3AM whilst on anchor, the wind picked up. A highest gust of almost 50 knots, lightening all around us and the heaviest rain we've ever seen. Our Rocna anchor was still holding, until a sailboat dragged anchor and crashed into us. Our anchors were then tangled up, being dragged towards the rocks. We tried everything to untangle ourselves, in the process he hit into us about 6 times.
In the end, we had to ditch our anchor. This left us motoring around the bay until first light when we could try and locate our anchor.
We spent the next two days freediving to try and find it (we knew where it had dropped due to our anchor track on our phones) but it was nowhere to be seen. With no visibility in the water, we looked as hard as was possible, freediving down to 10 metres barely being able to see a hand in front of you. We can only presume the other boat (who dissapeard as soon as we freed ourselves) had dragged the anchor somewhere else.
We managed to buy some chain here in Gaeta, which we will use with our back up Danforth anchor until things are sorted with insurance. The damage definitely could have been worse, with a lost anchor, broken solar panel and mount, and bent pushpit being the extent of it.
It shook us up ALOT and we spent two days in the Marina resting up and getting ourselves prepared to get back out on anchor.
Good news is we're feeling okay now, but a lot more wary of thunderstorms and the unprectable winds they can bring 🤣
Those at sea Sunsets just hit different 😍
Our passage from Menorca to Sardinia wasn't quite as we planned, but it never is! The passage was planned to take around 50 hours (based on our average speed of 4-4.5 knots) but actually took us just 35 hours, with an average speed of 6knots which was awesome 😅😅
UNFORTUNATELY this was due to us motorsailing. We were outrunning lightening and high winds, which was quite spooky to witness at sea! Thankfully the lightening stayed behind us and we had a relatively calm passage (the waves sometimes a little uncomfortable at 1.5 metres, but mostly coming up from behind so not too bad!) Saw a couple of sea turtles and Bioluminecense too 😍
After a 'sporty' upwind sail in 15-20 knots, beating into very choppy waves, we decided to bail on our plan to head from Majorca to Sardinia and stop at Menorca on the way instead. It was fine conditions for a fun 12 hour sail, but we didn't feel like beating into it for another 2 days to Sardinia! Happy with our decision and slept like logs last night! 😴
