TIKTOK WARNS US BAN WOULD 'TRAMPLE FREE SPEECH'

TikTok says a potential ban on its app in the US would "trample the free speech" of 170 million Americans.

The US House of Representatives voted on Saturday to ban TikTok if the app's owner does not cut its ties with China.

The legislation was part of a US foreign policy package that included aid for Ukraine and could become law as early as next week.

In recent months US officials have voiced alarm over TikTok's popularity with young people.

They allege TikTok's owner Bytedance is subservient to Beijing - accusations it has repeatedly denied.

The TikTok legislation was included in a package, approved by lawmakers, that would send $61bn (£49bn) in foreign aid to Ukraine, as well as money for Israel and Taiwan.

The House of Representatives voted on TikTok's future first - with 360 to 58 voting on the updated divest-or-ban bill.

The Senate is expected to vote on the bill next week and previously US President Joe Biden has said he will sign the legislation.

If the bill becomes law, Bytedance will have nine months to sell its stake - with a possible three-month extension while a sale is in progress - or face a ban. [BBC]

Court dismisses damage case after girl says she slept with ex boyfriend more than twice

A FATHER of an 18-year old Grade 12 girl who was impregnated by her boyfriend was left bewildered after the court dismissed the case of damage.

Kedrick Muwowo had dragged Chanda Kamango in this case citing compensation for damage after his daughter was impregnated by the defendant.

The matter came up before Magistrate Harriet Mulenga in Matero Local Court.

Magistrate Mulenga asked Chanda if he was responsible for the pregnancy to which he accepted.

She then ordered the girl, Mary Muwowo, to stand before the court.

Magistrate Mulenga asked Mary if Chanda was her first boyfriend to which she answered in the negative.

When asked who her first boyfriend was, Mary mentioned the name Mathews Mulenga.

“How many times did you sleep with Mathews?” Magistrate Mulenga asked.

Mary responded that she could not remember but it was more than twice.

At this point, Magistrate Mulenga told the two parties that the claim of compensation for damage was not successful because Mathews was the one who damaged Mary and not Chanda.

The ruling shocked Muwowo because as far as he was concerned, Chanda had accepted the charge.

Magistrate Mulenga explained to Muwowo that the person to sue for damage was Mathews and not Chanda.

BOYD MKANDAWIRE SPEAKS OUT: I HOLD NOTHING AGAINST KALABA EVEN THOUGH CHARLENE WAS MY WIFE UNTIL HER DEATH

… I paid lobola to her mother!

FORMER Kabwe Warriors player Boyd Mukandawire says Charlene Mumba was his wife as he paid K12,000 dowry to her mother in 2014.

According to Kalemba, Boyd said despite what happened, he is praying for the well being of former Chipolopolo soccer player Rainford Kalaba who is rumored to have been having a relationship with his wife.

The couple had two children together.

Boyd said he married Charlene in 2014 and had been charged K20,000 as dowry out of which he paid K12,000.

“We got married in 2014 when she was still learning at Arakan School in G12, I just paid dowry to her mother and we started staying together,” said Boyd.

“We never separated with my wife, the reason she went to stay that side in Chilenje was because it was near the hotel she was working, we thought that in Emmasdel, we would only be wasting a lot of money and she carried our eldest son Boyd because it could be easier to prepare him for school.”

He said while Charlene was at her mother's place, he communicated with her regularly as his wife and nothing seemed wrong.

Boyd said he had no idea that Charlene was having an affair with Kalaba whom he regarded as his elder brother until the day of the accident.

He revealed that her death came as double shock to him as he also came to discover that she was cheating on him with a man he regarded as a mentor and elder brother.

“I regarded Kalaba as my elder brother, I don’t feel myself right now, I can't lie to you because leaving my children orphaned like that, who is going to be taking care of them now. My wife is no more and I blame both of them but I will continue to regard Kalaba as my Elder brother... So as for now I cant say he is not my elder brother despite the situation and I wish him a quick recovery, in fact am praying he gets well soon.

“I Just got shocked after finding out I cant lie, you just

POLICE BUST GLOBAL CYBER GANG ACCUSED OF INDUSTRIAL-SCALE FRAUD

Police have taken down a gang accused of using a technology service that helped criminals use fraudulent text messages to steal from victims.

They have arrested 37 people worldwide and are contacting victims.

Officers say younger people who grew up with the internet were the most likely to fall for the "phishing" scam.

The technology allowed scammers without technical skills to bombard victims with messages designed to trick them into making payments online.

Police targeted the gang's site, LabHost, which helped criminals send the messages and direct victims to fake websites appearing to be legitimate online payment or shopping services.

It had enabled the criminals to steal identity information, including 480,000 card numbers and 64,000 Pin codes, known in criminal slang as "fullz data", the police said.

Detectives do not know how much money was stolen but estimate the LabHost site made nearly £1m ($1.25m) in profits. [BBC]

LEVY MWANAWASA HOSPITAL SUED OVER SURGICAL BANDAGE LEFT IN PATIENTS ABDOMEN

By Darius Choonya

Lusaka's Levy Mwanawasa Hospital has been dragged to court by a patient who was left with a surgical bandage (Gossypiboma) embedded within her abdomen during a c-section in January 2023.

The complainant in this matter, Idah Lungu is seeking among other claims an amount of K1. 4 million as special damages.

Ms. Lungu in her statement of claim says on January 03, 2023, she had a full-term pregnancy and was admitted to Levy Mwanawasa Hospital where she was booked for Caesarean Section procedure for the delivery of her baby.

She further says six months after being discharged from the hospital in June 2023, she began to experience severely excruciating abdominal pains and was treated for gastritis at a local private clinic where treatment appeared to ease the pain.

The complainant further says in October 2023, she developed severe diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pains and was subsequently treated for typhoid at a private clinic but despite the treatment of the said typhoid, her condition continued to deteriorate causing her to experience regular syncopes and numbness in the legs which resulted in her having difficulties in walking.

Ms. Lungu, however, says on December 3, 2023, she underwent surgery at Mina Soko Military Hospital whose personnel found an abdominal pack consisting of surgical bandage (gossypiboma) embedded within the plaintiff's abdomen which had negligently been left in her abdomen during the c-section conducted by Levy Mwanawasa Hospital in January of 2023.

She says the hospital then proceeded to extract the said abdominal pack from the plaintiff's abdomen and sutured her abdomen thereafter.
