Another excellent resource from the brilliant Reading Opens Doors with Elise Ellerman. Sophie Masson and Lorena Carrington’s beautiful new picture book The Giant is rubbing shoulders with lots of other lovely books.

PICTURE BOOKS FOR OLDER READERS
This is a collection of sophisticated picture books for older readers. Suitable to explore with children in upper primary and lower secondary school. The criteria I applied for choosing these books included that they are excellent to use to support the development of visual literacy, they employ illustrative complexity, a non-traditional narrative structure and metafictive devices. They also abound with opportunities for interpretive reading. If you are interested in a copy of this collection, it is available on the Reading Opens Doors website in the 'free resources' tab here: https://www.readingopensdoors.com.au/free-resources

We are publishing our first illustrated Junior Fiction next year. It's a thrilling eco-adventure by Cerise Madsen called 'Animal Force', about twins who go on a camping trip with their family, having to deal with school bullies who might just end up destroying everything around them. With gorgeous illustrations by Sally Heinrich, it is designed to pull even the most reluctant readers in. Look out for it in June 2026.

COVER REVEAL
First cab off the rank in 2026 is the much anticipated picture book 'Audrey Skips' by award-winning author Andrea Rowe and wonderful illustrator Lisa Coutts. Follow the story of how Audrey skips into the hearts of the people of Melbourne. Based on the true story of Australia's first animated neon sign The Skipping Girl, her demise during the depression and the communal efforts to make her shine once more, 'Audrey Skips' also tells a universal story of kindness, conservation and hope.

Our Story

MidnightSun Publishing has grown out of a disenchantment with the established publishing houses in Australia. We know there are plenty of fabulous manuscripts about unusual topics floating around, but publishing new and unknown writers poses a big risk. MidnightSun is prepared to take that risk.

We want our readers to be entertained. We want to challenge, excite, enrage and overwhelm. Therefore, we publish books in any genre that have touched us in some way. Because we are a new publishing company, striving to become established, we expect our writers to be enthusiastic about their own work and able to promote it in the wider community.

MidnightSun Publishing produces beautiful, enjoyable and sometimes challenging books. Anna Solding's The Hum of Concrete was released in March 2012 and since then we’ve gone from strength to strength. Many of our books have been shortlisted for and won awards. Some have been translated and published overseas. Check them out here: http://midnightsunpublishing.com/
