My DJ Life

I joined the mix team at KKUU-FM, Palm Springs in the summer of 1998. The "all-new U-92.7," as it was known, hit the airwaves in March of that year with a mix of pop, hip-hop, and dance music. As a club DJ and dance music fanatic, I saw this as an amazing opportunity, and was thrilled to join the team.

The following year, U-92.7 tightened its focus on hip-hop and R&B, but I was given an opportunity to produce a Sunday night specialty show where I could spin whatever I wanted. I programmed those four hours with beat-mixed dance music and hosted the show live.

The Sunday Night Groove Mix was an immediate hit with KKUU's audience. In only 6 months, the station topped the Sunday night Arbitron ratings across the Coachella Valley! A mid-2000s move to Saturday night as The Pure Energy Mix Show helped the program last more than a decade.

The success of Pure Energy led to more professional opportunities. I became an on-air DJ at U-92.7 and its sister station Star 106.9, wrote a bi-weekly music column for Pulp magazine, gained a spot on the Billboard club chart panel, and I even appeared in a few music videos.
