Young, naive, and wide-eyed Billy Laverty and Kristina Dalio were attending freshman orientation at Bridgewater State (then) College, now University. Billy, who was wearing a t-shirt with the cartoon character "Underdog" on it, was given the nickname of said character by an orientation leader who took a liking to it. After learning about many of the extracurricular activities that the college had
to offer during the orientation, Billy and Kristina took interest in the school’s radio station, 91.5 WBIM. It was then they decided that the two would someday have their own radio show, featuring "Kwisti and the Underdog." College began, and Billy and Kristina took the necessary steps to get their own show. Their first semester as freshmen was spent as interns on a Tuesday 2-4 rotation show. After they had learned as much as they could as interns, it was time for the duo to finally get their own show. During the spring of 2010, "Double Trouble" hit the airwaves, this time every Thursday from 2-4. Named after Team Rocket's Jessie & James of "Pokémon" fame, "Double Trouble" was actually not named to be affiliated with anything related to the anime; it simply fit the dynamic of the show. It also featured Tom Hanley as a co-host. Along with laughter and much, much more, Tom brought along the "WTH!?" segment. He has since moved onto bigger and better things, hosting "Major Tom's Transmission from Mars" and becoming Promotions Director with the WBIM staff. Other segments that originated during this time include the "Triple Threat," which will likely live on in some form on “The Perfect Storm.”
After a brief hiatus in the fall of 2010, "Double Trouble" once again returned to their 2-4 time slot, but this time they were once again broadcasting on Tuesday afternoons. Often, there are listeners from all around (friends at UMass Amherst, Stonehill, and sometimes even back home in Uxbridge/Mendon, MA) who like to request sometimes silly things, but they get played regardless because we appreciate our fans and listeners who take the time to tune in. As the time to sign up for shows neared, Billy and Kristina decided that it was time to step up their game and take on a specialty show, rather than the same “rotation” format they had always been doing. And so, a case of mono on Kristina’s part lead to lots of idle thinking time, and of those thoughts, “The Perfect Storm” was born.
“The Perfect Storm” is the evolved form of “Double Trouble”. The show is in a way the same, because it will have the same hosts, but a few things will certainly be different. Rather than playing the station’s required “rotation” music, we are free to play whatever we want (as long as it follows FCC guidelines and does not swear!).
