Our Story
Incandescent is a bi-annual zine showcasing emerging photographers from around the world who work with color film. It was dreamt up at a sunny picnic table in Portland, Oregon by three friends tired of paying submission fees, and in love with shooting color film. Though we know there are great photos out there of all kinds we decided that day in the backyard to feature color analog photography in this zine. Our goal has always been to be able to show new photography at an affordable price without asking for submission fees. Founded in 2011 by Michael Cardiello, Marissa Csanyi, and Helen Jones Incandescent is currently run by Helen with the help of a rotating cast of friends and supporters, such as frequent co-editor Anna Knecht Schwarzer. Over the years we’ve been based out of an attic, a basement, a car, and a travel trailer. This is a shoestring project, but one we feel has had beautiful results. It has been an inspiration to share the work of over 250 talented photographers from almost 50 countries over the last seven years, and we hope to keep it up for many more.
