Isabella Tree is an absolute hero of mine. An award winning author, travel writer and rewilding innovator, her book Wilding has changed my life. This conversation is one of my absolute favourites this season.

Along with her husband Charlie, she is in the middle of a pioneering rewilding project in West Sussex called Knepp – a living example of nature's incredible ability to heal and repair if we give it the chance. Shifting our baseline view of nature from one of scarcity back to abundance.

I think of rewilding as an analogy for so many systems that are broken and barren and how we could participate in the restoration of those whole systems. A rewilding world would heal us, would restore the context for a flourishing humanity. And I don't really see what's stopping us.

Now, we find ourselves ready for change as we respond to this critical moment in time that asks us to evolve beyond storytelling, toward collective action for systems change.

Yep. It’s true. A large dog like Batman here could have the same eco footprint as owning an SUV. Even smaller dogs could have the same eco footprint as Nanna’s Barina. ⁠
⁠
Fortunately, there are ways you can reduce their pawprint (excuse the pun). Here’s 5 to get you started:⁠
⁠
❤️ Hand me the hand me downs⁠
Where possible, try to use second hand items such as bowls, toys, leads and collars. By giving something pre loved a new life, you’re saving money, saving waste from landfill, and reducing the impact of production of new items (often made of nasty materials). For those puppy parents, when they grow out of their gear, ask your mates if they want some freebies!⁠
⁠
💩 Pick up your dog’s p**p⁠
Dog p**p contains nitrogen and phosphorus, which can deplete oxygen that water-based life needs to survive, not to mention encouraging the growth of harmful algae. One p**p here or there might not seem like much, but it allllll adds up when it hits our waterways. Oh, and make sure the baggies are biodegradable!⁠
⁠
🌱 Compost your dog’s p**p⁠
Dog p**p in your compost can be a great soil additive for revegetation, a growing lawn or flower beds. Although it should never be used on crops grown for human consumption. For every two shovels full of dog p**p, add at least one shovel full of sawdust or other carbon material. Mix thoroughly after every time you add it in.⁠
⁠
🧼 Go green when you clean⁠
Opt for natural, non-toxic grooming and cleaning products. They’re safer for your best mate, and safer for the environment. Nasty chemicals are used in a lot of products, and these in greater volume can harm wildlife both in and out of the water. ⁠
⁠
🐶 Feed a food that has a conscience⁠
