In this study, intensive viral load monitoring and metagenomic sequencing were performed to acute retinal necrosis cases during antiviral treatment. The plateau phase of viral load curve correlated well with the remission of active necrotizing lesions. Loss-of-function variations in viral ribonucleotide reductase gene led to impaired virulence of the virus.

SHORT-TERM REACTIVATION OF RETINOPATHY OF PREMATURITY AFTER PRIMARY RANIBIZUMAB TREATMENT
Strawbridge, Jason MD; Cheng, John Y. MD; Gundlach, Bradley S. MD; Gillespie, Tessa BS; Karmouta, Reem BS; Khitri, Monica MD; Chu, Alison MD; Tsui, Irena MD
Retina 44(11):p 1945-1951, November 2024
Short-term reactivation of retinopathy of prematurity after primary intravitreal ranibizumab (IVR) occurred in 26.8% of patients at a range of 38.0 to 45.6 weeks postmenstrual age and 7.2 weeks ± 1.7 weeks after treatment. Risk factors included zone I disease, earlier treatment, and lower gestational age. Repeat IVR injections were effective and well tolerated.

Retina 44(11):p 1961-1965, November 2024
This study investigates Gunn dots in healthy children aged 11 to 12 years, finding their prevalence, distribution, and associations with age and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. The clinical significance of Gunn dots remains uncertain, but their location suggests potential relevance in the study of age-related eye conditions.

Retina 44(11):p 1937-1944, November 2024
Macular thickness fluctuations were studied retrospectively over a 12-month period in eyes affected by diabetic macular edema treated with an intravitreal dexamethasone implant. Greater fluctuations were found to be associated with poorer visual outcomes and could be a more predictive indicator of visual prognosis than individual measurements of central subfield thickness measurements.

Supplemental dextrose has historically been added to the infusion during vitrectomy in diabetic patients to reduce intraoperative lensectomy. However, this analysis of modern vitrectomy showed no difference in intraoperative lensectomy rate or postoperative cataract course with or without dextrose supplementation.

COMPLEX MACULAR HOLE CLOSURE BY TEMPORAL INTERNAL LIMITING MEMBRANE FLAP WITHOUT ENDOTAMPONADE

Temporal internal limiting membrane flap without gas endotamponade is effective in closing complex macular hole (MH), including large MH and MH associated with high myopia. Retinal surgeons may consider using this technique for complex MH, particularly in patients with only-seeing eye, preexisting glaucoma, or noncompliant to posturing.

PERFLUOROCARBON LIQUID USE DURING VITRECTOMY FOR MACULA-OFF RETINAL DETACHMENT HAS NO IMPACT ON MACULAR FOLDS AND METAMORPHOPSIA
Wurtz, Mathieu MD; Dormegny, Lea MD; Muller, Candice MD; Bourcier, Tristan MD, PhD; Ballonzoli, Laurent MD; Gaucher, David MD, PhD; Saleh, Maher MD, PhD
Retina 44(11):p 1891-1898, November 2024
This study compared two drainage techniques in macula-off retinal detachment (RD) surgery: perfluorocarbon liquid (PFCL)-assisted drainage and partial subretinal fluid drainage without PFCL. Morphological and functional outcomes, especially metamorphopsia quantification scores, were similar in both groups. These surgical techniques showed similar efficacy for primary macula-off RD treatment.

FIVE-YEAR CHANGES IN METAMORPHOPSIA AND THE ASSOCIATION OF OUTER RETINAL LAYERS AFTER VITRECTOMY FOR RHEGMATOGENOUS RETINAL DETACHMENT INVOLVING THE MACULA
Okuda, Tetsuhiko MD, PhD; Higashide, Tomomi MD, PhD; Sugiyama, Kazuhisa MD, PhD
Retina 44(11):p 1884-1890, November 2024
The authors evaluated the 5-year changes in metamorphopsia after vitrectomy for macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Metamorphopsia presented more than 50% of the patients at 5 years postoperatively, and early metamorphopsia was a poor prognostic marker for long-term functional deficits.

It is difficult to clearly distinguish clinical cases of punctate inner choroidopathy from multifocal choroiditis and panuveitis, even with the aid of diagnostic criteria. Reevaluating existing criteria and considering additional characteristics could improve diagnostic accuracy.

PROGRESSION OF PERIPAPILLARY AND MACULAR CHORIORETINAL ATROPHY IN MULTIFOCAL CHOROIDITIS IS ASSOCIATED WITH PERIATROPHIC INFLAMMATORY PLUMES
Ossewaarde-van Norel, Jeannette MD PhD; Spaide, Richard F. MD
Retina 44(11):p 1860-1868, November 2024
In patients with multifocal choroiditis, we observed eyes that had a smoldering inflammation at the borders of peripapillary and macular chorioretinal atrophy. This inflammation appeared to be associated with the progression of atrophy, despite the use of what was typically considered adequate immunosuppression.
