they’re very careful about the music they put out, they do it for themselves ahead of all others, which I 100% agree with.

Although RS’s review is one of the more favorable you’ll see for this specific release, it’s really what the fans think. Below you’ll see my list of AiC albums (including EP’s) ranked from favorite to least favorite.

Dirt
Facelift
Jar of Flies
Unplugged
SAP
Black Gives Way to Blue
We Die Young
Rainier Fog
The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here
Alice In Chains

Everyone has their favorite, and we as fellow AiC fans need to respect each others favorites. Since Layne wrote many of the songs on the self titled album, I’m definitely grateful for it. However, I stand with what I said, I think the songs sound much better live. Specifically, God Am, Sludge Factory, Frogs, Again. Even though it’s still my least favorited album, I’m grateful it exists so that the live versions could be played.

RS review is from my personal collection

On this day 33 years ago (November 24, 1992) - Alice In Chains performed at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City, New York. Screaming Trees & opened. This year I’ve attached an article which was published on 11/22/92 in the NY Daily News (very last slide), I’ve also shared a couple other short newspaper clippings also from the NY area regarding the concert.

The following is an excerpt of a review from the Standard Star Newspaper; this was published the following month, December 1992. The best part, this piece was written by a High School Junior. “The Roseland concert hall in Manhattan was a haven for combat-clad youth on a Tuesday night in November. Alice In Chains, who recently released “Dirt” as a follow up to their last highly successful album “Facelift,” headlined the trio of Seattle bands that performed there. Alice in Chains is not typical Seattle grunge.
*
The group’s style is often
reminiscent of 70s hard rock influences like Black Sabbath — without those agonizing guitar solos. Their songs are short and to the point. The band is really tight. They don’t bother with the distortion common to grunge rock. The crowd, which was enveloped in a respectable mosh, was by no means brought down by Layne Staley’s lyrics which, for the most part, relate the frustration of he**in addiction. In fact, Layne was probably speaking of himself when he said, “Here’s a song about a hopeless ju**ie that ain’t so hopeless no more” before singing “Junkhead.” Delaney Martin, Mahopac High School

Mahopac is approximately 60 miles from NY City

My almost 82 y/o mom is a huge fan of Snoop Dog’s. She just loves him on “The Voice”. This is a clip I share each and every year. Chris Cornell & Tim Commerford during the Roskilde Festival in 2005!

I’ve continued to share this clip because as this page continues to grow, it’s important to recognize the happy moments like this. Plus, Chris & Tim are funny messing up the lyrics a bit. The clip goes right into Snoop Dogg’s clip “Gin & Juice”.
