Part 2: How i started my business (part one on Instagram )

I took lots of pictures of my beautiful veggies that i harvested. Being friends with lots of wedding florists, they noticed and commented on my beautiful veggies i grew.

At this time i started thinking about growing flowers and i bought 200 rose bushes i planted inbetween the veggie rows. I picked the beautiful garden roses, took pics of them and shared them on FB.

One day send me a message saying: I got some seeds from Europe which Jeanette from gave me. It's draught here in Tulbagh and I won't be able to look after them. I will put them in Eva's backpack at school - pls plant them and see if something comes from them 🌸 Little did Anli & Jeanette know what huge seed they were planting here! I planted the packets of seeds inbetween the veggies. Without me knowing at the time it was the perfect time to plant the seeds and they grew into enormous & beautiful flowers. Flowers that could not be purchased locally in RSA. I took pictures of them and loaded them on FB....My phone did not stop ringing and the few rows of flowers i had was booked out within 10minutes.

The weeks following this my husband & i decided to put up a small 0.4 hectare net for me on the farm to grow flowers. My husband told me: "This is just playing, trail & error. No pressure".

We had a budget when we started the small flower farm and to be completely honest, at the end of the year we spent 10 times more than our budget 😅 When growing flowers you quickly realise that you need a coldroom & a small coldtruck...a waterfilter and lots more. It all adds up quickly without it being in the budget. I worked my fingers to the bone the first 3 years. I still do now but the first 3 years were very intense and pretty stressfull. I had to do 10 people's work. The first year i was even driving the small truck doing deliveries in Paarl. Every weekend I was also photographing weddings to be able to pay for the flower farm. I worked for 3 years, 7 days a week to get the flower farm started. It was very intense.

One of my favourite giant varieties this season - Dahlia Maki 💕

Dahlia Maki is a "sport" of Dahlia Emory Paul. This means Maki came from Emory Paul and it was a fluke that Maki appeared. Maki is a mutation of Emory paul. Someone saved the tubers of the fluke Maki and propogated it into more and more. Now we have Maki available to enjoy and love. We did not have many plants of Maki this season but we will be sure to sell some of the tubers in our tuber sale in May 🌸

Maki & Emory Paul is by far the biggest varieties of Dahlias we have on the farm with blooms measuring 30cm! 🌸🌸
