Ingenuity! Leave it to the author of a ranch memoir (Barbed) to figure out how to get a sign to stay up on a windy day. Great job, Julie Morrison Writer. Thank you, Northern Arizona Book Festival for holding this celebration of books. #noazbookfest #soulsticepublishing
In a volcanic crater east of Flagstaff is an exceptional feature: Walker Lake. The famous photographer Timothy O'Sullivan took several photos of it in November 1871. John Vankat precisely rephotographed them and more than 100 other historical photos for his book "The San Francisco Peaks and Flagstaff Through the Lens of Time." John is guiding a walk to Walker Lake this Saturday, hosted by CCC Comet Walks. The tour quickly sold out, but there will be other opportunities to walk with this thoughtful ecologist, photographer, writer, and historian throughout this year. #throwbackthursday #landscapephotography #FlagstaffArizona
Campsite of the Merriam Expedition Near Modern-Day Flagstaff, Arizona
In 1889, pioneering ecologists under the leadership of C. Hart Merriam came to the San Francisco Peaks to research the distribution of species and ecosystems. Their studies led to development of the theory of "life zones." In this video, watch 130 years of time pass in a moment as their campsite becomes the dense forest found in that spot today. How's that for Throwback Thursday!
This is just one of the more than 100 photo pairings in John L. Vankat's book "The San Francisco Peaks and Flagstaff Through the Lens of Time," available now from us and wherever books are sold. #throwbackthursday #lensoftimebook #arizonahistory
