Soulstice author Abdi Abdirahman (right) is in Paris with Mo Farah (left) to cheer on their friend and training partner Bashir Abdi in the marathon. Mo Farah competed in two Olympics, while this is the third Olympics for Bashir, who represents Belgium. Abdi, of course, has represented the US in five Olympic Games. We'll be cheering, too, for these three friends with Somali roots, dedication to running, and evident joie de vivre!

Journalist Kevin Baxter of the LA Times quotes Soulstice author Matt Baxter in this in-depth look at Flagstaff Olympic training. Baxter says, “For a distance runner, there’s no place in the world like Flagstaff." So true! Read all about it in Matt's book (co-authored with Coach Ron Mann), "Running Up the Mountain: Northern Arizona Altitude, Lumberjack Attitude, and the Making of a Distance Dynasty."

The geography of Flagstaff, Ariz., makes it a mecca for distance runners. It also could makes it an attractive training ground ahead of the 2028 Olympics.

When a horsewoman wins a blue ribbon, it's cause for celebration. When that horsewoman is a Soulstice author, we jump for joy. Congratulations, Julie Morrison!

The Journey Grand Prize for Memoir- I know the journey should be enough in itself, especially touched by those on it, then more especially capped by publishers who felt its story could be a book, and it was- is- more than enough- and - I also love a beautiful ribbon!

"My grandmother would get us up really early, like four-thirty or five. She had us run as far as we could, and then we would come back and do chores. If a little lamb needed to be fed, we would make its bottle and feed it. We would take the sheep out of the corral and herd them. We had fun during those times. My other cousins would come over, and we would play and have a good time. Sometimes we would ride horses. If it rained, we would play in the mud; it was really fun then. In the evening we would bring the sheep back.
“My grandmother would always cook outside. She would make the dough for fry bread and bake the potatoes in the fire. After we would eat, we would do the dishes. She would share her evening time by telling us stories. While she told us the stories, we would watch her brush her hair. Next we would wash up. Then we would go to sleep under the shade house on sheepskin or goatskin. It was comfortable so we never complained about sleeping on it." ~Laura Lee Yazzie

"My mom tells me that when she was young, she spent most of her time herding sheep, but she also had an area which was her playground. Her toys were sticks used to make horses, and rocks shaped like babies made into pretend dolls. Sometimes my mom would just tie a scarf around a rock and carry it around like it was her baby.
"Other times my mom and her cousin would pretend to make a cake, like they were having a kinaaldá. They would use soil to make the cake. Looking for yellowcolored rocks, they would use them as corn. They would pretend to grind the corn to make
pudding for the kinaaldá." ~Maye Zee, translating for her mother, Rebecca N. Zee

"At seventy-eight, my mom, Sylvia, still weaves, herds sheep, shears them, relocates the corral every time it gets dirty by reusing things like mattress springs and parts of cars for the sides of her corral."

Books with soul

Soulstice Publishing took root between the ponderosa pines at the base of the San Francisco Peaks. Our community of Flagstaff, Arizona, is home to Lowell Observatory, Northern Arizona University, the Museum of Northern Arizona, and so much more. This mountain town abounds with scientists, artists, athletes, and many other people who love the outdoors. It’s quite an inspiring place to live. Considering the dearth of oxygen at our 7,000-foot elevation, you might say it leaves us breathless.

Soulstice was founded by professional editors who enjoy working together and with authors and potential authors whose stories intrigue and move us. We’re experienced project managers who love to see good ideas—stories with soul— become quality books.

If you think we can help you turn your dream of publication into reality, contact us! We’d love to talk with you.
