We had some very special visitors to the boat today… the original owners who sailed it around the world over 20 years ago! The internet is capable of some pretty miraculous things.

We’ve been in touch with Jerry and Cheryl since we first purchased the boat. After visiting the boat for the first time (the evening before the auction) Matt got to researching all of its unique and unusual modifications. After a few hours of research, he discovered an old article that was published in that detailed every one of those unusual mods.

After researching the author’s name (whose boat it was) we found her blog which she had recently posted on, and reached out letting her know we were buying her old sailboat, then called White Dove.

It was really driven home when we discovered the etched glass door with the name and an image of a dove inside!

After a month or so of communication (Matt and Jerry spoke on the phone for sometimes an hour or more at a time!) they asked if they could come visit. We were elated! They made the drive down to our nearest campground and we met up to tour the boat and go to lunch.

To say they were shocked to see the boat in the condition it’s in would be an understatement… but then I showed them how far it’s come since it’s been in our hands and they were excited we were cleaning it up (even if it’s still in far worse cosmetic shape than they sold it for in the early 2000s.)

They confirmed they purchased the boat when it was just 3 years old, in 1993, for $50k. They lived on it for years while making another estimated $40-$50k in modifications to take it around the world in the late 90s. We asked about some of the modification choices and Jerry said he chose to do a lot of it so that Cheryl, a petite lady like myself, would have an easier time. It’s fitting because I’m only 5’1”!

We had a lovely time looking through the scrapbooks they made of their time with the boat, and I was nearly in tears when we parted ways. It was an honor to show them our future plans with this special sailboat, and to continue its legacy under the name Unless while we prepare to undertake our own journeys around the world painting and enjoying life.

Just a little appreciation post for our $1 beauty! We’re now looking at around $600 spent on new batteries, cleaning supplies, wiring components and bottom cleaning to get her up and running. The engine runs! The main sail still needs a few repairs. The bowsprit needs replaced altogether, BUT we’re much closer to moving her in a few weeks. It’ll be the first time she’s moved from this slip in over a year.

We’re still thrilled we made the leap to buy this cool boat and have a great time working on it together.

What should I make our next Reel about?

I can’t believe it but this story is getting wilder by the week.

We’re in touch with one of the previous owners and he just confirmed this info is 100% accurate.

We’re talking about someone randomly messaging me on a small Instagram account (at the time he messaged we only had 500 followers) because he recognized the boat from a video I posted. And this was 25 years ago!

Our $1 sailboat turned out to be famous!

This is our boat- previously called White Dove.

We’ll be posting a Reel Monday evening detailing the incredible story of how we scored this beauty (for just $1!), and how we plan to bring it back to its former glory.

Hello hello! We’re Matt and Kayla DeVito and decided we have enough wild stories and adventures to warrant starting a brand new account to record them 🤪

I (Kayla) am a full-time artist and Matt is a fine woodworker, master carpenter and jack of all trades. We’ve been together a whole decade (next month!) and have been married for 6 years. We’re best friends, are both unusually short and have the time of our lives together. We weirdly never fight but do both have strong opinions and express them vividly 😂

We’ve been interviewed several times by production companies for Magnolia TV and HGTV, but have ultimately been declined (not meant to be- oh well! Still makes a cool story.) I was also interviewed and ultimately denied by Capitol Records in Nashville for a songwriting connection many years ago, but that’s a story for another day 😂

We first came to the public eye when we completely gutted and outfitted a mini bus into a traveling retail shop for my jewelry line that at the time, I had managed to get into over 100 boutique stores nationwide (and in Australia!) The bus was featured in a national magazine and became “Pinterest famous” for being the first of its kind. Later on, we opened a retail shop that was also picked up by several publications for its unique interior and goods. When I began painting our lovely coastal town, our other Instagram took off and I secured deals to teach oil painting to beginners all over Europe.

We both love vintage cars: my daily driver is a 1965 Mercury Comet, Melvin the Mini Bus is a 1985 Chevy C60 and we’ve had other various cool rebuilt trucks in the past.

Matt and I work so well together, and create some really neat things. We also make friends wherever we go, have a crazy amount of fun, share in our love of dumb humor- and we really just want to share our journeys with you! This account will serve as a “blog” of sorts because we just took on something insanely cool that we’ve been itching to share with you. What better way to do that than this new account!

Follow along to keep up with our travels, painting trips and other… trips… that I can’t wait to reveal so SOON!!!!
