Añjasa by Apsaras Dance Company:
The segment on Mahadevi Temple Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha.

Añjasa means “the path” in Pali, the classical language of Buddhism. In this dance production, the audience will experience the wonders of Buddhist monuments across Asia - LUMBINI (Nepal)

This is the sacred place where Prince Siddhartha Gautama born and his energy still pervades here at the main temple of the Maya Devi Temple in Lumbini, Nepal. The holy site is a place of a sacred garden and a sacred pool, a place of tree shrines, the earliest Buddhist tree shrine in the world. The dance choreography illustrated these natural elements and also enacted the birth of the baby prince born here beneath the scared Sal tree, while his queen mother supported herself with a branch, and, it is said, a miracle unfolded. With each step he took, they say, a lotus flower bloomed. And a mother’s dream of a blessing to come, of a Divine birth, came true.

Javali : Bharatanatyam dance performed by Seema Hari Kumar, Sreedevy Sivarajasingam & Meera Balasubramanian, composition of Poochi Srinivasa Iyengar, Choreographed by Smt Bragha Bessell

A more contemporary addition to the Bharathanatyam repertoire describing worldly relationships with shades of the shringara rasa. Sarasamuladedenduku - In this piece, the nayika, a sveeya nayika gets dressed to go out with her husband. They flirt generously in her dressing room. But the moment they step out onto the streets, she resists his amorous advances.

Now is not the time to get intimate, swamy. We are out in the open, where even a speck of dust is visible in this bright moonlit night. What would people say? Let our love play be within the confines of our abode.

Kalinga Narthanam
by Apoorva Jayaraman and Shweta Prachande exclusively for www.avai.video
Sharing the trailer video.

Eastern philosophy considers the ego, or ahamkara, as the worst of vices. Indian lore abounds withstories of the subjugation of ego in man, many of which are re-told time and again, in the voices of various poets, through the affable persona of Krishna. Kalinga Nartanam is a presentation of the famous episode of Krishna as a little boy fighting the giant serpent Kalinga, through the immortal composition of Oothukadu Venkata Kavi, as an iconic metaphor for victory over the ago. Veiled by ego, the serpent Kalinga wreaks havoc by the banks of the river Yamuna. He poisons the waters of the river. The cattle and villagers are tormented by his presence. Young Krishna promptly jumps into
the river, engages in a dual with the fierce Kalinga, only to subdue him, going on to merrily dance on his many heads.

This scene has been visualised in dance by Priyadarsini Govind, through the words and music of Oothukadu Venkata Kavi, as a duet presentation, danced by Apoorva Jayaraman and Shweta Prachande. Filmed at AVAI at Apsaras Arts, lighting design by Vidhya Venkat,

Bharatanatyam performance of a DEVARNAMA by Ashmitha Jayaprakash.

In this composition, a Gopi complains to another about little Krishna’s antics, saying, “Is he a small child? He slips away every time I try to catch him. He is always troubling me and embarrassing me in different ways. He asks me to share with him the secret of childbirth. Once, he blocked my way and asked me to embrace him; another time, he asked me for butter while I was churning the curd and, upon refusal, troubled me and misbehaved both times. He even came to my house stealthily and hugged me while I was asleep. I assumed it was my husband, and he embarrassed me the next morning, saying I need not worry as he is Purandara Vitthala!” Performed by Ashmitha for Darshana - Intimate Dance series presented by Apsaras Dance Company.

Sharing the trailer of the Mohiniattam performance of "Vinnavinchavaleneeku" by Methil Devika available to watch on www.avai.video

Vinnavinchavaleneeku is a mesmerizing composition by Annamacharya, beautifully set to music in the Ragam Maandu by Sathiraju Venumadhav. This enchanting piece was filmed as part of the Tamrapatra series hosted by Natyarambha, and heartfelt thanks to Ananda Shankar Jayant and Anupama Kylash for bringing this exquisite song to light.

In this lyrical masterpiece, Alamelumanga implores her husband Lord Srinivasa not to constantly dwell on her faults when he visits her at night. She artfully expresses that if she were to mirror his word and action entirely, it would be like adding sugar to jaggery, overwhelming in sweetness, losing the balance and charm. She compares her occasional admonishments to a pinch of salt, enhancing the overall flavor like in a dish made of jaggery. She poetically depicts their intertwined relationship as that of lotuses and lilies, acknowledging that excessive closeness can lead to the fragility of the blossoms. She even playfully asks whether he would mind her leaving marks on his soft body in moments of intense intimacy. She likens their bond to diamonds and pearls suggesting that diamonds appear more striking and beautiful when they are paired with pearls in jewelry. And she is that pearl that helps his devotees realise his magnificence. She addes that he came down from Vaikuntha to own her. He gives her that kind of privilege. Then why must he find faults?

Choreography- Dr. Methil Devika
Vocals- Meera Rammohan
Mridangam/ Maddalam- Vaippin Satheesh
Edakka- Sajith Pappan
Veena- Baiju Rajeeth

Sharing the trailer of the Bharatanatyam performance Tandavesha by Anjana Anand available to watch exclusively on www.avai.video

Tandavesha speaks of the origin of the percussion syllables: Ta-Dhi-Thom-Num.

The Balarama Bharatham describes these syllables as originating from the bell of the Lord Shiva’s anklet which flew into the sky amidst his frenzied tandava.

Fearing that the Earth would be unable to bear the force of the bell as it landed, the compassionate Lord took the weight upon his head, shoulders, thigh and finally let it fall gently onto Mother Earth, thus creating the 4 rhythmic syllables.

Chaturasra Pada – The quadrangle of precision
Temple architecture reveres and acknowledges the four cardinal directions, and it is these that help create the axis of the temple and the alignment of the perfect square. Originating from the structure of the Vedic fire alter, the square is considered divine for its perfection in symmetry. The concentric squares of a temple begin from the large outward space that houses the deity’s procession, to the inner courtyard that has the sopper mast, and finally the sanctum sanctorum the quadrangle space that is a manifestation of the macro cosmic.
