A common issue we see in churches is that musicians’ in-ear mixes are wacky.

Thought this exchange would be beneficial to share.

If your musicians mix themselves, especially with P16/Aviom/Etc, this is hopefully going to help if you are having any issues.

I want to add that self-mixed monitors lend themselves to shy vocalists turning themselves up too loud in their own monitors. This creates a vicious cycle of them being even more shy for the louder parts.

To fix: don’t set your personal vocal level by whispering “check” in the mic when you arrive on stage. Set it for when you can sing your loudest, comfortably.

Fun fact: If your mic is feeding back when you have one ear bud out, you have yourself too loud 🙉
And if you have one ear bud out then your other ear is probably getting blasted.

One way to accomplish our remote services!

The good old fashioned way of “facetiming” works great when training church staff how to navigate and use their soundboard to its full potential.

In this clip we were going over gain staging/makeup gain to ensure optimal levels flowing through the board. We had noticed some clipping during the recording, and this was a training to set optimal levels.

Let Emperor Audio improve your churches online and in-house audio. Not only will we make you sound like a record, but we will train and take care of your audio needs over the long term, to help your church, band, and sound team grow!

Excellent worship experiences are so much more than having top of the line gear. But it helps!

The biggest, most prominent complaint of churches concerning their broadcast audio is, “our in-house sounds good, but our online mix sounds nothing like it”. It is much more difficult to get a good online mix than it is to experience good worship in house. Live room ambience, congregational singing, and loud speakers all contribute to a full and engaging sound inside of a house of worship.

The online mix needs more to achieve that:

💡 Crowd mics enable more of the ambience from the live room and singing to come through

💡 Online mixes need a professional touch, since they can be compared with pro mixes on the internet

💡 Having a top-notch mixing room is required to have a competitive mix, and most churches don’t have that

If you feel like you are stuck with your online mixes sounding dull and lifeless, reach out to us for a quote. We have price points for any church budget.

Drums. Drums will make or break just about everything in a church audio production. They decide the house volume. They drive the rhythm. They bleed into mics if not done properly. A livestream mix sounds terrible if the drums sound terrible. And vice versa. People think it is vocals that affect perceived quality the most, but usually drums are what “place” the song in any kind of genre.

How do you get good drum sounds? Proper tuning of the skins, mic placement, and drummer training on how to hit them. If those three things are in place, the mix is surprisingly easy. Here are some rules of thumb:

1. A kick “in” mic will get your kick sounding 80% right. Beta 91a is the mic of choice
2. A 57 on the snare, two inches inside the rim and almost flat, is going to sound close.
3. Don’t put tom mics right at the rim. If you pull them closer to the center (about 33% inside the rim), they will sound more natural
4. Don’t put overheads super wide, or close to the cymbals. A few feet apart and a few feet off the cymbals is best.

Pro Tools is the industry standard DAW. It is our DAW of choice when working on serious studio projects. The powerful editing, workflow, and speed of the program earns its top spot in most post production facilities.

Even with all of this, Pro Tools is not our DAW of choice when sending clients a custom mix template. It is the most expensive, and has a large learning curve. The sonic difference is negligible, even if there is one at all. The stock plugins are better than most stock DAW plugins, but this can be overcome with third party plugin manufacturers such as Waves.

DM us if you want to learn more about what DAW we set churches up with as a part of our standard broadcast mix bundle.

Logic Pro is a great DAW to do a livestream mix in. Most churches have Mac computers running, and this $200 purchase is easily attainable to upgrade a livestream audio feed for an online church mix. Coupled with Waves plugins and drum triggers, you can get a great sound with the right template and mix engineer.

All you need is a digital soundboard with a USB interface port, and a USB A-B cable. Unless you are running Dante. The rest involves getting the routing taken care of between the board and the computer.
