3 generations of clubbers do not know just how important our city was to techno on the world stage during the 1990’s. So influential that it spawned its own genre, the ‘Birmingham sound’, pioneered by the likes of Regis, Surgeon, Downwards Records amongst many others. But unlike so many other locations around the globe, I think it’s fair to say Birmingham never took itself too seriously. First and foremost, techno events were a party - and this is something we have done our upmost to carry forward to our events 30 years on!

First founded in 1993, House Of God became one of Birmingham's most important underground institutions during this era and is now the only modern-day reminder of just how inspiring and iconic techno music was in our city. These parties are world renowned and still sell-out shows an incredible 31 years after the launch.

We know the HOG crew and we know they will bat away any praise - but, congratulations on an incredible, scene-defining 31 years of events - we shall see you later! On your knees sinners! Brum as F**k!

Francois Kervorkian starting the debate … when music becomes just the tool for the self gratification of the DJ, like for the recently posted James Hype video climbing all over the decks needlessly smashing buttons and pyrotechnics, you have to ask the question, where does the music sit in this equation?

The Detroit music journalist Dan Sicko's research material has long been held at the University of Michigan since his death. I've known there was tape with a Drexciya interview but didn't know the details until now. It's just over 12 mins long and most likely dates from 1997. I think the quotes were used in his Techno Rebels book and quite possibly Techno: The Rough Guide by Tim Barr (Sicko wrote a few of the entries). You can request the tape in person or listen online if connected to the campus network (for students, see link at base of post). Cool to see who else is on the same tape (see below).

So today in NYC I had the most bizarre experience in my 40 years music career.
I went to meet a long established PR man who was ‘offering’ his unsolicited help to have me ‘all over the place’ as a ‘Disco’ remixer. He ended up extremely upset of me not being in awe of remixing high profile major label artists for lower fees, simply because I wasn’t into their music.
Since I didn’t want to be shoe horned into his business model, he literally kicked me out of his office, calling me the biggest arrogant he’d ever met, threatening to call the police !
Well, it turns out I’m happy to remain arrogant, if that means standing up against the music business for what I believe. Don’t get ever bullied peeps, make the decisions - good or bad - you believe in.
