On a sweltering August day in 2014, newly-anointed Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed his country of 1.1 billion people for the first time. He paid homage to the “Indian Dream,” where “[his] poor family…got the opportunity to pay its respects to the Tricolour of India at the Red Fort [in Delhi].” The child of a tea vendor who methodically worked his way through party politics, the Prime Minister painted his party’s vision of a unified, diverse, and opportunity-rich India, a manifestation of the rich cultural ideals of the Vedic period of 2,000 years ago.

Gaza-born photographer and influencer Motaz Azaiza stated that “as humans, we all have a responsibility to bear witness to what is happening in Gaza.” His words ring true amidst concerns in some circles that stories from Gaza are receiving less sympathetic media attention than Israeli stories, and that the conflict as a whole is being forgotten as the major news outlets chase fresher, more lucrative stories. In France, coverage of the Israel-Hamas war as a whole has dramatically decreased on mainstream channels. In the world of photojournalism, however, Palestinian stories are being recognized and uplifted.

On October 3, Mauritius and the United Kingdom reached a “historic agreement,” where the latter nation agreed to cede its contentious overseas territory — known as the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) — to Mauritius. Coming after 13 rounds of negotiations and decades of international pressure, the landmark agreement marks the end of Britain’s colonial presence in Africa.

Camptown prostitution continued throughout much of the Cold War with the acquiescence of both the U.S. and South Korean governments. U.S. commanders believed that prostitution was necessary to keep their soldiers “happy,” and justified camptown prostitution as advancing “friendly relations” between U.S. soldiers and the South Korean people.

Amid one of the most densely-populated areas on Earth, farm infrastructure takes on the characteristics of the city’s skyline. Towering aluminum pillars, some reaching nine meters high, mimic Singapore’s imposing skyscrapers. Yet an entirely different urban ecosystem emerges from these “A Go-Grow” towers — one meant to continually cultivate life rather than simply house it.

Since the turn of the century, economic expansion has become a weapon in global superpowers’ fights for regional control. Such is the case for China in Latin America. As of 2010, Chinese companies have invested an average of $10 billion yearly in Latin American trade and infrastructure. Economic endeavors in Latin America, most notably BRICS outreach and trade agreements, cut the United States off from potential allies by manufacturing Latin American dependency on China.

As the U.S. struggles with political polarization—fueled by a rise in right-wing populism which sent Donald Trump to the White House in 2016 and 2024—a Second China Shock could further fan the flames of working-class strife and entrench a shift in political ideology. Furthermore, the global order could be reshaped in the coming decades.
